When to go
Derived, not experience. Rule for this region: months whose IPMA 1991–2020 normal for Ponta Delgada (station 513, 35 m) has mean daily max ≥ 20 °C and fewer than 10 rain days (≥ 1 mm): May 20.2 °C/8.7 d, Jun 22.4/6.6, Jul 24.7/4.8, Aug 26.0/6.5, Sep 25.0/9.4. October (22.6 °C) fails on 13.7 rain days; December is the wettest month (152.8 mm, 15 days). Ponta Delgada is a coastal station; rainfall rises about 196 mm a year per 100 m of altitude (2025 study), so Furnas, Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo are wetter and cooler..

Where to stay
Typical rent€1,050 / month1-bedroom flat in the centre. Crowd-sourced figure, treat it as an order of magnitude.
The easiest base without a car: shops, restaurants, the bus hub and two coworking operators (a third is 10 minutes away in Lagoa). Cons named by a 2026 guide: tricky street parking and fewer nature sights close by (Travel Lemming, modified 11 Aug 2026). Research.
North-coast town 18 minutes' drive from Ponta Delgada, next to Santa Bárbara surf beach and Caldeira Velha; described as less touristy and cheaper, but you'll need a car (Travel Lemming 2026). CEmpA coworking is here. Research.
Valley village with Terra Nostra and Poça da Dona Beija hot springs; small centre, car needed, far from beaches (Travel Lemming 2026). About 40 minutes' drive or 1 h 30 by bus from Ponta Delgada. Research.
South-coast towns between Ponta Delgada and Furnas; one 2026 guide suggests Vila Franca as a compromise for drivers (Travel Lemming). Line 315 to Ponta Delgada, about 50 minutes: 9 departures on weekdays all year (11 to 12 on school days), 4 on Saturdays and 3 on Sundays (AzoresBus, October 2026). Research.

Towns

Terceira's UNESCO-listed old port town and the natural base on the Azores' second gateway island: a flight from São Miguel, lava caves and the Biscoitos rock pools within 25 minutes' drive, Monte Brasil next to town. A little cooler than Ponta Delgada. Research draft.

Inland valley village in the east of São Miguel, built around hot springs and fumaroles: Terra Nostra park, Poça da Dona Beija, the lakeside caldeiras where cozido is cooked underground. Quiet in the evening, wetter than the coast, 40 minutes by car from Ponta Delgada. Research draft.

The Azores' biggest town and the one São Miguel base that works without a car: the island bus hub, coworking spaces, a flat seafront with saltwater pools, the airport under 3 km away. Humid, mild and changeable all year. Research draft, not first-hand.

North-coast town 18 minutes' drive from Ponta Delgada, next to Santa Bárbara surf beach and the Caldeira Velha hot springs, with a coworking centre. Quieter and less touristy than Ponta Delgada; a car makes it work. Research draft, not first-hand.

Village in the big crater at São Miguel's western end, by the Blue and Green lakes, the Azores' largest lake. A day trip from Ponta Delgada: 30 minutes by car, or AzoresBus lines 205, 206 and 208. Viewpoints on the rim, two waymarked trails down, and frequent cloud. Research draft, not first-hand.

South-coast town halfway between Ponta Delgada and Furnas, known for the crater islet offshore where you can swim in summer, two Blue Flag beaches, whale boats from the marina and the local queijadas. About 25 minutes' drive or 50 minutes by bus from Ponta Delgada. Research draft, not first-hand.
In detail
The Azores are Portugal’s mid-Atlantic islands, nine of them, about 236,000 people in all. For a stay of weeks, nearly everyone starts on São Miguel: its airport at Ponta Delgada has the most flights, the island has a full bus network and the four coworking operators we documented, and the sights people come for (crater lakes, hot springs, whales) are within an hour’s drive. Come for nature, not beaches or sun: it is mild all year, but humid, and the weather changes fast.
| Base | Coast | In one line | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ponta Delgada | South | The city: buses, coworking, restaurants, flat seafront; the base that works without a car | Ponta Delgada |

For most people São Miguel, with Ponta Delgada as the base: its airport has by far the most flights, it has the island bus network and the coworking spaces, and the famous sights (Sete Cidades, Furnas, Lagoa do Fogo) are 20–40 minutes' drive away. Terceira, with Angra do Heroísmo, is the second gateway and an easy flight from Ponta Delgada; we cover it as a side trip for now.
Not in Ponta Delgada, and not for Furnas, Ribeira Grande or Vila Franca, which have direct buses. For Lagoa do Fogo, Ferraria, Nordeste viewpoints and a same-day Sete Cidades round trip on a weekday, a car or a tour is the realistic choice. Since 1 September 2026 one operator, AzoresBus, runs the whole island network, so older bus guides are out of date.
Mild all year and humid. In Ponta Delgada, IPMA's 1991–2020 normals give mean daily highs from 17.4 °C in February to 26.0 °C in August, and 987.5 mm of rain a year on about 122 days. Rain comes in every month, least in July. The crater lakes and Furnas are higher, so wetter and cooler, and often in cloud.
Less easily than before. Ryanair stopped all Azores flights from 29 March 2026. From mainland Portugal, Azores Airlines and TAP fly to Ponta Delgada; Azores Airlines says it will run more than 100 weekly flights between the mainland and the Azores in winter 2026/27. Direct flights from the rest of Europe are fewer and partly seasonal.
One hour behind Lisbon and London all year: UTC−1 in winter and UTC+0 in summer, with the same change dates as mainland Portugal.
