In detail
Furnas is a village in a volcanic valley in the east of São Miguel, in the municipality of Povoação. People come for the hot water: the Terra Nostra garden pool, the smaller Poça da Dona Beija pools that stay open until 23:00, and the fumaroles by the lake where the local stew, cozido, cooks underground for six or seven hours. It is 40 minutes’ drive or about 1 h 30 by bus from Ponta Delgada.
On the October 2026 AzoresBus timetables, line 318 runs along the south coast via Vila Franca and takes about 1 h 30; it runs every day, from Ponta Delgada (Alfândega) on weekdays at 09:00, 13:45, 16:00 and early evening, at weekends at 09:00 and 15:00 all year (extra runs June to September). Line 110 goes the north way via Ribeira Grande, twice a day (07:15 and 15:15). A day trip works: out at 09:00, back on the 16:18 (318, weekdays), the 17:17 (318, weekends) or the 17:10 (110). Check the timetable before you go.
If hot springs are the point, yes: Poça da Dona Beija is open until 23:00 (last entry 21:30), while day-trippers leave on the afternoon buses. The trade-off is a wetter, cloudier valley and about 40 minutes' drive from Ponta Delgada (routing model).
Entry to the caldeiras area by Lagoa das Furnas costs €3 for non-residents; children under 12 go free and parking is free. Pots go into the ground from 06:00, and restaurants collect theirs between 11:00 and 13:00, according to the municipality.
