Short answer: in Albufeira, spend a morning in the old town and on its two town beaches, Pescadores and Peneco; take a boat trip along the cliffs from the marina; give one day to the longer beaches either side, Falésia to the east and São Rafael to the west; and use a car for Paderne castle, Zoomarine and Loulé. The council’s free guided coastal walks are worth timing a trip around in autumn. We haven’t stayed in Albufeira; hours and prices below come from the council, the marina and the parks, read in October 2026.

Deciding whether to stay here at all? That’s a different question, answered in is Albufeira worth it?.

The old town and the town beaches

1. Walk the old town to the clock tower. Albufeira’s visitors split between two areas: the old town above the fishing-boat beach and the Strip, Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro, further east [21]. Start in the old town at the Torre do Relógio on Rua Bernardino de Sousa, which the council calls the emblem of the town; its iron crown holding the bell dates from the 19th century [1].

2. Praia dos Pescadores and Praia do Peneco. Pescadores and Peneco are the two beaches below the old town. You reach Peneco through a tunnel, by stairs or by a public lift, and it has Blue Flag and accessible-beach status with lifeguards [2]. In 2026 the lifeguard season in Albufeira runs from 15 May to 15 October, longer than the national season [4].

3. The archaeology museum. The Museu Municipal de Arqueologia on Praça da República is in the old town hall, two floors above the sea, with finds from prehistory to the 17th century, including the Roman villa at Retorta [7]. Hours: Wednesday to Friday 09:30–17:30; Tuesday, weekends and holidays 09:30–12:30 and 13:30–17:30; closed on Mondays. A ticket costs €3.13, and children up to 14 get in free [7].

Beaches beyond the centre

Albufeira municipality had 25 Blue Flag sites in 2026, the marina among them [3]. Three that are worth the short trip:

  • Praia da Falésia, east of Olhos de Água: a long beach under red cliffs, reached by stairs or a ramp, with lifeguards at its two official sectors, Açoteias and Alfamar, until 15 October [25][26].
  • Olhos de Água, east of town, with a ramp and stairs to the beach and freshwater springs you can see on the sand at low tide [5].
  • Praia de São Rafael, west of the centre, and Praia da Oura, east of the old town at the bottom of the Strip.

The whole region’s beaches, with lifeguard and Blue Flag status by beach, are in our Algarve beaches overview.

On the water

4. A boat trip from the marina. The marina, west of the old town, lists maritime-tourism companies among its businesses, alongside restaurants, bars, bike rental, bowling and karting [6], so the boat-trip companies are based here. Ask each operator which stretch of coast the trip covers. If the Benagil cave is the point, read our Benagil cave guide first: since August 2024 nobody may swim into the cave or land on its beach, boats go in for two minutes only, and since July 2025 kayak and SUP trips need a guide [23][24].

5. Walk the cliffs at the Seven Hanging Valleys. West of Albufeira, a 5.7 km clifftop path runs from Praia de Vale Centeanes near Carvoeiro to Praia da Marinha, passing above Benagil [27]. Distances, parking and an easier boardwalk for small children: Seven Hanging Valleys and the Carvoeiro boardwalk.

Inland: Paderne castle

6. Castelo de Paderne. About 16 km north of the centre, roughly half an hour by car in a routing model without traffic [10], the ruined castle of Paderne stands above the Ribeira de Quarteira. The council describes it as one of the castles on the Portuguese flag, taken from the Moors in 1248 and decommissioned in 1858; what remains are sections of wall, the gate tower and the walls of its chapel, and the council publishes audio guides on its page [8]. Below it, a Roman-style bridge with three arches crosses the stream; it was rebuilt in 1771 [9]. We found no opening hours or access rules on the council’s page, so confirm access locally before you go, and wear proper shoes for the ruins.

With kids

7. Zoomarine. The region’s marine park is at Guia, 10 km from Albufeira by the park’s own figure, with free parking and a “Zoomarine” bus stop about 300 m from the gate [13]. In autumn it opens on fewer days: Tuesday to Saturday in October 2026, and in November only Thursday to Saturday until 28 November [14].

8. Krazy World. An interactive zoo with pools and mini golf near Algoz [15], about 15 km by road (model, no traffic) [16]. Its opening days were not readable on its site when we checked, so phone first.

9. Aquashow indoor park. In Quarteira, Aquashow has an indoor water park open daily from 1 October 2026, sold as 2- or 3-hour tickets [17]. Useful on a grey day.

Ticket prices for all three, read from the parks’ own sites, are in the Algarve with kids, along with car seats, doctors and which beaches suit small children.

In autumn and winter

10. A free guided walk with the council. In autumn 2026 the council runs a series of guided nature and geology walks called Trilhos do Tempo: birds at the Lagoa dos Salgados lagoon, the geology of Falésia, fossils on the Escarpão plateau [11]. The last one of the season is on 14 November 2026, along the coast between Praia do Evaristo and Praia de Manuel Lourenço: meet at 09:00 at Praia do Evaristo, start 09:15; registration is free but required, with 25 places and a deadline of 11 November [12]. The page is in Portuguese, so ask about the language when you register.

11. Birdwatching at Lagoa dos Salgados. The Lagoa dos Salgados, a coastal lagoon west of Albufeira, is about 11.5 km from the centre by road [22], and the council chose it for its beginners’ birdwatching walk [11].

Off-season, keep in mind that the lifeguards leave the beaches after 15 October [4] and that Zoomarine closes after 28 November [14]. The old town, the museum and the day trips below work all year. Winter weather and sea temperatures for the whole coast: the best time to visit the Algarve.

Day trips from Albufeira

12. Loulé. About 32 km and 25 minutes by car without traffic [16]. Its domed market hall opened in 1908 [28]; the castle museum, craft workshops and the Saturday market are in things to do in Loulé.

13. Vilamoura. About 22 km by road, without traffic [18]. Next to the marina, Cerro da Vila is a Roman site occupied from the 1st century BC to the 11th century AD, with a small museum [19]; the marina is for an evening stroll. More in things to do in Vilamoura.

14. Silves and Monchique. The castle town of Silves is a half day; the hills of Monchique and Fóia are a full one.

More ideas for the whole region, west to east: things to do in the Algarve.

Working between beach days

The council runs a free municipal coworking room, Albufeira Digital Nomads [20]. Hours and the alternatives for a longer work stay are in is Albufeira worth it?.

Getting there and around

From Faro airport, take the Aerobus to Albufeira bus station, or bus 16 into Faro and then the train to Albufeira-Ferreiras; both stations are outside the centre; details in Faro airport to Albufeira and Vilamoura. In town there is a local bus network, Giro; its evening hours and routes are summarised in the Algarve without a car. For Paderne, Falésia and the parks, a car is simpler: Algarve car hire.

Where to stay: where you sleep decides how much of the nightlife you hear. The council’s 2026 noise order names Avenida Sá Carneiro (the Strip), Rua da Oura, the Baixa and the old town as the areas with the most complaints [29]; more in is Albufeira worth it?, and the towns around Albufeira are compared in where to stay in central Algarve.

Quick answers

What is there to do in Albufeira apart from the beach?

Walk the old town to the Torre do Relógio, the clock tower the council calls the town's emblem; see the archaeology museum on Praça da República (€3.13, free for children up to 14, closed on Mondays); take a boat trip from the marina; drive 16 km inland to the ruined Moorish castle of Paderne; and spend a day at Zoomarine, 10 km away at Guia. Loulé's market hall and Roman Vilamoura are both within about half an hour by car.

What can you do in Albufeira in winter?

The town beaches lose their lifeguards after 15 October, so plan around walks, the old town, the museum and day trips. In autumn the council runs free guided nature and geology walks on the coast (the next one is on 14 November 2026, registration required), Aquashow in Quarteira has an indoor water park open daily from 1 October 2026, and Zoomarine opens Thursday to Saturday in November until the 28th.

What can you do in Albufeira with kids?

The town beach Peneco has a public lift and lifeguards from 15 May to 15 October; the archaeology museum is free for children up to 14; Zoomarine at Guia is 10 km away and Krazy World near Algoz about 15 km; and Aquashow in Quarteira has an indoor water park from 1 October 2026. Whether Albufeira suits your family as a base is covered in our 'Is Albufeira worth it?' guide.

Are there boat trips from Albufeira?

Yes. The marina, west of the old town, lists maritime-tourism companies among its businesses, so coastal boat trips start there; ask each operator which stretch of coast it covers. If you want the Benagil cave: since August 2024 nobody may swim into it or land on its beach, licensed boats go in for two minutes, and since July 2025 kayak and SUP trips need a guide.
