Silves day tripthe castle, the cathedral and how to get there by train, car or boat
A half day in the Algarve's old Moorish capital: castle and museum tickets (€3.90 combined), cathedral hours, trains from Lagos and Faro with 2026 fares, the tide-dependent boat from Portimão, the August medieval fair, and what works with kids.

Short answer: Silves makes a good half day inland. Plan two to three hours for the red sandstone castle, the cathedral below it and the small archaeology museum. The castle and museum together cost €3.90, and children pay half [1][3]. Come by car (28 minutes from Albufeira, 34 from Lagos) [12] or by train, bearing in mind the station is 2.1 km out of town [7]. There’s no beach. Pair it with an afternoon on the coast at Armação de Pêra, 21 minutes away by car [12].
What to see, in order
- Castelo de Silves. The castle is the reason to come. It’s open every day except 25 December and 1 January, from 09:00–18:00 between October and April and 09:00–20:00 in summer. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing [2]. Adults pay €2.80, and children, students and over-65s pay €1.40 [1].
- Sé de Silves (the cathedral). It’s just below the castle. Visits are Monday to Saturday, 09:30–13:00 and 14:30–17:00. The diocese says visits are paid but doesn’t print a price [4]. Check before you go.
- Museu Municipal de Arqueologia. The museum is built around a 12th–13th-century Almohad well-cistern [3]. It’s open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00, and closed on Mondays [2]. The castle + museum ticket is €3.90 [1].
Which day: the cathedral is closed to visits on Sundays and the museum on Mondays [2][4], so Tuesday to Saturday is the only time you can see all three.

Getting there
| From | How | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lagos | Regional train | about 28–38 min [9] | €3.30 (InterRegional €3.65) [8] |
| Faro | Regional train | about 54–67 min, 1 h 16 on the last train from Faro (InterRegional 49–52 min) [9] | €5.85 (InterRegional €6.45) [8] |
| Albufeira | Train from Albufeira-Ferreiras | about 21–33 min [9] | €2.80 [8] |
| Albufeira | Car | 31.2 km, about 28 min [12] | — |
| Lagos | Car | 39.8 km, about 34 min [12] | — |
- The train station is in Silves-Gare, 2.1 km from the centre, with a climb on the way [7]. Short legs with children, or a hot day, call for a taxi; we didn’t verify a bus that meets the trains.
- Trains run 10 times a day in each direction on weekdays, 9 on Saturdays and 8 on Sundays, with gaps of two hours or more around midday (from Silves towards Faro, nothing between 11:04 and 13:54) [9]. Check the times on CP’s timetable for your day; some services run only on weekdays or only at weekends.
- By boat: Algarve SunBoat runs a trip up the Arade river from Portimão. It takes about 4.5 hours, with roughly 1.5 hours in Silves. Because it goes with the tide, it runs only on a few days each month. The operator says it isn’t suitable for infants and small children [10][13]. Check its booking calendar for your date and the current price (operator page checked 11 October 2026).
The medieval fair (August)
The Feira Medieval usually takes over the old town in the first half of August [5]. In 2026 the 21st edition ran 7–15 August, from 18:00 to 01:00, with a daily parade at 18:00 and tournaments at 20:00 and 22:30 [6]. A day ticket was €2. Children up to 130 cm or 9 years got in free with online booking [5]. If you want the castle without crowds, avoid those evenings. If you want the fair, book the tournament seats ahead.
With kids
- The castle is the easy win: it’s cheap, it has walls to walk, and children pay half [1]. Keep small children close on the ramparts.
- Krazy World in Algoz, also in Silves municipality, is a family zoo park with a spray park and pools included in the ticket. A child (4–10) is €10.75 and a family of 2+1 is €41.95 [11]. Check opening days outside summer.
- For a beach afternoon, Armação de Pêra is the nearest town on the coast, 20 km and about 21 minutes away [12].
- Skip the boat with toddlers: the operator says so itself [10].
Should you stay in Silves?
Probably not for a beach holiday. Silves is a town inland, on the railway but with the station outside town [7]. It suits people who want quiet and a car-based week, with the coast 20 minutes away. We haven’t researched accommodation there in detail. For central Algarve bases compared, see where to stay in central Algarve.

Quick answers
Is Silves worth a day trip?
For a half day, yes, if you like castles and old towns: the red sandstone castle, the cathedral below it and a small archaeology museum are all within a few minutes' walk, and the castle and museum together cost €3.90 (CM Silves, October 2026). It is inland, so there is no beach; most visitors combine it with an afternoon on the coast.
How much does Silves Castle cost?
€2.80 for adults and €1.40 for children, students, Cartão Jovem holders and over-65s; €3.90 for a combined ticket with the Museu Municipal de Arqueologia. Open daily except 25 December and 1 January, 09:00–18:00 from October to April and 09:00–20:00 in summer, last entry 30 minutes before closing (CM Silves, accessed 4 October 2026).
Can you get to Silves by train?
Yes, but the station is 2.1 km from the centre. From Lagos the train takes about 30–35 minutes (€3.30); from Faro about an hour (€5.85), 54 minutes to 1 h 16 by regional train. There are 10 trains a day each way on weekdays, 9 on Saturdays and 8 on Sundays, with gaps of two hours or more around midday; towards Faro nothing leaves Silves between 11:04 and 13:54 (CP fares and timetable from 19 July 2026, counted by day on 11 October 2026).
When is the Silves medieval fair?
Usually in the first half of August. In 2026 the 21st edition ran 7–15 August, 18:00–01:00, with a €2 day ticket; children up to 130 cm or 9 years entered free with online booking (official fair site and CM Silves).
Is Silves good with kids?
For a short visit: the castle is cheap, children pay half price, and Krazy World, a family zoo park, is about 15 km from Albufeira on the way. The Arade boat from Portimão is not suitable for infants and small children, according to the operator.
