In detail

The notes behind this page

Aveiro is a small, flat city on the Ria de Aveiro lagoon, about 70 km south of Porto. Visitors come for the canals and painted moliceiro boats in the centre, and for Costa Nova, a beach village of white houses with coloured stripes on the sandbar between the lagoon and the Atlantic. From Porto it is one urban train without changes, then a local bus to the beach.

What the sources say (research)

  • Costa Nova has held a Blue Flag since 1989 and is classed as an accessible beach; facilities include lifeguards in season, showers, toilets and sunshade rental. Water about 14 °C in winter and 18 °C in summer. [Turismo de Ílhavo]
  • In 2026 the Ílhavo beaches Barra, Barra Sul, Costa Nova and Costa Nova Sul all have the Blue Flag, and lifeguards were on duty from 13 June to 13 September. [ABAE 2026; Portaria 204-A/2026] A Blue Flag is about water quality and services, not about how rough the sea is on the day.
  • Aveiro’s climate is close to Porto’s: highs of 24.5 °C in August and 14.6 °C in January, 975 mm of rain a year over about 97 days. [IPMA, Aveiro / Universidade]

Aveiro and Costa Nova: quick answers

How do you get from Porto to Aveiro by train?

On CP's urban Aveiro line, roughly hourly from Porto São Bento (for example 08:55, arriving 10:07) in the timetable valid since 26 July 2026. Porto–Aveiro is 9 zones: €3.95 one way, €2.00 for children 4–12, under 4 free (CP 2026 prices). A €7.70 CP tourist ticket gives a day of unlimited urban trains, including this line.

How do you get from Aveiro to Costa Nova?

BusWay line 36 from the Terminal Rodoviário de Aveiro to Largo Arrais Ançã in Costa Nova takes about 45 minutes, at irregular intervals of 30 minutes to almost 3 hours, so check the return times. A ticket bought from the driver in cash is €2.00, €1.00 for ages 5 to 10; a 24-hour card is €4.00. In July and August line 35 is a faster summer service via the motorway.

Is Aveiro worth a day trip from Porto with kids?

On paper it is one of the easier ones: a flat town, one train without changes, a bus to the beach, and a science centre and maritime museum for a rainy day. A day for Aveiro plus Costa Nova is long with small children; pick one or stay a night.
