Day trips from Porto by trainthe Douro, Braga, Guimarães and Aveiro
Day trips from Porto without a car: the Douro by CP train to Pinhão (about 2 h 20), Braga (under an hour by train, then a bus to Bom Jesus), Guimarães, Aveiro and Costa Nova, and Gaia's beaches 20 minutes away. 2026 fares, the €7.70 day ticket, and what works with kids.

Short answer: from Porto you can reach five good day trips by train, no car needed. For scenery, the Douro valley (about 2 h 20 to Pinhão, €12.45 one way). For an easy day, Braga (under an hour by train, then a bus up to Bom Jesus) or Guimarães (about 1 h 15). For a beach day with children, Aveiro and Costa Nova (1 h 10 by train plus 45 minutes by bus) or Gaia’s beaches, 20 minutes south. A €7.70 CP day ticket covers the urban lines to Braga, Guimarães and Aveiro; the Douro trains are priced separately. Times and fares change: check before you go.

Times are time on board: add the wait for your connection, which on the Aveiro and Costa Nova trip can stretch the journey to well over two hours. The fares are for adults; CP lists child and 50% fares separately.
The CP day ticket
CP’s tourist ticket gives unlimited travel on the Porto urban trains for €7.70 for one day or €16.50 for three, on the Aveiro, Braga, Guimarães, Marco and Leixões lines. Porto Card holders get 10% off at ticket offices. [cp.pt, 10 Oct 2026] It does not list the regional Douro trains to Régua and Pinhão, so buy those separately. For an adult going to Aveiro and back, the day ticket (€7.70) already costs less than two singles (2 × €3.95); for Braga or Guimarães, compare with the single fare at the machine. Children 4 to 12 pay reduced singles, so for them singles may be cheaper. [CP price table 2026]
The Douro valley
The best-known trip: the CP line follows the river after Régua, and from Pinhão a rabelo boat runs past the quintas. [CP; magnificodouro.pt] From 3 November 2026 to 24 March 2027 the Marco de Canaveses–Régua section is closed for works, so the journey is a train to Caíde or Marco de Canaveses, a CP replacement bus to Régua and a train on from there. [CP notice, 26 Oct 2026] The catch is the timing: trains are hours apart, and the early boat does not fit the first train from Porto. The historic train between Régua and Tua ran on weekends to 18 October 2026; CP has not yet published a 2027 season. [CP]
Times, fares, boats and quintas: the Douro valley from Porto.
Braga and Bom Jesus
Under an hour on the fastest trains from São Bento. From the centre, TUB bus 2 runs to Bom Jesus do Monte every 30 minutes; ride the 1882 water-powered funicular up and walk down the Baroque stairway, 116 m and more than 500 steps; with a pram, buy the funicular return instead. [CP; TUB; bomjesus.pt] Braga also works as a short base of its own: see Braga.
Guimarães
About 1 h 05 to 1 h 25 by train: on weekdays mostly hourly with two-hour gaps around midday, at weekends and on public holidays only 10 trains a day, roughly every two hours. The castle and ducal palace are free for children up to 12 with an adult; the cable car climbs to Penha. [CP; Turismo de Guimarães]
Both Braga and Guimarães in one day? Possible on a weekday with the 101 bus between them (about 50 minutes; no service at weekends or on public holidays, CIM Cávado 2026 timetable), a car or a tour, but it is a long day with children. One city per day is calmer. Details: Braga and Guimarães from Porto.
Aveiro and Costa Nova
One urban train to Aveiro (about 1 h 10), then BusWay 36 to the striped houses and Blue Flag beach of Costa Nova in about 45 minutes; connections are not timed, so allow for waiting. [CP; BusWay] With small children, pick either the beach or Aveiro’s canals for the day, and swim only while lifeguards are on duty, between the flags. Sample day, buses and when to stay a night: Aveiro and Costa Nova from Porto.
A beach day without going far
The urban train south from Campanhã reaches Praia de Miramar and Praia da Granja in Gaia in about 18 to 20 minutes, both a short walk from the station. [CP] For the city beaches in Foz and Matosinhos, lifeguard dates and how cold the Atlantic is, see Porto’s best beaches.
Day trips with kids
- Easiest: Braga (funicular, then the gardens at the top) or a Gaia beach in the bathing season. Short train, one clear goal.
- Good, but plan the day: Guimarães (castle free up to 12 with an adult) and Costa Nova (train plus bus).
- Hardest as a day trip: the Douro. Over four hours on trains for a boat ride; a night on a quinta turns it into a good family trip.
More for families: Porto with kids, with its own list of day trips that work with children.
Train, tour or car?
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| CP train | Braga, Guimarães, Aveiro, Gaia, the Douro by rail | Cheapest; you follow the timetable |
| Tour from Porto | The Douro with a quinta and lunch, or Braga and Guimarães in one day | Easiest; less time in each place |
| Hire car | Douro viewpoints and quintas away from the line | Flexible; parking in old towns, wine and driving do not mix |
With a hire car: electronic tolls, alcohol limits and child seats in driving in Portugal.
Stay a night instead
Two trips are better with a night away: the Douro, where trains are hours apart and the quintas are best in the evening, and Costa Nova or Aveiro in summer, if the bus connection makes the day too long. Options: the Douro valley and Aveiro.
Into Spain
The Celta train runs daily between Porto Campanhã and Vigo, with compulsory seat reservations; tickets from CP stations or Renfe. [cp.pt] We have not checked the 2026 times and fares, so this stays a pointer, not a plan.
Planning tips
- Several trains start at Campanhã, not São Bento. Check which station on the timetable for your day. [CP]
- Children: on CP trains, children up to age 3 travel free if they do not take a seat, and ages 4 to 12 get up to 50% off; carry proof of age. [CP] CP’s youth and Family & Friends discounts, and the long-distance trains: trains in Portugal.
- Getting to the station and around town: getting around Porto and the north.
- What to do on the days you stay in the city: things to do in Porto.

Quick answers
What is the best day trip from Porto?
For the landscape, the Douro valley: the CP train runs along the river to Pinhão in about 2 h 20, though from 3 November 2026 to 24 March 2027 the Marco de Canaveses–Régua section is closed and part of the trip is by replacement bus. For the easiest day, Braga: under an hour on the fastest trains, then about 20 minutes by bus to the Bom Jesus funicular. With small children, the beach at Costa Nova near Aveiro, or a beach in Gaia 20 minutes south; in both, swim only in the lifeguarded season, between the flags.
Can you do day trips from Porto without a car?
Yes. CP trains from São Bento or Campanhã reach Braga, Guimarães, Aveiro, Gaia's beaches and the Douro valley. Only the quintas and viewpoints away from the railway really need a car or a tour.
Is there a train day pass in Porto?
CP sells a tourist ticket for the Porto urban trains: €7.70 for one day or €16.50 for three, valid on the lines to Aveiro, Braga, Guimarães, Marco and Leixões. The Douro trains to Régua and Pinhão are regional services with their own fares (€12.45 one way São Bento–Pinhão in 2026). Check before you go.
Which day trips from Porto are good with kids?
Short train rides with one clear goal: the Bom Jesus funicular in Braga, the castle and cable car in Guimarães (castle free up to age 12 with an adult), or Costa Nova's beach. The Douro is long for small children as a day trip; a night there works better.
Can you do a day trip from Porto to Spain?
The Celta train runs daily between Porto Campanhã and Vigo, with compulsory seat reservations; tickets from CP stations or Renfe. We have not checked journey times and fares for 2026; see CP's Celta page.
