In detail
Porto and the north is Portugal’s second city plus everything you can reach from it by train in an afternoon: Atlantic beaches at Foz (by bus) and Matosinhos (on the metro), the old cities of Braga and Guimarães about an hour away, and the Douro valley’s terraced vineyards up the river. It is cooler and wetter than Lisbon, and cheaper to live in.

On paper, yes. Porto has the country's biggest urban park running to the sea, Blue Flag beaches inside the city limits (Foz, Homem do Leme, Gondarém, Aquário in 2026), and rents well below Lisbon (Numbeo, Oct 2026: 1-bedroom outside centre €852 vs €1,063). nomads.com lists Porto at 93 Mbps crowd-sourced.
Yes. CP urban trains from Porto São Bento reach Braga in about an hour and Guimarães in 1 h 02 to 1 h 25, and a €7.70 one-day tourist ticket covers both lines. The Douro line runs to Régua, Pinhão and Pocinho; Porto to Pinhão takes about 2 h 20, but from 3 November 2026 to 24 March 2027 the Marco de Canaveses–Régua section is closed for works and CP replaces it with buses. Check the CP timetables before you go.
May to September by the IPMA climate normal: highs of 20–25 °C and 3–9 rain days a month. Porto is wetter than Lisbon: 1,147 mm a year over 105 rain days, with November the wettest month. The Douro is best in spring and the September harvest; inland summers are hot.
