Checked on 11 October 2026. Weather figures are long-term averages, not a forecast. Bus and boat times are from the operators’ 2026 timetables, the Olhão ferries from a local site; event dates are the 2026 editions as announced; check them before you travel.

The short answer

Autumn is a good time for the Algarve if you want warm water without the summer crowds. September is still summer: highs of about 26 °C at Faro and almost no rain [1]. October brings the first autumn rain, about 6 rain days, but highs around 23 °C and a sea that is still 21.0 °C off Faro, 20.3 °C off Sagres and 21.0 °C off Tavira [1][26][27][28]. November is mild, about 20 °C by day, and wetter [1]. The official bathing season ends on 30 September on most beaches, except in Albufeira, where the 2026 season runs to 15 October [5]. The clocks go back on 25 October 2026 [6], and from 1 November the winter bus timetable cuts the airport Aerobus to two runs a day [8]. Events include the Santa Iria fair in Faro (15–25 October), São Martinho in Portimão (6–15 November) and MotoGP at Portimão (20–22 November) [21][24][23]. Slide & Splash closes for the season on 31 October; Zoomarine opens on fewer days until 28 November, and the indoor Aquashow park opens every day [13][14][15].

We average daily values within each month and year, then give each of the 20 annual monthly means equal weight. These 0.25° grid cells are coastal proxies, not measurements at individual beaches or a forecast. The full monthly series is in Algarve weather by month.

What to pack. Summer clothes for September; for October, add a light jacket for the evenings and something for a rainy day; for November, a warm layer and a rain jacket.

September: summer with fewer people

September averages 26.4 °C by day and 1.9 rain days at Faro, and the offshore Faro sea average is 21.6 °C [1][26]. It is the last month with lifeguards on most beaches: in 2026 the official bathing season ended on 30 September on almost all listed beaches outside Albufeira [5]. Which beach suits what: Algarve beaches.

October: warm water, first rain, clocks back

  • Lifeguards. Only Albufeira’s beaches, from Galé and Salgados to Olhos de Água and Falésia, have an official bathing season to 15 October 2026; on the other listed Algarve beaches it ended on 30 September (one Castro Marim beach on 31 August) [5]. Outside the official season, do not count on lifeguards; the dates say nothing about whether the sea is safe on a given day.
  • Rain returns. Rain rises from 21.5 mm in September to 56.0 mm over 6.0 days in October, while highs stay around 23 °C [1].
  • Island boats from Faro. In October 2026 the boat from Faro to Culatra runs only at 08:30 and 14:45, and only if there are passengers; the published Faro to Farol timetable covers 1 to 31 October, with the last boat back from the Farol at 17:30 [10]. The ferries from Olhão to Culatra and the Farol run all year [11]. Which island to pick and how the boats work: Ria Formosa islands.
  • The Santa Iria fair in Faro, 15 to 25 October 2026, at Largo de São Francisco. The organiser, Faro’s municipal company Ambifaro, bills it as the largest and oldest fair in the Algarve [21]; it goes back to 1596 and is named after Santa Iria, whose day is 20 October, with stalls, food, crafts and rides for children and adults [12].
  • Lagos municipal day, 27 October. Lagos celebrates its municipal day in honour of its patron saint, São Gonçalo de Lagos [25].
  • Historic racing at Portimão. The Algarve Classic Festival runs at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve from 30 October to 1 November 2026 [22].
  • Clocks go back on Sunday 25 October 2026. At 01:00 UTC, 02:00 local time, mainland Portugal returns to winter time [6]. From that day it gets dark an hour earlier by the clock, so plan clifftop walks and beach sunsets earlier.
  • 5 October is Republic Day, a national holiday [7]. In 2026 it fell on a Monday; in 2027 it is a Tuesday.

November: quiet, mild, winter timetables

November averages 19.6 °C by day, 11.9 °C at night and 75.5 mm of rain on 6.6 days at Faro; the offshore Faro sea average is 19.2 °C [1][26]. The official bathing season is over on every listed Algarve beach [5], so do not count on lifeguards.

  • 1 November, All Saints’ Day, is a national holiday [7]. In 2026 it falls on a Sunday.
  • São Martinho fair in Portimão, 6 to 15 November 2026, at the Parque de Feiras e Exposições. The council dates it back to 1662; expect roast chestnuts and food stalls, and the Vai e Vem town buses stop nearby [24].
  • MotoGP, 20 to 22 November 2026. The MotoGP Grand Prix of Portugal is at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve near Portimão [23]. If your trip overlaps, we would book a bed nearby early.
  • Winter buses from 1 November. The Vamus Aerobus (line 56) from Faro airport to Albufeira, Lagoa, Portimão and Lagos drops from seven runs a day to two, at 11:15 and 18:15, every day; the 20:15 Transrápido (line 57) runs Monday to Friday only, not on holidays; and line 55 to Quarteira and Vilamoura has no buses at weekends or on holidays [8][9]. These times come from the operator’s timetable data published on 25 September 2026; check the Vamus app once the winter timetable starts. Full detail from the airport: Faro airport to Albufeira and Vilamoura, to Portimão and Carvoeiro and to Lagos and Sagres.
  • Island boats. We found no Faro to Culatra timetable for November; use the Olhão ferries, which run all year [10][11].
  • Walking season. Rota Vicentina gives September to June as the best time for the Fishermen’s Trail on the west coast, and Lagoa council recommends spring and autumn for the Seven Hanging Valleys trail to Praia da Marinha [19][20]. Avoid the clifftops on windy and rainy days.

Without a car in the low season: the Algarve without a car.

Golf in autumn

The Algarve is known for golf, and the Faro figures above explain why autumn suits it: September and October are warm but past the summer heat, and even November has only about six or seven rain days [1]. We have not researched individual courses, green fees or tee times, so check those with the courses directly.

Holidays on 5 October and 1 November

Both are national holidays under the Labour Code, restored in 2016 [7]. Buses run reduced services on holidays: in the Vamus data, for example, the winter 20:15 Transrápido from the airport and line 55 from the airport do not run on holidays [8]. We found no official list of which shops close, so plan supermarket runs the day before. Lagos also has its own municipal day on 27 October [25].

The Algarve with kids in autumn

  • Beaches: in 2026, only Albufeira’s beaches had an official bathing season after 30 September, until 15 October [5]; outside it, do not count on lifeguards. Which beaches the councils describe as sheltered: the Algarve with kids.
  • Zoomarine, the marine park at Guia near Albufeira, opens Tuesday to Saturday in October 2026, closed on Sundays and Mondays. In November it is closed from 1 to 4 November, then opens Thursday to Saturday until 28 November [13]. Check the calendar before you drive.
  • Slide & Splash, the water park at Estômbar near Lagoa, opens 10:00 to 17:00 in October, closed on Sundays, and its last day of 2026 is 31 October [14]. Aqualand at Alcantarilha has already closed for 2026 [16].
  • Aquashow in Quarteira has an indoor water park, open every day from 10:00 to 18:00 since 1 October 2026, with 2- and 3-hour tickets [15]. A rainy-day option once the outdoor parks shut.
  • Zoo de Lagos opens 10:00 to 17:00 from October to March [17], and the Centro Ciência Viva science centre in Faro opens Tuesday to Sunday from March to December [18].
  • Earlier evenings: after 25 October it gets dark an hour earlier by the clock [6].

Quick answers

Is the Algarve warm in October?

Usually, yes. At Faro, October averages a high of 23.3 °C and a low of 15.8 °C, with 56.0 mm of rain on 6.0 days (IPMA 1991–2020). The sea off Faro averages 21.0 °C, compared with 21.5 °C in August (NOAA OISST, 2001–2020). The official bathing season, when beaches have lifeguards, ended on 30 September on most Algarve beaches; in Albufeira the 2026 season runs to 15 October.

What is the weather like in the Algarve in November?

Mild and wetter: at Faro a mean high of 19.6 °C, a low of 11.9 °C and 75.5 mm of rain on 6.6 days (IPMA 1991–2020). The sea off Faro averages 19.2 °C (NOAA OISST, 2001–2020). The official bathing season is over on every listed Algarve beach, so do not count on lifeguards.

Can you swim in the Algarve in October?

The water is warm enough for many people: 20.3 °C off Sagres, 21.0 °C off Faro and 21.0 °C off Tavira in October (NOAA OISST, 2001–2020). The catch is safety, not temperature: in 2026 the official bathing season ended on 30 September on almost all listed Algarve beaches, except Albufeira, where it runs until 15 October (Portaria 204-A/2026/1). Outside it, do not count on lifeguards.

Do buses from Faro airport run in winter?

Yes, but fewer. From 1 November to 30 April the Vamus Aerobus (line 56) to Albufeira, Lagoa, Portimão and Lagos leaves the airport only at 11:15 and 18:15, every day; in summer it runs seven times a day. The 20:15 Transrápido (line 57) runs Monday to Friday only, not on public holidays, and line 55 to Quarteira and Vilamoura has no buses at weekends or on holidays (Vamus timetable data, version 25 September 2026). Próximo bus 16 into Faro runs all year.

What is on in the Algarve in October and November 2026?

The Feira de Santa Iria in Faro, at Largo de São Francisco, runs from 15 to 25 October 2026 (Ambifaro). Lagos marks its municipal day on 27 October. The Algarve Classic Festival of historic racing is at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve from 30 October to 1 November, Portimão's São Martinho fair from 6 to 15 November, and the MotoGP Grand Prix of Portugal at the same circuit from 20 to 22 November 2026.

When do the clocks change in Portugal in 2026?

On Sunday 25 October 2026 at 01:00 UTC: mainland Portugal goes back one hour, from 02:00 to 01:00 local time (Observatório Astronómico de Lisboa). Evenings get dark an hour earlier by the clock from that day.
