Where to stay in the Algarvepicking a base by the kind of trip

A decision table of nine Algarve bases (Lagos, Sagres, Tavira, Albufeira, Carvoeiro, Portimão/Alvor, Faro, Olhão and Aljezur) by train access, distance from Faro airport, beach type and winter character, then picks for families, a month of remote work, no car, couples and winter.

Distances, stations and seasons checked on 4 October 2026. This page compares nine bases using public sources, each dated in the list at the end. Nobody from our family has stayed in most of them. The “best for” column is our pick on paper from the documented facts, not a verdict from a stay. Driving distances and times are OpenStreetMap routing-model estimates without traffic, except Faro city, whose 4 km comes from Wikipedia.

The short answer: for most trips, base yourself on the south coast between Lagos and Tavira, and pick the town by how you’ll get around. Lagos is the strongest all-rounder on paper: a station in town, cliff coves plus a long flat beach, and coworking [11][33][31]. Tavira is the quieter railway base with island beaches [11][29]. Albufeira has the longest lifeguarded season [25]. Sagres and Aljezur are for surfers and people with a car [13][23].

The decision table

Base Best for (our pick on paper) Train station From Faro airport by road (model) Beach type Winter / off-season (sourced only)
Lagos Nomads, workation, families Yes, in town, plus Meia Praia halt [11] 90 km, ~1 h 25 [1] Cliff coves; Meia Praia is long and flat with no steps [33] Town buses mostly end around 20:00 outside summer [17]
Sagres Surfers, quiet workation with a car No (no railway in Vila do Bispo) [13] 122 km, ~1 h 50 [2] Four beaches; Martinhal calm and shallow but windy [35] Jan mean max 16.1 °C, Nov 8.4 rainy days (IPMA normals) [27]; one hostel sells winter deals [32]
Tavira Workation, families Yes, in town [11] 43 km, ~53 min [3] Island beaches by ferry, not in town [29] Dec wettest (7.6 rainy days); Jan nights 6–7 °C [28]; ferry hourly 09:30–18:30 from 7 Sep [29]
Albufeira Families wanting the longest lifeguard season Yes, but 6.7 km out of town [14][40] 49 km, ~57 min [4] Long sand under red cliffs at Falésia [19] Lifeguards until 15 Oct in 2026, the region’s longest season [25]; town buses end ~20:00 outside summer [17]
Carvoeiro Couples No; Estômbar-Lagoa is 8 km by road [16] 69 km, ~1 h 12 [5] Small town beach in a calm bay [20] Not documented
Portimão / Alvor Families (Praia da Rocha) Portimão yes, >1 km from centre [15]; Alvor no 75 / 79 km, ~1 h 12 / 1 h 17 [6][7] Praia da Rocha: urban, over 1 km of sand [21] Portimão–Alvor buses run until ~20:00 all year, late bus only July–August [17]
Faro Nomads, short stays, car-free Yes, central [11] 4 km (Wikipedia, not routed) [10] Praia de Faro on the island by bus or ferry; Ilha Deserta by boat [18] Jan 16.3 °C / 8.3 °C; Nov–Jan bring 214.8 mm of 455.1 mm a year [26]; beach ferry only 5 a day from November to December [44]
Olhão Car-free island days Yes [11] 18 km, ~35 min [8] No town beach; islands by ferry [39] Ferries to Armona, Culatra and Farol all year [39]
Aljezur / west coast Surfers, couples with a car No [11] 113 km, ~1 h 41 [9] Atlantic surf coves, e.g. Arrifana [23] Not documented; coaches on the Lagos–Aljezur road [17]

Two notes on reading this. “Station in town” matters more than “has a station”: Albufeira’s is in Ferreiras, almost 7 km from the centre according to Wikipedia [14], and Portimão’s is north of the city [15]. And the Blue Flag is awarded per beach, not per town; the 2026 list is on ABAE’s site [24]. Our Algarve beaches guide goes beach by beach.

Families

On paper, three bases stand out:

  • Lagos. Meia Praia is a long, wide beach without steps, with its own train halt, and it’s named as the best area for families in a 2026 Lagos area guide [33]. The town also has a station for car-free day trips [11].
  • Portimão (Praia da Rocha). The council lists a boardwalk, a playground, toilets and a medical post at Praia da Rocha (council page last updated 2022) [22]. APA classes it as an urban beach in intensive use [21], so expect it busy in summer.
  • Albufeira. Lifeguards from 15 May to 15 October in 2026: 32 days more (17 in May, 15 in October) than the 1 June–30 September season of almost every other Algarve beach [25]. Note that the station is out of town [14].

Tavira is the eastern option: Praia do Barril has an adapted beach train with spaces for pushchairs and ramps to the sand [34]. Sagres’s Praia do Martinhal is calm and shallow but constantly windy [35]. On CP trains, under-4s sharing a seat travel free and children aged 4–12 pay half [36]. For days out and beaches with small children, see the Algarve with kids.

A month of remote work

For a workation of weeks or months, what matters is coworking within walking distance, a station and year-round services. On paper:

  • Lagos is the safest pick. Nest Coworking sells a day pass for €16 (read 2 October 2026) [31], and the station links Portimão in 16–18 minutes and Faro in about 1 h 30 [11]. Keep the rent markets apart. For a long-term residential let, Numbeo’s crowd-sourced average for a one-bedroom flat in the centre was €1,037.50 a month on 2 October 2026 (25 contributors) [30]. For a short-term furnished month, nomads.com gives a Lagos Airbnb median of $3,968 a month (October 2026) [41]. Both are orders of magnitude, not quotes, and the gap between them is the real point.
  • Tavira for a quieter month: station in town, trains to Faro in 31 to 38 minutes, hourly on weekdays but with two-hour gaps on Saturdays and Sundays [11][43]. One coworking listing exists (The Table) but has not been checked [37].
  • Sagres if surf comes first. One coliving advertises an office at €10 a day (on a page last modified in 2023) [38], and one hostel lists a 30-night “Digital Nomad Package” from €402 with breakfast [32]. That is a hostel price; the page does not state the room type or the season it applies to. Without a car, Sagres depends on the Lagos bus.
  • Faro if you fly often: 4 km from the airport [10] and the hub of the railway [11].

For a long stay along the coast, CP’s one-month passes are worth knowing: Lagos–Faro costs €187.50 and Faro–Tavira €81.25 [12]. If you are resident in Portugal, the nationwide Passe Ferroviário Verde costs €20 for 30 days on Regional and InterRegional trains; CP sells it to Portuguese citizens and foreigners resident in Portugal, so a short-stay visitor does not qualify [42]. More on coworking, internet and visas in working remotely from the Algarve.

When to book a long stay

We found no dated source on booking lead times or monthly-rate discounts in the Algarve that we would publish. Here’s what we’d do on paper: decide the base first using the table above, then compare monthly prices on a map rather than a list, because a station or a ferry pier ten minutes away changes everything. Where to search and what a month costs: monthly rentals in the Algarve.

Without a car

Pick a town on the railway with the station in town: Lagos, Faro, Olhão or Tavira [11]. The line runs Lagos–Vila Real de Santo António, with direct trains end to end since July 2026 [11]. Albufeira works for staying put, but the station is 6.7 km away [14][40]. Sagres, Carvoeiro, Alvor and Aljezur depend on buses [13]. Buses thin out after about 20:00 and at weekends [17].

The full detail (fares, buses, ferries, Bolt) is in the Algarve without a car. If you want a car for part of the stay, see car hire in the Algarve. Day-by-day plans by train and bus: Algarve itinerary.

Couples

There is no source that ranks Algarve towns for couples, so this is our reading of the facts:

  • Carvoeiro: a small town beach in a calm bay below the village [20]. Compact, with no station [16], so it suits a short stay with a hire car or taxis.
  • Tavira: a historic town on a river with island beaches a ferry ride away [28][29], and trains to Faro [11].
  • Aljezur and the west coast: Atlantic surf coves such as Arrifana, sheltered by cliffs below a fishing settlement [23]. Car territory: 113 km from the airport [9].

Winter

For winter rentals, we’d look at towns that keep running when the resorts close. The facts we could source:

  • Faro: January mean highs of 16.3 °C and lows of 8.3 °C; November–January bring 214.8 mm of the year’s 455.1 mm of rain (IPMA 1991–2020) [26]. The Praia de Faro ferry runs all year, but only five times a day from November to December (10:00 to 15:30 from Faro, operator timetable on the Faro council site, read 11 October 2026), and the Culatra ferry from Faro runs only June–August [18].
  • Olhão: ferries to Armona, Culatra and Farol run all year; Armona has four winter departures from Olhão [39].
  • Lagos and Sagres: the nearest IPMA normal (Sagres) gives January highs of 16.1 °C and 8.4 rainy days in November [27]. One Sagres hostel publishes 7-, 14- and 30-night winter deals [32].
  • Tavira: December is the wettest month (7.6 rainy days), with January afternoons of about 15 °C and nights of 6–7 °C, which matters in a flat without central heating [28].
  • Resort towns: according to algarvebus.info, town buses in Albufeira, Lagos and Portimão mostly finish around 20:00 outside summer, and Portimão’s late-night Alvor bus runs only in July and August [17].

Quick answers

What is the best area to stay in the Algarve?

It depends on the trip. On paper, Lagos covers the most cases: a railway station in town, cliff coves plus the long Meia Praia beach, and a coworking space [11][33][31]. Tavira suits a quieter stay on the railway with island beaches, Albufeira has the longest lifeguarded season (15 May to 15 October in 2026) [25], and Sagres and Aljezur suit surfers with a car. This is a research comparison, checked on 4 October 2026, not a ranking from a stay.

Where should I stay in the Algarve without a car?

Somewhere on the Lagos–Vila Real de Santo António railway with the station in town: Lagos, Faro, Olhão or Tavira. Albufeira's station is 6.7 km from the centre by road and Portimão's is more than 1 km from its centre, while Sagres, Carvoeiro, Alvor and Aljezur have no station at all (CP timetable from 19 July 2026; routing model, 4 October 2026) [11][14][40][15].

Where should families stay in the Algarve?

On paper: Lagos for Meia Praia, a long beach without steps with its own train halt; Albufeira for the longest lifeguard season (15 May–15 October 2026); Praia da Rocha in Portimão, which the council lists with a playground and a medical post; or Tavira for Praia do Barril's adapted beach train. On CP trains, children up to 3 travel free sharing a seat and 4–12-year-olds pay half [33][25][22][34][36].

How far are the Algarve towns from Faro airport?

Faro city is about 4 km from the airport (Wikipedia) [10]. The rest are by road, according to OpenStreetMap routing without traffic: Olhão 18 km (about 35 min), Tavira 43 km (53 min), Albufeira 49 km (57 min), Carvoeiro 69 km, Portimão 75 km (both about 1 h 12), Alvor 79 km, Lagos 90 km (1 h 25), Aljezur 113 km (1 h 41) and Sagres 122 km (1 h 50). These are model estimates from October 2026 [1]–[9].

Where is the best place to stay in the Algarve in winter?

On paper, a town with year-round life and transport: Faro, Olhão (whose ferries to Armona, Culatra and Farol run all year) or Lagos and Tavira on the railway. Faro's 1991–2020 normals give January highs of 16.3 °C and lows of 8.3 °C, and almost half of the year's rain (214.8 of 455.1 mm) falls between November and January [26]. Resort areas lose their late town buses outside summer, according to an enthusiast timetable site [17].

How much does a month in the Algarve cost to rent?

There is no reliable region-wide figure, and three different markets get mixed up. Long-term residential rent: Numbeo's crowd-sourced average for a one-bedroom flat in central Lagos was €1,037.50 a month on 2 October 2026, from 25 contributors [30]. Short-term furnished: nomads.com puts the Lagos Airbnb median at $3,968 a month (October 2026) [41]. Hostel: one Sagres hostel advertises a 30-night package from €402 with breakfast, without stating room type or season [32]. Treat all three as orders of magnitude, not quotes.
