Town · Madeira, Portugal, Europe
Hotel and residential town between Funchal and the airport, above the Garajau marine reserve: the Cristo Rei statue, a cable car down to a diving beach, lido pools with a children's pool and the Blue Flag Reis Magos beach. Quieter than Funchal, easier with a car. Research draft.

In detail
Caniço is the quieter alternative to Funchal on the south-east coast, between the city and the airport. Its sea-level hotel area, Caniço de Baixo, sits next to the Garajau marine reserve, with the Cristo Rei statue on the headland, a cable car down to a diving beach and lido pools built into the volcanic rock [4][5][6][7]. One 2026 guide calls it “great for families and couples who want a quieter stay” and warns it “may feel too quiet” [13]. On a steep, spread-out coast, it is easiest with a car.
Place pages with sources and 2026 lifeguard dates: Cristo Rei viewpoint, Garajau beach, Lido Galomar and Reis Magos beach.
Caniço is in the municipality of Santa Cruz, which Visit Madeira places 18 km from Funchal [3]. The main bus is CAM line 2 (new 551) between Funchal and Assomada, which on the timetable SIGA links runs every day, first from Assomada at 05:45 and last from Funchal at 23:45; that file is old, so check the times [14]. SIGA also lists line 503 (formerly 110), Funchal–Boqueirão via Caniço [12]; we did not read its timetable. For buses and passes island-wide, see Madeira without a car; for a car, Madeira car hire.
On the south-east coast between Funchal and the airport, in the municipality of Santa Cruz. It is a parish of about 24,000 people (2021) with its own hotel area by the sea, Caniço de Baixo, and the Garajau marine reserve on its western edge.
It has the pieces: the Lido Galomar complex with a children's pool and lifeguards, Reis Magos beach with lifeguards in season, and calmer evenings than central Funchal. The trade-off is that most things are spread along a steep coast, so it works best with a car. We have no first-hand verdict.
The Garajau Partial Natural Reserve, created in 1986 to protect the seabed off Ponta do Garajau. Fishing is prohibited and navigation restricted. It is one of Madeira's best-known diving spots, with dusky groupers and manta rays recorded there, and Garajau beach below the Cristo Rei statue can be reached by cable car.
Yes. CAM line 2 (new 551) runs between Funchal and Assomada in Caniço every day, from 05:45 out of Caniço to 23:45 out of Funchal; the timetable SIGA links to is an old file, so check the times on SIGA. SIGA also lists a Funchal–Boqueirão line via Caniço (line 503, formerly 110), whose timetable we did not read.
