Madeira with kidseasy levadas, pools instead of beaches, rainy days, doctors and schools

Madeira with children in 2026: the levadas short enough for small legs (and free under 13), seawater pools and the few sand beaches, cable cars and gardens with child prices, rainy-day options on the north coast, where to find a doctor, and international schools for a longer stay.

Prices and hours checked on 9 October 2026. Children’s age bands differ by attraction (under 6, under 7, under 13, under 15). We give each one as published.

The short answer: Madeira works with children if you plan around pools rather than beaches, and short levadas rather than famous long ones. Children 12 and under walk the official trails free, though they still need a booking [1]. The easy classics are 1.5 km each way [2][3]. Funchal’s seafront pool complexes have children’s pools [7][9]. Sand is rare and mostly imported, at Calheta and Machico [10][11]. For a rainy day, head to the north coast’s aquarium and science centre, or stay in Funchal’s parks and gardens.

Levadas small legs can manage

Route One way Time Why it suits kids Watch out
PR11 Vereda dos Balcões 1.5 km 1 h 30 return Nearly flat (880–870 m), ends at a viewpoint [2] Busy
PR6.1 Levada do Risco 3 km (IFCN; Visit Madeira 1.5 km) [42] 2 h return Easy, ends at a waterfall [3] Plus 2 km of road from the car park, or a €5 minibus [33]
PR6.8 Levada do Paul II 1.2 km 30 min Built to be accessible, flat [4] Short, little to see
PR9 Caldeirão Verde 8.7 km 6 h 30 return Big walk for older children Four rock tunnels, very long [5]

Every walker books a time slot on SIMplifica; adults pay €4.50 per trail, under-13s nothing [1]. Visit Madeira’s rules: children with an adult on all walks, a torch for tunnels, stay on the path, turn back in heavy rain or wind [6]. We found no official statement on pushchairs on levadas; only the “path for everyone” routes (PR6.8, PR9.1) are described as accessible [4][34].

Swimming: pools first, then sand

  • Lido, Funchal: two saltwater pools, one for children, lifeguards, lifts and ramps, open all year [7]. 2026 entry €6, ages 7–17 €2, 6 and under free [8].
  • Ponta Gorda, Funchal: next to the Lido, with a children’s pool with play equipment [9].
  • Porto Moniz natural pools: lava-rock seawater pools on the north-west tip, lifeguards all year, children’s pool and playground, €3 over age 3 (undated council page) [12].
  • Calheta: about 100 m of imported sand between two breakwaters, Blue Flag 2026 [10].
  • Machico: a pebble beach and an imported-sand beach in the bay [11].
  • Aquaparque Madeira, Santa Cruz: the island’s water park, with slides, a slow river and a children’s “aqualand” [40]. It is outdoors; a local paper reported in August 2026 that it would open all year [41], but we found no official hours or prices, so check before you go.
  • Porto Santo: a 9 km sandy beach [32], but a 3 h 15 min ferry each way in October 2026; see Madeira without a car.

  • Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça, Funchal (public): Avenida Luís de Camões 57; switchboard 291 705 600; open 24 h, and SESARAM’s paediatrics service runs a paediatric emergency there; 24-hour children’s line 969 319 732 [25][37].
  • Hospital CUF Madeira, Funchal (private): its urgent care page lists adults only, 24 hours [26]. Take children to Nélio Mendonça.
  • More on fees, EHIC and private hospitals: Healthcare in Portugal for travellers.
  • Outside Funchal: the Calheta and Machico health centres run 24-hour urgent services [27][28]. Ponta do Sol’s health centre is weekdays only.

Schools for a longer stay

  • International Sharing School Madeira (Funchal): IB school for ages 3–18, teaching in English; 2026/27 fees from €6,120 a year (early years) to €13,140 (final year), plus €800 enrolment [29].
  • International School of Madeira (Cambridge primary, ages 3–10, about €5,520–6,240 a year) and Escola da APEL (IB Diploma) appear only on an aggregator; we couldn’t confirm them on the schools’ own sites [30].

Where to stay with kids

Funchal’s Lido area is flat and close to the pools; Calheta has the sand beach but needs a car; Machico has sand and is next to the airport. All compared in where to stay in Madeira. Quick answers

Is Madeira good for kids?

For active families, yes, with two caveats: most beaches are pebble, so families swim in seawater pool complexes or on the few imported-sand beaches (Calheta, Machico), and many levadas have drops or tunnels. Short, easy routes exist, children 12 and under walk them free, and Funchal has pools with children's sections, a cable car and parks.

Which levadas are good for children?

The short, easy official routes: PR11 Vereda dos Balcões (1.5 km each way, nearly flat, about 1 h 30 return) and PR6.1 Levada do Risco (3 km each way to a waterfall on IFCN's list, about 2 h). PR6.8 and PR9.1 are short routes built to be accessible. Longer walks like PR9 Caldeirão Verde (17.4 km return, four tunnels) are for older children who walk well.

Do children pay for levada walks in Madeira?

No, not if they're 12 or under. But every walker, children included, must be booked into a time slot on the SIMplifica portal (IFCN rules for 2026). Adults pay €4.50 per trail.

Are there sandy beaches in Madeira for kids?

A few, mostly man-made: Calheta (imported sand, between two breakwaters, Blue Flag 2026), Machico bay (imported sand) and Prainha near Caniçal (natural dark sand). Porto Santo has a 9 km sand beach, but the ferry was taking 3 h 15 min each way in October 2026.

Where is the children's hospital in Madeira?

Public emergencies go to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça in Funchal (Avenida Luís de Camões 57, switchboard 291 705 600); SESARAM runs a paediatric emergency there and a 24-hour children's line, 969 319 732. The private CUF Madeira lists urgent care for adults only. For advice call Madeira's health line SRS24, 800 24 24 20 (not the mainland SNS 24). The Calheta and Machico health centres have 24-hour urgent services. In an emergency call 112.
