Working remotely from the Algarveinternet, coworking by town and visas
Working remotely from the Algarve in 2026: Portugal's measured internet speeds, coworking spaces we could verify town by town with dated prices, time-zone overlap with the UK, Europe and the US East Coast, the visa and 183-day tax questions, and notes for families and winter stays.

Prices, timetables and rules checked on 4 October 2026. Coworking prices are the operators’ own figures on that date, internet speeds are Ookla’s national medians, and tax and visa lines link to the official text. Nothing here was measured on site; where a space or a figure could not be verified, the page says so.
The short answer
Working remotely from the Algarve is realistic for most desk jobs. Portugal’s median fixed-broadband speed was 360 Mbps down and 224 Mbps up in Ookla’s August 2026 index [1], and the region’s time zone is the same as the UK’s [13]. Lagos has the widest choice of coworking spaces we could verify, Faro has two in the city centre, Portimão has the cheapest day desk we found (city-run, €10 plus VAT), and Sagres has smaller desk options built around surf stays. For anything longer than a holiday, the visa and the 183-day tax rule matter more than the Wi-Fi.
Internet: what the numbers say
Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index for Portugal, updated August 2026, gives these national medians [1]:
| Connection | Download | Upload | Latency | Global rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed broadband | 360.09 Mbps | 223.91 Mbps | 15 ms | 18th |
| Mobile | 209.01 Mbps | 23.58 Mbps | 27 ms | 28th |
Two caveats. These are medians for the whole country, built from people who chose to run a speed test, so they say little about a particular villa in the hills or a flat with old wiring. And mobile upload, at about 24 Mbps, is the number that matters for video calls on a hotspot; it is a tenth of the fixed-line figure.
We did not verify regional fibre or 5G coverage for the Algarve for this page. What we’d do on paper: ask the host for a recent speed-test screenshot before booking, and keep a mobile data plan as a backup. Our Portugal eSIM guide compares data options.
Coworking by town
We named only spaces whose own website (or, for city-run spaces, the council’s) we read on 4–5 October 2026. Prices are the operators’ published figures on that date — check before you go. The places have no pages of their own on this site yet, so the links go to the town pages.
| Town | Coworking we verified (price as published) | Railway | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lagos | Nest Coworking — day €16, week €72, month €240 [2]; Lifestyle @ Vila Mós — day €20, month €200 [3]; CENTRO Lagos — no prices on homepage [4]; Noma Village — coliving with a work area, €990 a month [5] | Yes, CP Algarve line terminus [12]; last leg to Vila Mós not checked | Most choice, longer stays, community |
| Sagres | Sagres Sun Stay — bookable desk, price not published [6]; OFF THE HOOK — office for day guests 09:00–18:00, €10 a day on a 2023 price page [7][8] | No | Surf-and-work, quiet out of season |
| Faro | KOBU Spaces — day €18.45, week €49.20, month €178.35 [9]; Alandra Square — €15 a day, from €70 a month [10] | Yes [12]; KOBU says about 12 min on foot from the station [9] | Airport, year-round city services |
| Portimão | Portimão Cowork Space (city-run, old fish market) — €10 a day plus VAT; desks from €40 a month plus VAT, but only on a six-month contract after an application and interview [27] | Yes [12] | Cheapest day desk we found; see working remotely in Portimão |
| Tavira | None verified for this page | Yes [12] | Quiet eastern base; check locally |
| Loulé / Quinta do Lago | Mucancas CoWork — day €12, week €44, month from €99, all plus VAT [28]; Golden Creative — day €15, week €55, month €160, plus VAT [29]; Spaces — centres in Loulé and at Quinta do Lago, prices not read [11] | Loulé station is about 5 km from the town [23] | Two small independent spaces plus business-centre desks |
| Albufeira | Albufeira Digital Nomads (run by the council) — free, subject to availability, Mon–Fri 09:30–13:00 and 14:00–17:30 [26] | Albufeira-Ferreiras station, almost 7 km from the centre [22] | Free desk in office hours; no weekend or evening use |
| Aljezur / west coast | None verified for this page | No | Surf, car needed |
Lagos
Lagos has the deepest bench. Nest Coworking in the centre publishes a day pass at €16, a half day at €10, a week at €72, a 10-day “Flex” membership at €136 a month and a monthly membership at €240 with 24/7 access [2]. Lifestyle @ Vila Mós, west of the centre near Porto de Mós beach, opens Monday to Friday 9:00–18:00; its day pass is €20 with a desk, monitor, refreshments and free parking, and the €200 monthly plan adds 24/7 access and the pool and gym [3]. CENTRO Lagos, in the old town, offers coworking, private offices and a meeting room but publishes no prices on its homepage [4]. Noma Village is coliving rather than drop-in coworking: from €33 a day, or €990 for a month including utilities [5].
If you’d rather work from cafés, European Coffee Trip lists The Studio.Coffee and DOT Coffee in Lagos as having free Wi-Fi and being laptop-friendly (profiles updated September 2026) [17][18]. That is a directory listing, not a test of the connection or the sockets.
Sagres
Sagres is smaller and seasonal. Sagres Sun Stay, a hostel and surf camp on the EN 268, has a cowork room with high-speed Wi-Fi, power plugs, a projector and a whiteboard; hostel guests get access, and non-guests can “Book a Desk” or the whole room, with no price on the page [6]. OFF THE HOOK is a coworking and coliving villa with a separate office building; day guests can use the office from 09:00 to 18:00 [7]. Its price page lists “Office (10€/day)”, but that page was last modified in 2023, so treat the figure as a starting point to confirm [8]. European Coffee Trip lists Picnic Sagres as laptop-friendly with free Wi-Fi, closed Tuesday and Wednesday [19].
Faro
The regional capital suits people who want an airport and year-round services. KOBU Spaces, opened by the KOBU agency in downtown Faro, is open Monday to Friday 9:30–18:30 with Saturday by arrangement; it publishes a half-day pass at €12.30, a day pass at €18.45, a week at €49.20 and a month at €178.35, all including VAT, and says the train and bus stations are about 12 minutes’ walk away [9]. Alandra Square, on Rua Mouzinho de Albuquerque in the centre, lists €15 a day, monthly plans at €70 and €100, a meeting room and 24-hour access [10].
Portimão, Tavira, Loulé, Albufeira and the west coast
- Portimão. The city runs the Portimão Cowork Space in the old fish-market building (Antiga Lota). Its rules list €10 a day and €40 a month in the first year (€50 in the second, €60 in the third), all plus VAT. The monthly rate is not a drop-in membership: it comes with an application, an interview and a six-month contract. Day use means filling in a form and showing an ID during the tourist office’s opening hours [27]. More, including two private spaces, in our Portimão remote-work guide.
- Tavira. We found a café-and-cowork listed in directories but could not confirm it on its own website, so it is not named here. Tavira is on the railway [12].
- Loulé. Two independent spaces publish their prices. Mucancas CoWork in the centre charges €12 a day, €44 a week and from €99 a month, VAT added [28]. Golden Creative charges €15 a day, €55 a week and €160 a month plus 23% VAT, opens Monday to Friday 08:00–18:00, has free parking and asks for bookings 24 hours ahead [29]. The Spaces network also lists centres in Loulé, on Avenida do Algarve, and at Quinta do Lago near Almancil [11]; we did not read their prices. See things to do in Loulé.
- Albufeira. The council runs Albufeira Digital Nomads, a free coworking space inside the INATEL Albufeira Praia hotel on Avenida Infante Dom Henrique. It opens Monday to Friday, 09:30–13:00 and 14:00–17:30, and use is subject to availability and the council’s rules [26]. The page gives no Wi-Fi speed or desk count, so call or email before you plan a week around it.
- Aljezur and the west coast. No space verified on an own website. Plan on working from your accommodation, and choose it for its connection.

Time zones and meeting overlap
Mainland Portugal runs on UTC+0 in winter and UTC+1 in summer, changing on the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October [13]. That is the same clock as the UK.
- UK and Ireland: no difference.
- Central Europe (Paris, Berlin, Prague): the Algarve is one hour behind all year, so a 9:00 start in Lagos is 10:00 in Berlin.
- US East Coast: normally five hours behind the Algarve. The US changes its clocks on different dates: in 2026, US daylight saving time runs from 8 March to 1 November [14], while Portugal’s summer time ends on 25 October. For those weeks in March and from 25 October to 1 November the gap is four hours. A New York 9:00 meeting lands at 14:00 in the Algarve for most of the year.
Visas: one paragraph
EU and EEA citizens generally don’t need a work permit to work anywhere in the EU [21], so this paragraph is for everyone else. Third-country nationals, British citizens included, can visit Portugal for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, but that is a visit, not a right to live or work there [20]. Living in Portugal while working for clients or an employer abroad needs a residence route such as Portugal’s remote-work visa, widely called the D8. The income threshold, documents and fees are in our Portugal digital nomad visa guide, which sources each figure. For health and travel cover on a long stay, see digital nomad insurance for Portugal.
Tax residency: the 183-day caution
Article 16 of Portugal’s IRS code treats you as tax resident if, in the year in question, you spend more than 183 days, consecutive or not, in Portugal in any 12-month period starting or ending in that year, or if you have a home there, on any day of that period, in conditions that suggest you intend to keep it as your habitual residence. Any day that includes an overnight stay counts as a day of presence [15].
So a long winter workation plus a summer holiday can add up, and a long-term rental can matter even under 183 days. Your home country’s rules and any tax treaty between the two countries also apply. This page is not tax advice: if you are planning months rather than weeks, speak to an accountant who knows both systems before you go.
Families: working while the kids are busy
We did not find a reliable source on international schools’ short-term places or on holiday clubs in the western Algarve, so this section stays practical rather than specific:
- Pick a base where one parent can walk to a desk. In Lagos, the town-centre spaces [2][4] make split shifts easier than a villa outside town.
- Coworking hours matter: several spaces run weekday office hours [3][9], so early-morning or late calls happen at home. Check the home connection, not only the coworking one.
- Our Algarve with kids guide covers the family side of the trip.
Winter workation
The quiet season is when a workation makes most sense for many people. The Algarve’s tourist accommodation recorded 543,800 guest nights in January 2026 against 3.23 million in August 2025, so expect far fewer people [24][25]. IPMA’s 1991–2020 normals for Faro give a mean daily maximum of 16.3 °C and minimum of 8.3 °C in January, but 214.8 mm of the year’s 455.1 mm of rain falls from November to January [16]. Ask whether the accommodation has heating before you book, and check that your chosen café or coworking space keeps winter hours. Month-by-month detail is in best time to visit the Algarve.

Quick answers
Is the internet good enough to work remotely in the Algarve?
Nationally, yes on paper. Ookla's Speedtest Global Index for Portugal (August 2026, read 4 October 2026) puts the median fixed-broadband download at 360.09 Mbps and upload at 223.91 Mbps, and the median mobile download at 209.01 Mbps [1]. Those are country-wide medians, not a guarantee for a particular flat or village, so ask your host for a speed test screenshot before you book.
Where can I find coworking in the Algarve?
Lagos has the most choice among the spaces we could verify on their own websites on 4 October 2026, including Nest Coworking (day pass €16) and Lifestyle @ Vila Mós (day pass €20). Faro has KOBU Spaces (day pass €18.45) and Alandra Square (€15 a day). Portimão has a city-run space at €10 a day plus VAT, Loulé has Mucancas CoWork (€12 a day plus VAT) and Golden Creative (€15 a day plus VAT), and Albufeira council runs a free space on weekdays. Sagres has desk options at Sagres Sun Stay and OFF THE HOOK [2][3][6][7][9][10][26][27][28][29]. Prices as of 4 October 2026 — check current.
What time zone is the Algarve in?
Mainland Portugal uses UTC+0 in winter and UTC+1 in summer, the same as the UK, and one hour behind most of central Europe. Clocks go back on the last Sunday in October, 25 October 2026, while the US East Coast changes on 1 November 2026, so for that week New York is four hours behind instead of five [13][14].
Do I need a visa to work remotely from the Algarve?
It depends on your nationality. EU citizens generally don't need a work permit anywhere in the EU [21]. British citizens can visit for up to 90 days in any 180-day period (GOV.UK, read 1 October 2026) [20], but living in Portugal and working remotely from there needs a residence route such as the remote-work visa. Our Portugal digital nomad visa guide covers the 2026 income threshold, documents and fees.
Will I become tax resident in Portugal if I work from the Algarve?
Possibly. Under article 16 of Portugal's IRS code you are resident if you spend more than 183 days, consecutive or not, in Portugal in any 12-month period starting or ending in the tax year, or if you have a home there in conditions suggesting you intend to keep it as your habitual residence [15]. Your home country's rules and any tax treaty also apply, so take professional advice before a long stay.
Is the Algarve good for a winter workation?
The climate supports it: IPMA's 1991–2020 normals for Faro give a mean daily maximum of 16.3 °C in January, though November to January brings almost half the year's rain [16]. Check that your accommodation has heating and fast internet, and that the coworking space you plan to use is open out of season.
