Practical guide
Working remotely in Portimão, Alvor and Carvoeirocoworkings and laptop cafés
Portimão has three real coworking options at three price points — a city-run space at €10 a day, a beachfront one at €16, and a members-only studio at €150 a month — plus a cowork café in Alvor. Carvoeiro has no coworking we could find. Prices and rules, checked October 2026.

Short answer: if you are based anywhere between Alvor and Carvoeiro, Portimão is where the desks are. Pick the city-run Portimão Cowork Space if you want the cheapest desk (€10 a day plus VAT) [2], Rocha Beach House if you want to walk to the beach at lunch (€16 a day) [3], or CoCreate if you are staying a month and want a quiet, members-only studio with a published 1 Gbps line [4]. We have not worked from any of them yet.

Portimão Cowork Space (municipal)
The city runs a coworking space in the old fish-market building (Edifício da Antiga Lota) on Largo da Lota [2]. It has a reception, an acoustic booth for video calls, a shared room with desks, Wi-Fi, a coffee machine and a microwave [2].
The price list in the official rules is €10 a day, or €40 a month in the first year (rising to €50 and €60 in later years), plus VAT, with 50% off for anyone aged 18–30 [2].
The catch is the paperwork. For a day, you fill in a registration form and staff grant use on the spot during the tourist office’s opening hours, on showing an ID; for foreign citizens the rules ask for an ID document and an authorisation to stay in Portugal [2]. Desks for 30 days or more need an application and an interview, and come with a six-month contract renewable up to a year; that regime is suspended once it fills half the capacity [2]. The space is aimed at entrepreneurs and independent workers who “add value to the local economy” [2]. Email [email protected] before you go [1].
Rocha Beach House
A coworking space on Avenida Tomás Cabreira, right on the Praia da Rocha seafront [3]. Hourly use is €4, a day €16, a week €55, a month €160; a premium height-adjustable desk is €199 a month for 30 to 360 days [3]. Basic passes cover business hours Monday to Friday; weekly and premium passes include 24/7 access [3]. Phone booths, a terrace, air conditioning and power at the desks are listed [3].
This is the one that fits a workation with a family: one parent works, the rest are on the beach across the road.
CoCreate
A small private coworking on Rua da Porta de São João in central Portimão, aimed at creative professionals — designers, writers, developers — with selective membership [4]. A private desk is €150 a month with a one-month minimum; ask about current availability [4]. It lists 1000 Mbps down / 250 Mbps up, phone booths, a meeting room and 24/7 key access, though it also shows weekday office hours of 09:00–17:00 [4].
Cafés
We could verify very few laptop-friendly cafés in this part of the Algarve, so the list is short on purpose:
- Da Vinci Cowork Cafè, Montes de Alvor — an all-vegan café that also calls itself a cowork space, with free Wi-Fi. OpenStreetMap lists Monday–Friday 08:00–19:00 and Saturday 09:00–14:00 [5]. It is inland of Alvor village, so you will want a car or bike.
- Velochique, a cyclists’ café known for specialty coffee and brunch, started in Monchique and now also has a café on Avenida Guanaré in Portimão [8]. We do not know its laptop policy.
- Encci, Carvoeiro — a brunch café and pizzeria open daily 09:00–22:30 [7]. Wi-Fi and laptop policy unknown.
Staying in Carvoeiro or Alvor and working
Carvoeiro has no coworking that we found, and a Carvoeiro guide we read says the same — the nearest is in Portimão [6]. By car Carvoeiro to central Portimão is about 17 minutes [9].
Alvor has the Da Vinci café inland, and Portimão is close. If you will work most days, staying in Portimão or near Praia da Rocha saves the daily drive.
Time zone
Portimão is on Europe/Lisbon time: UTC+0 in winter and UTC+1 in summer, the same as London [10]. That means calls with Central Europe start an hour earlier for you, and US East Coast afternoons run into your evening.

Travel insurance for long stays
A European health card (EHIC, or the UK’s GHIC) covers state healthcare, not everything. For a long stay, check whether a policy covers you for the whole trip, pre-existing conditions, and sports like surfing. We don’t sell or recommend specific policies.

Quick answers
Is there a coworking space in Portimão?
Yes, three that we could verify: the municipal Portimão Cowork Space in the old fish market (€10 a day plus VAT, or €40 a month on a six-month contract), Rocha Beach House on the Praia da Rocha seafront (€16 a day, €55 a week, €160 a month) and CoCreate, a members-only space for creative professionals (€150 a month).
Can tourists use the Portimão municipal coworking?
The rules allow day use on the spot during the tourist office's opening hours, after filling in a registration form and showing an ID; foreign citizens are asked for their ID and their authorisation to stay in Portugal.
