Cascais: quick answers

How far is Cascais from Lisbon?

It is the terminus of the Cascais suburban line from Cais do Sodré. CP's timetable data for October 2026 gives 40 minutes (33 on some weekday rush-hour trains), with a train every 15–20 minutes in the weekday daytime and every 20 minutes at weekends. In 2026 replacement buses run between Caxias and Cascais on weekday evenings from 21:50, Saturdays from 20:50 and Sundays from 19:50, and early on Sunday mornings from 05:30 to 08:50. Work at Oeiras station brings a new timetable from 8 November 2026; see getting around Lisbon and the coast. A Zapping validation costs €2.05 for 1 h 30 of travel on CP urban trains. Check the CP timetable before you go.

Is Cascais good for families?

On paper, very: calm beaches a short walk from the station, a long seafront promenade, and the city's aquarium and zoo within an hour by train and metro. Cascais and Oeiras are also where international schools cluster, according to a 2026 expat guide.

Cascais or Lisbon as a base?

Cascais if the beach is the daily plan and Lisbon the day trip; Lisbon if it is the other way round. Rents are similar on Numbeo (1-bedroom centre €1,565 in Cascais vs €1,425 in Lisbon, Oct 2026), so the choice is about the day you want, not price.
