Cascais vs Ericeirawhich beach base near Lisbon?
Cascais is the easy family choice: calm town beaches and a train to Lisbon every 15–20 minutes on weekdays. Ericeira is the surf town: rougher Atlantic, a smaller scene, a bus to Lisbon and the higher crowd-sourced nomad score. How they compare on beaches, work, kids, transport and cost.

Short answer: with small children and frequent Lisbon days, choose Cascais: calm town beaches by the station and a train every 15–20 minutes on weekdays, every 20 at weekends [6]. Quick answers
Is Cascais or Ericeira better for families?
For small children, Cascais: its town beaches by the station are usually sheltered (a local guide says no waves or currents), the promenade is flat, and Lisbon is a train ride away. Ericeira works for families too, especially at Praia dos Pescadores and Foz do Lizandro, but the coast is more exposed and Lisbon is a bus ride.
Is Cascais or Ericeira better for surfing?
Ericeira. It is a World Surfing Reserve with breaks for every level. From Cascais you surf at Carcavelos (beginner to intermediate, on the train line) or Guincho (wind and powerful currents).
Which is closer to Lisbon?
By time on the vehicle they are close, but Cascais is the easier trip. The train from Cais do Sodré takes about 40 minutes and runs every 15–20 minutes in the weekday daytime, every 20 at weekends (CP timetable data, October 2026); in 2026 replacement buses take over between Caxias and Cascais in the evenings, and a new timetable starts on 8 November 2026. Ericeira is about 44 minutes from Campo Grande only on the 2801 bus, which ran 23 times on a sample weekday but three times a day on the sample weekend; the other lines take 56 to 99 minutes depending on line and direction.
