Calm town beaches in Cascais (Conceição and Duquesa) a few minutes' walk from the train terminus; usually sheltered; a local guide calls them suitable for children with no waves or currents (cascais-portugal.com, 2026). Conditions change: follow the flags and lifeguards.

Towns

A residential beach town on the Cascais train line, about 12 km west of Lisbon: a long Blue Flag 2026 surf beach, surf schools that teach children from six, a park with playgrounds and a coworking at €15 + VAT a day. Research draft.

A seaside town at the end of the train line from Lisbon: calm town beaches a few minutes from the station, a promenade to Estoril, surf at Carcavelos and Guincho. The family-friendly way to have Lisbon and the beach. Research draft.

Lisbon's beach town across the Tagus: more than 13 km of continuous sand, ten Blue Flag 2026 beaches, surf schools on almost every stretch and the Arriba Fóssil cliffs behind. Reachable without a car by direct bus or by ferry plus bus. Research draft.

A whitewashed fishing town 35 km north-west of Lisbon and Europe's first World Surfing Reserve: surf for every level, a handful of coworkings and calm small beaches in town. Small enough to walk, close enough for Lisbon days. Research draft.

Portugal's capital as a base for weeks, not a weekend: residential neighbourhoods for families and remote work, the aquarium and zoo for kids, and trains to the Cascais beaches and Sintra. Research draft, not first-hand.
In detail
The Lisbon coast is the capital plus the Atlantic towns you can reach from it in under an hour: Cascais and Carcavelos at the end of the riverside train line, Sintra in the forested hills, and Ericeira, a surf town on the open Atlantic to the north-west. It is the one place in Portugal where a city break and a beach month fit into the same stay.
| Base | What it is | In one line | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lisbon | Capital, 24 parishes | Museums, aquarium, coworkings; base in a residential neighbourhood, not the old town | Lisbon |
| Cascais | Seaside town, end of the train line | Calm town beaches, promenade, 40 minutes or so to Lisbon by train | Cascais |
| Ericeira | Surf town, World Surfing Reserve since 2011 | Small, walkable, surf for every level; bus to Lisbon | Ericeira |
| Carcavelos | Surf beach town on the Cascais line | Learner surf, a park for kids, coworking €15 + VAT a day | Carcavelos |
| Costa da Caparica | Beach town across the Tagus | 13 km of sand, ten Blue Flag 2026 beaches; bus or ferry + bus | Costa da Caparica |
| Sintra | UNESCO cultural landscape since 1995 | Palaces and forest; better as a day trip than a base for most | Sintra, day trip from Lisbon |
Choosing between them: where to stay on the Lisbon coast compares the neighbourhoods and towns by trip type, and Cascais vs Ericeira settles the most common beach-base question.

Yes, that is the point of this region. Cascais is the end of the suburban train line from Cais do Sodré, Sintra the end of the line from Rossio, and Ericeira about 35 km north-west of Lisbon by bus or car. A single Navegante Metropolitano pass (€40 per calendar month) covers trains and buses across the metropolitan area.
Outside the historic centre. Sources point families to Parque das Nações, Campo de Ourique or Estrela inside Lisbon, and to Cascais or Oeiras on the train line. Ericeira suits families who want a small town and surf. See our where-to-stay guide for the trade-offs.
Yes. Lisbon has dozens of coworking spaces with day passes from around €15–25; Cascais has a tourism-office coworking at €20 a day; Ericeira has several, including Kelp at €17 a day (operator prices, 2026). nomads.com lists Lisbon at 101 Mbps and Ericeira at 96 Mbps (crowd-sourced, Oct 2026).
