The notes

What the sources say (research)

  • What it is: a fortified tower built between 1514 and 1519 on a basalt outcrop in the Tagus, on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1983 together with the Jerónimos Monastery. It reopened to visitors on 27 May 2026 after conservation works. [museusemonumentos.pt; mosteirojeronimos.torrebelem.gov.pt]
  • Hours (2026): Tuesday to Sunday 9:30–17:30, last entry 17:00. The ticket kiosk in front of the monastery closes at 16:30. Closed on Mondays, 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 13 June and 25 December, and it can close when the weather makes the visit unsafe. [mosteirojeronimos.torrebelem.gov.pt, 10 Oct 2026]
  • Tickets: €15 normal. Half price for over-65s, for 13 to 24 year olds and with the family ticket (at least one adult and one child, sold only at the physical ticket office). Free for children up to 12. Residents of Portugal get free entry on up to 52 days a year under the state “Acesso 52” scheme (register once at a ticket office). The official site says tickets often sell out and cannot then be bought on the day, so book online. No audio guides. [mosteirojeronimos.torrebelem.gov.pt]
  • Access: step-free only to the ground floor of the bastion. [mosteirojeronimos.torrebelem.gov.pt]
  • Pair it with: the Jerónimos Monastery (€18, same closing days) for a Belém half day; more in things to do in Lisbon.
