Short answer: in central Algarve, pick by what you’ll do all day. Families on a beach week: Albufeira, but away from the nightlife streets named in the council’s noise order (the Strip, Rua da Oura, the old town), or Armação de Pêra [2][4][5]. A work week or month: Loulé, the only town here with several coworkings that publish prices [7][8]. Golf, boats and a resort: Vilamoura [16]. Quiet, with a car: Silves, inland. None of these towns has its railway station in the centre [10][11][12]. If you stay put in one place, you can manage with town buses and taxis; for daily beach-hopping or the inland walks, a car is simpler. This page is research; we haven’t stayed in these towns.

Families

  • Albufeira, outside the nightlife streets. You get the longest lifeguard season in the Algarve, until 15 October [2], the old-town beach with a lift (Peneco), and Zoomarine 10 km away [17]. Sleep away from Avenida Sá Carneiro, Rua da Oura, the Baixa and the old town, which the council’s noise order names [5]; Olhos de Água or the São Rafael side are the obvious places to look. More in is Albufeira worth it.
  • Armação de Pêra: a long Blue Flag beach, lifeguards 1 June–30 September [4], and 8 km from Zoomarine [17]. We know less about its services, so check them before booking.

A work week or a month

  • Loulé is the pick. Mucancas charges from €12 a day or €99 a month plus VAT [7], and Golden Creative €15 a day or €160 a month plus VAT, weekdays 08:00–18:00 [8]. It’s the closest of these bases to Faro airport, 21 km away [1]. The beach is a 17-minute drive to Vilamoura [1]. See things to do in Loulé.
  • Vilamoura works if you want the work desk where you sleep: Outsite runs a coliving there with coworking areas, from $62 a night, with 30% off stays of 30 nights or more [9]. It doesn’t say whether non-guests can use the desks. What to do in Vilamoura itself: things to do in Vilamoura.
  • Albufeira: only the council’s free coworking room, open weekdays with a lunch break [6].

Budget for a long stay

Crowd-sourced rents differ a lot, but both samples are small. Numbeo puts renting a one-bedroom flat in central Albufeira at €1,162.50 a month (page with 28 contributors over 18 months, updated 2 October 2026) [13], and in central Quarteira at €750 (6 contributors, 27 July 2026) [14]. Numbeo has no usable figure for Loulé. A furnished holiday let for one month is a different market, usually priced per night. Use these as a direction, not a price.

Quiet

  • Silves: inland, with a castle town and the coast 20 minutes away by car. See the Silves day trip.
  • Loulé: a working town rather than a resort [7][8][11].

Quick answers

Where should families stay in central Algarve?

On paper, Albufeira away from its nightlife streets, or Armação de Pêra. Albufeira has the longest lifeguard season in the Algarve (15 May–15 October in 2026), many Blue Flag beaches and Zoomarine 10 km away; Armação de Pêra has a long Blue Flag beach with lifeguards from 1 June to 30 September and is 8 km from Zoomarine. Avoid sleeping on Avenida Sá Carneiro, Rua da Oura or in the old town's nightlife streets, which Albufeira's 2026 noise order names as complaint hotspots.

Where should remote workers stay in central Algarve?

On our research, Loulé. It has two coworkings with published prices (Mucancas from €12 a day + VAT; Golden Creative €15 a day + VAT, Mon–Fri 08:00–18:00) and an HQ centre next to the market, and is 21 km from Faro airport. The beaches at Quarteira and Vilamoura are 14 km away by road.

Is Vilamoura a good base?

For golf, boats and a resort holiday, yes: the marina has 825 berths and Vilamoura beach holds a Blue Flag. For a month of remote work, we would choose Loulé: in Vilamoura we found a coliving (Outsite) but no stand-alone coworking with published prices.

Which central Algarve town is closest to Faro airport?

Loulé, 21 km and about 38 minutes by road without traffic. Vilamoura is 28 km (46 min), Albufeira 49 km (57 min), Armação de Pêra 56 km (62 min) and Silves 67 km (68 min), by OpenStreetMap routing.
