Short answer: Vilamoura is a resort built around its marina, so start there: walk the quays, charter a boat or book water sports. Then spend an hour at Cerro da Vila, a Roman villa and museum five minutes’ walk away (standard ticket €4, concessions €2, free up to 13 [5]), take a day on the beaches with the Falésia cliffs in view to the west, and walk the nature trail in the environmental park. Golf is the other half of Vilamoura; we cover it only briefly. We haven’t stayed in Vilamoura; prices and details below come from the marina, the resort, the council and the parks, read in October 2026.

Choosing between Vilamoura, Albufeira and Loulé as a base is a separate question: where to stay in central Algarve.

The marina

1. Walk the marina. The Marina de Vilamoura has 825 berths for yachts up to 60 m and is marking 50 years [1]; it holds a Blue Flag for 2026 [3]. The marina calls Vilamoura a flat coastal town with traffic-free paths [2], so the quays make an easy walk with a pushchair.

2. Get on the water. The marina lists parasailing, jet skis and boat charters among its activities [2], and the beach next to it adds water-skiing, diving, snorkelling and paddleboats [4]. Ask each operator where the trip goes and how long it spends at sea. If the Benagil cave is what you want to see, read our Benagil cave guide before you book: swimming into the cave and landing on its beach are banned, and motor boats may stay inside for two minutes [16].

Cerro da Vila: the Roman villa

3. Cerro da Vila. A few minutes’ walk from the marina [2][5], Cerro da Vila is the excavated site of a Roman maritime villa of the 1st to 5th centuries AD, with mosaics, private and public baths, tanks for fish sauce, funerary monuments and traces of a river port [5]. The site was occupied from the 1st century BC to the 11th century AD, and its museum opened in 2000 and was renovated in 2021 [13]. Inside, the displays run from Bronze Age graves found in Vilamoura to the Islamic period [5].

Tickets, from the site’s own page: €4 for ages 14 to 64, €2 for students and over-65s, €2 each for groups of more than 10, and free for children up to 13 [5]. The site’s page shows no opening hours. An undated council page gives 09:30–12:30 and 14:00–18:00 with a €3 ticket [6], so treat those hours as a guide and phone +351 289 312 153 first [5].

The beaches and Falésia

4. Vilamoura’s beaches. The marina counts about three kilometres of sand in front of Vilamoura [1]. West of the marina, Rocha Baixinha Nascente has over 3 km of fine sand, with a car park, a first-aid post, toilets, facilities suitable for wheelchair users, sunbeds, kayaks and paddleboats [4]. Vilamoura beach’s official bathing season in 2026 ran from 1 June to 30 September [3].

5. The Falésia cliffs. Look west along the sand and you see the red cliffs of Praia da Falésia [4]. Its two official bathing areas, Alfamar and Açoteias, belong to Albufeira, and their 2026 bathing season runs until 15 October; by road you reach them via Aldeia das Açoteias [9]. Alfamar is about 14 km and 23 minutes from the marina in a routing model without traffic [10]. Other beaches of the region, with lifeguard dates beach by beach: Algarve beaches.

Nature, cycling and golf

6. The environmental park. Vilamoura’s nature trail is just over 5 km long, starting by the Ribeira de Quarteira, passing the equestrian centre and farmland with carob, almond and fig trees, to two bird hides on the lakes and reed beds [7]. The resort names purple herons, little bitterns, purple swamphens and marsh harriers among the birds you may see; bring water, keep dogs on a leash and light no fires [7]. The marina describes the park as a protected agricultural and ecological reserve [2]. By road it is about 7 km from the marina [10].

7. Cycle or run the flat paths. Vilamoura is flat, with traffic-free paths and tracks and a public bike-sharing scheme, according to the marina [2]. There is also a tennis and padel centre and a casino [2].

8. Golf, in brief. The resort has five championship courses, the oldest, the Old Course, opened in 1969 [8]. Tee times, green fees and course choice are best taken from the courses themselves; we haven’t researched them.

With kids

  • Cerro da Vila is free for children up to 13 [5], and a short visit.
  • The beach by the marina lists paddleboats, kayaks, toilets and a first-aid post [4]; its official bathing season runs from June to September [3].
  • Aquashow in Quarteira, about 7 km by road [10], has an indoor water park open daily from 1 October 2026 [11]. Useful on a grey day.
  • Zoomarine at Guia is about 26 km and 30 minutes by road without traffic (routing model) [10]; in autumn it opens on fewer days: Tuesday to Saturday in October 2026, and Thursday to Saturday in November until 28 November [12].

Ticket prices for the parks, read from their own sites, are in the Algarve with kids, along with car seats, doctors and which beaches suit small children.

In autumn and winter

After 30 September, when Vilamoura beach’s bathing season ends [3], plan around the marina, Cerro da Vila, the nature trail (the resort says the park draws birds all year round [7]) and Aquashow’s indoor pools [11]. Temperatures, rain and the sea month by month: Vilamoura weather by month.

Day trips from Vilamoura

9. Quarteira. Next door to the east, Quarteira has 2 km of beach, a seafront promenade, the Calçadão, and a fishing port [14].

10. Loulé. About 15 km and 17 minutes inland by road, without traffic in a routing model [10]. Its domed market hall opened in 1908 [15]; the castle, the craft workshops and the Saturday market are in things to do in Loulé.

11. Albufeira. The old town, the boat trips and Paderne castle are in things to do in Albufeira.

Getting there and where to stay

From Faro airport, Vamus line 55 runs from the terminal to Vilamoura in 41 to 51 minutes, six times a day (08:30 to 19:20), with no weekend or holiday service from November [17]; times by day, and the bus-and-train alternatives, are in Faro airport to Albufeira and Vilamoura. For the environmental park, Falésia and the parks, a car is simpler: Algarve car hire.

Where to stay: near the marina, Cerro da Vila and the beach are within a few minutes’ walk [2][5]. For a work stay, inland Loulé has the coworkings; the comparison is in where to stay in central Algarve.

Quick answers

What is there to do in Vilamoura apart from the beach and golf?

Walk the marina, where boats can be chartered and water sports booked; see the Roman villa and museum of Cerro da Vila, five minutes' walk from the marina (€4 for ages 14 to 64, free up to 13); walk or cycle the 5 km nature trail in the environmental park with its two bird hides; and drive 15 km inland to Loulé's market.

How much is Cerro da Vila?

On the site's own page, read in October 2026: €4 for ages 14 to 64, €2 for students and over-65s, €2 each for groups of more than 10, and free for children up to 13. It publishes no opening hours; an undated council page gives 09:30–12:30 and 14:00–18:00. Phone +351 289 312 153 before you go.

Is Vilamoura good for kids?

For a beach holiday, yes: the beach next to the marina lists paddleboats, kayaks, toilets and a first-aid post, Cerro da Vila is free for children up to 13, the Aquashow indoor water park in Quarteira is about 7 km away, and Zoomarine about 26 km. Vilamoura beach's official bathing season in 2026 ran from 1 June to 30 September.

Can you get to Falésia beach from Vilamoura?

The Falésia cliffs begin just west of Vilamoura's beaches, so you see them from the sand. The two official Falésia bathing areas, Alfamar and Açoteias, belong to Albufeira and are reached by road via Aldeia das Açoteias; Alfamar is about 14 km and 23 minutes by car from the marina in a routing model without traffic.
