Benagil cavehow to visit legally and safely (rules checked 2026)

You can't swim into Benagil cave or land on its beach. You see it from a licensed boat (2 minutes inside) or a guided kayak/SUP group (up to 8 minutes), or from the clifftop trail. What the 2024 rules and the 2025 amendment say, where to park, and what works with kids.

Short answer: you can see Benagil cave in three legal ways — from a licensed boat (two minutes inside), from a guided kayak or SUP group (up to eight minutes inside), or from the clifftop on the Seven Hanging Valleys trail. Swimming in, landing on the cave’s beach and unguided kayak rentals are all banned under the Portimão harbour master’s rules [1][2].

The rules, in plain English

The cave (Algar de Benagil) is regulated by Edital 019/2024 of the Capitania do Porto de Portimão, in force since 13 August 2024 [1][4], and amended by Edital 009/2025 of 2 July 2025 [2][3]. The rules cover the coast between Vale da Lapa and Albandeira [1]. Coming from Lagos by boat? Our Benagil entry for Lagos has the marina options and driving distance.

Banned for everyone [1]:

  • landing on, or sunbathing on, the sand inside the cave;
  • getting into the cave by swimming or with any flotation aid;
  • visits when visibility is under 1,000 m;
  • diving or freediving in the caves;
  • navigation at night (between sunset and sunrise);
  • fishing in or near the cave.

How visits work since the 2025 amendment [2]:

Compared Motor boats Kayaks and SUPs
Entrance West entrance only East entrance only, single file, U-turn
At the same time inside Up to 5 Up to 14
Time inside 2 minutes No more than 8 minutes per group
Group — Up to 6 craft with 1 guide (first-aid trained)
Without a guide — Tours and rentals not allowed

On every visit, everyone wears a life jacket for the whole time, and helmets are required near the rockfall strips below the cliffs, caves and sinkholes [1][2].

The editais set fines by type of breach, from €25–€20,000 for an individual who does not wear the required protective equipment [2] up to €2,000–€216,000 for a serious environmental offence [1][2]. For a visitor the practical point is simpler: since 2025, kayak and SUP tours and rentals are not allowed without a guide [2] — book a guided tour.

Option 1: a boat trip

Boat trips to the caves leave from the marinas of Portimão and Lagos, among others. Two we checked:

  • Algarve SunBoat runs Benagil cave trips on electro-solar boats from Marina de Portimão — a 12 m catamaran for up to 30 people and a 7 m boat for up to 10 [10]. Their homepage does not list prices or age limits.
  • Seafaris runs a 1h45 Benagil speedboat trip from Marina de Lagos; the listing says it is not for children under 6 [11].

From Portimão the cave is a short trip along the coast; from Lagos it is the longer option. Remember the two-minute limit: a boat trip is mainly a coastal cruise, with the cave as one short stop. If the cave itself is the point, a kayak gives you more time inside.

Option 2: a guided kayak or SUP tour

Kayak and SUP groups launch from Praia de Benagil, the small beach next to the cave, which the beach registry describes as the departure point for kayak and boat tours [5]. Under the 2025 rules you go in a group of up to six craft with a guide, enter by the east entrance and stay inside for up to eight minutes [2].

We have not compared individual kayak operators yet. When you choose one, ask three things: is the tour guided all the way to the cave (it must be), what is the minimum age, and what happens if the sea is rough on your day.

Option 3: see it from above

The Seven Hanging Valleys trail (Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos) runs 5.7 km one way along the cliffs from Praia de Vale Centeanes to Praia da Marinha, about 11.2 km there and back, rated medium by the municipality [8][9]. It passes Benagil, and a hiking guide notes that the hole in the cave roof is visible from the clifftop [13]. It costs nothing and needs no booking. Details in our Seven Hanging Valleys guide.

Stay on the marked path and respect any fences and signs: the official rules mark rockfall risk strips along these cliffs and caves [1], and the clifftop is the same eroding limestone.

Getting there and parking

By road, Benagil is about 16.5 km and 22 minutes from central Portimão and about 8 km and 14 minutes from Carvoeiro (routing model, no traffic) [12]. Practically, you need a car or a taxi.

Parking at the beach is the bottleneck. Since July 2025 the car park by Benagil beach has been run by the Lagoa volunteer firefighters at €3 a day, 08:00–18:00 [6]. An independent guide counts about 50 spaces there plus a free clifftop lot, and suggests parking at Praia do Carvalho (about 15 minutes’ walk) or Vale Centeanes (about 30 minutes) in peak season [7]. Arrive early in July and August.

With children

  • Life jackets for everyone, all the time — this is in the rules, not a suggestion [1].
  • Check the minimum age before booking. One Lagos speedboat tour does not take children under 6 [11]; others will have their own limits.
  • Two minutes is short. For small children a calm, slower boat trip may be better than a fast one, even if the cave stop is the same length.
  • Praia de Benagil had lifeguards from 1 June to 30 September in 2026 and has toilets and a restaurant, but it is small and not step-free [5].

When to go

Trips depend on the sea: the rules only allow visits when weather and sea conditions permit and no navigation warning closes the caves [1]. Book a morning slot if you can, so that a cancelled trip can move to another day. Outside the summer the beach and car park are much less crowded [7].

    Quick answers

    Can you swim to Benagil cave?

    No. Since 13 August 2024 the Portimão harbour master's rules (Edital 019/2024) ban entering the cave swimming or with flotation aids, and ban landing on or using the sand inside. The 2025 amendment (Edital 009/2025) kept those bans.

    Can you rent a kayak and paddle to Benagil cave on your own?

    Not as a rental. The 2025 amendment says kayak and SUP tours and rentals are not allowed without a guide, and inside the cave non-motorised craft go in groups of up to 6 with one guide, for no more than 8 minutes.

    How long do boats stay inside Benagil cave?

    Two minutes per motor boat. Since the 2025 amendment, up to 5 motor boats may be inside at the same time, entering and leaving by the west entrance; kayaks and SUPs use the east entrance.

    Can you see Benagil cave from above?

    From the clifftop, yes. The Seven Hanging Valleys trail (5.7 km one way between Vale Centeanes and Praia da Marinha, per the Lagoa municipality) passes Benagil, and hiking guides note the hole in the cave roof is visible from the top. Stay on the marked path and respect fences and signs.

    Is a Benagil boat trip OK for children?

    Usually, if your child is fine on a small boat. Everyone on board must wear a life jacket for the whole visit (Edital 019/2024, kept in 2025). Some operators set a minimum age; one Lagos speedboat tour does not take children under 6. Check the operator's age limit and expect the trip to be cancelled when the sea is rough.
