In detail
Angra do Heroísmo is the main town on Terceira, the Azores’ second gateway island after São Miguel. Its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site: an obligatory Atlantic port of call from the 15th century until steamships, badly damaged by an earthquake on 1 January 1980 and since rebuilt [2]. It makes a compact base for a few days: Monte Brasil on the edge of town, two lava caves and the Biscoitos rock pools within about 25 minutes’ drive (routing model, see each place).
For Gruta do Natal, Biscoitos and Serra do Cume, see the neighbouring Praia da Vitória area.
Average highs run from 16.5 °C in February to 25.5 °C in August; 1,032 mm of rain a year on about 120 days. July is the driest month (27.3 mm, 4.8 rainy days), December the wettest (154.4 mm, 14.8 days) [4]. That’s a little cooler than Ponta Delgada, with similar rain (Azores weather by month).
Os Montanheiros say there is no public transport to Algar do Carvão or Gruta do Natal [12]. Plan a car for a day or a local tour; Angra itself you can walk.
Numbered references match the source list on this page. All read on 9 October 2026.
By air: Azores Airlines flies Ponta Delgada (PDL) to Terceira (TER, Lajes airport). On the airline's fare page, return economy fares for October 2026 dates ranged from €60 to €185 when we read it on 10 October (prices seen in the previous days; €60–185 a day earlier). Fares move daily, so check before you book. Flight Connections counted about 175 flights from Terceira to Ponta Delgada in October 2026. We did not find a São Miguel–Terceira ferry in Atlânticoline's October timetable.
It's about 21 km, roughly 21 minutes by car. By bus, the island operator EVT publishes airport–Angra connections from the stop at departures, €2.95: some line 5 buses go straight to Angra in about 45 minutes, others change in Praia da Vitória (1 h to 1 h 45 Monday to Saturday, up to 2 h 40 on Sundays); weekday departures from 06:40 to 18:40 on its timetable PDF (undated, check before you rely on it).
Probably not. Os Montanheiros, who manage the cave, say visits will be suspended from late October or November 2026 until the middle or end of the first quarter of 2027 to finish the new visitor centre. Until then it opens Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays 14:30–17:00, €10. Gruta do Natal stays open on the same days, €9.
For the caves, yes or a tour: Os Montanheiros state there is no public transport to Algar do Carvão or Gruta do Natal. Angra itself is walkable, and there is a bus from the airport.
