In detail
Short answer: Carcavelos is the Cascais train line’s surf town. The beach is long, Blue Flag 2026 and full of surf schools; the town behind it is residential, with a big park and a coworking. For a family that wants surf lessons and Lisbon within a train ride, it is a residential alternative to central Cascais. We have no rent figures for Carcavelos yet.
| Carcavelos | Cascais | |
|---|---|---|
| Beach | One long surf beach | Small town beaches, usually more sheltered |
| Kids | Surf lessons from 6, park, summer ocean pool nearby | Usually sheltered town beaches (conditions vary), promenade, Tamariz pool |
| Work | Cowork da Praia €15 + VAT/day | Tourism-board coworking €20/day |
| Feel | Residential, surf crowd | Historic resort town, end of the line |
Both are on the same train line, so the honest answer is often “stay in one, spend Saturdays in the other”. For the other beach bases, see Cascais vs Ericeira and where to stay on the Lisbon coast.
The nearest public paediatric emergency department is at Hospital de Cascais, open 24 hours for children up to 18. In the Lisbon region, call SNS 24 (808 24 24 24) before going unless it is an emergency; in an emergency call 112. More in healthcare in Portugal for travellers.
By the Cascais line suburban train from Cais do Sodré; Carcavelos is a stop between Lisbon and Cascais. CP's timetable data for October 2026 gives about 26 minutes from Cais do Sodré, with a train every 15–20 minutes in the weekday daytime and every 20 minutes at weekends (CP timetable data, recounted 26 October 2026). Work at Oeiras station brings a new Cascais-line timetable from 8 November 2026, with more all-stations trains at rush hour. A Zapping validation costs €2.05 for 1 h 30 on CP urban trains (CP). Check the CP timetable for your date.
It is the Lisbon area's best-known learner beach, and schools work on the sand all year. Carcavelos Surf School runs kids' lessons for ages 6–11 and states FPS (Portuguese Surf Federation) accreditation. Waves get bigger in winter, so book a lesson rather than paddling out alone.
Yes. Cowork da Praia on Rua da Alemanha sells a day pass at €15 + VAT and a week at €60 + VAT, weekdays 9:00–18:00. Lobo Cowork in São João do Estoril charges €20 + VAT a day, by availability.
Carcavelos if surf and a quieter residential town matter more; Cascais if you want usually more sheltered town beaches, a historic centre and the end of the line. Both are on the same train line, so you can do the other as a day out.
