About the data
- Air temperature and rain come from the IPMA climate normals 1991–2020 for Faro, station 554 (37.0166N, 7.9719W, 5 m). This is PDF version 1.0 of 2024, a hybrid series of observed and modelled data [1].
- IPMA has no normals file for Vilamoura, Quarteira, Loulé or Albufeira. Faro is the nearest station, about 14 km in a straight line from Vilamoura and 13 km from Quarteira [3]. Both towns are on the same south coast at a similar height, so the table should be close, but it is not Vilamoura data.
- “High” and “Low” are the mean daily maximum and minimum. “Rain days” counts days with at least 1 mm of rain [1].
- The sea column uses NOAA OISST v2.1 Final, 2001–2020, at the offshore grid point 36.875° N, 8.125° W near Quarteira. We average daily SST within each calendar month of each year, then give the 20 annual monthly means equal weight and round only the final result to 0.1 °C. This gridded offshore proxy is not a measurement at a particular beach [2][4].
- The PDF has no sunshine hours, wind or humidity, so this page leaves them out.

- All columns except the sea come from IPMA normals 1991–2020, station 554 [1]. The sea column contains NOAA OISST 2001–2020 offshore monthly means near Quarteira [4].
- Warm nights (minimum of 20 °C or more): 44.7 a year, mostly July (12.9) and August (14.9). Expect warm bedrooms in high summer [1].
- Very hot days (35 °C or more): 3.1 a year. The record in the period is 44.3 °C on 25 July 2004 [1].
- Frost: none. The lowest minimum in 30 years was −0.3 °C on 5 February 2012 [1].
- Heavy rain (10 mm or more in a day): 15.6 days a year, most in December (3.2) and November (2.7). The wettest day was 90.0 mm on 23 December 1992 [1].
- Sea averages: monthly means range from 15.6 °C in February to 21.2 °C in September. They are not daily minimum/maximum temperatures or a forecast for your swim [4].
What the numbers mean for a trip
- Beach weeks with children: June to September are the months with almost no rain and warm water. September has the warmest sea of the year (21.2 °C) and fewer very hot days than July or August [1][4].
- Working from here in winter: expect highs of 16–17 °C, nights of 8–10 °C and a rain day roughly every four or five days from November to January [1]. Nights like that matter in a holiday flat without central heating, so ask about heating before you book a month.
- Shoulder months: in April, May and October, highs run from 20.7 to 23.5 °C, with 4 to 6 rain days a month [1].
