Best time to visit the Algarve, month by month
May, June and September give the best balance of warm days, dry weather, and a usable sea outside the school-holiday peak; July and August are the hottest months and August the busiest; October to April is the quiet, mild season for long stays. Data: IPMA, INE, sea temperatures.

Climate figures and statistics checked on 4 October 2026. Weather figures are 30-year averages, not a forecast for your week. Crowd and price figures come from Portugal’s statistics office (INE) for two sample months; we did not find an official month-by-month price series for the region.
The best time to visit the Algarve is June or September: average highs of about 27 °C at Faro, almost no rain, a sea of 20–22 °C, and they sit either side of the July–August school-holiday peak [1][8][7]. May and early October are the next best on weather. July and August are the hottest and most crowded months. November to March is mild, quiet and wetter: good for walking, working and long stays, not for swimming.
What follows is the month table, then the answer for each type of trip: beaches, families, remote work, and winter.
The Algarve month by month
South-coast figures are IPMA’s 1991–2020 normals for Faro [1]; Sea: NOAA OISST v2.1 offshore surface temperatures, 2001–2020, calculated and checked on 11 October 2026 (Faro 36.875° N, 7.875° W [8]). We average daily values within each month and year, then give each of the 20 annual monthly means equal weight. These 0.25° grid cells are coastal proxies, not measurements at individual beaches or a forecast. “Rain days” counts days with at least 1 mm.
| Month | High °C | Low °C | Rain days | Days ≥ 30 °C | Sea °C | In one line |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 16.3 | 8.3 | 6.0 | 0 | 16.6 | Quiet season (INE: 543,800 guest nights, Jan 2026); short days |
| February | 17.0 | 8.8 | 5.4 | 0 | 15.8 | Mild days; sea at its coldest |
| March | 18.9 | 10.8 | 5.6 | 0 | 15.8 | Spring walking weather, still cold water |
| April | 20.7 | 12.4 | 5.3 | 0 | 16.7 | Warm days, still unsettled |
| May | 23.5 | 15.0 | 3.8 | 1.2 | 18.1 | Beach weather begins; sea still fresh |
| June | 26.8 | 17.8 | 0.8 | 5.3 | 19.9 | Our pick on paper: hot, dry, before the peak |
| July | 29.4 | 19.6 | 0.2 | 13.1 | 21.0 | Peak heat and peak season |
| August | 29.2 | 19.9 | 0.2 | 12.4 | 21.5 | Peak: 3.23 million guest nights, room rate €217.80 (Aug 2025) |

Three things the table hides:
- The west coast is cooler. Sagres, at the south-western tip, averages a 25.9 °C high in August against Faro’s 29.2 °C, and a 16.1 °C high in January against Faro’s 16.3 °C – so the difference is a summer one [1][2]. If you are heat-averse in July, the west is the place; if you want the hottest beach days on average, the east and centre are. See Sagres weather by month and Lagos weather by month for the town-level tables.
- Daylight swings by five hours. At Faro’s latitude the day is about 14 h 40 min long at the June solstice and about 9 h 40 min at the December solstice (computed here from the latitude, standard sunrise/sunset definition). That matters more for a winter workation than the temperature does.
- Rain comes in bursts. Faro gets 455 mm a year, and about 60% of it falls between October and January [1]. A “6 rain days” month can mean one wet week and three dry ones.
Crowds and prices: what the official numbers show
We did not find an official month-by-month price index for the Algarve, so instead of guessing we use INE’s tourist-accommodation statistics for two contrasting months [4][5]:
| Indicator | August 2025 | January 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Guest nights in Algarve tourist accommodation | 3,233,700 | 543,800 |
| Share of all guest nights in Portugal | 30.3% | about 14.5% (computed from INE’s regional table) |
| Of which Portuguese residents | 1,169,900 | 132,100 |
| Average rate per occupied room (ADR) | €217.80 (highest of any region) | not given for the Algarve |
| Bed occupancy | 76.0% | not given for the Algarve |
Read it as: August has roughly six times as many guest nights as January. Over a third of August’s nights are Portuguese residents, so the peak is a domestic holiday peak too, not only a foreign one [4]. August’s average room rate of €217.80 was the highest in the country [4]. INE’s “tourist accommodation” covers hotels, local accommodation (alojamento local) units with 10 or more beds and rural tourism; smaller holiday lets are outside these figures, and we did not find an equivalent monthly series for them. We only compared these two months, so we make no claim about prices in June or September.
Best time for beaches and swimming
June to September, with September the sweet spot for warm water. The official bathing season – lifeguards on designated beaches – runs 1 June to 30 September in most Algarve municipalities in 2026, and 15 May to 15 October in Albufeira [6]. Outside those dates beaches are open but mostly unguarded.
The offshore Faro sea averages 19.9 °C in June and 21.0 °C in October [8]. For which beach suits what, see the Algarve beaches guide.
Best time for families
- If you are tied to school holidays: late June or the first half of July avoids the very top of the peak. In England, state-school dates are set by each council or school, so check yours [7]; INE’s figures show August is also when Portuguese residents holiday in the Algarve in large numbers [4].
- If you are not tied to school dates: June and September give the warm sea and long days without the August prices and crowds.
- Small children and heat: Faro averages 13 days a year at 30 °C or more in July and 12 in August [1]. The west coast is cooler, the south coast has the calmer water. Our Algarve with kids guide covers beaches, attractions and practicalities.
Best time for a workation or a long stay
For remote work the off-season, October to May, is the strongest case: mild days (16–24 °C highs), far fewer visitors [5], and accommodation that is easier to find for a month. The trade-offs are shorter days in December and January, wetter weeks from October to January [1], and some places that close or cut hours outside the season.
A practical pattern: book a month in October, March or April, when the weather is still good for being outdoors after work and the summer price peak is behind or ahead of you. See working remotely from the Algarve for internet and coworking, and where to stay in the Algarve for picking a base town. Platforms and rents for a month: monthly rentals in the Algarve.
For September to November in detail (lifeguard dates, the winter bus timetable from 1 November, autumn events and what stays open for kids), see the Algarve in autumn.
The Algarve in winter
Winter on the south coast is mild by northern European standards: Faro’s January average is 16.3 °C by day and 8.3 °C at night, frost practically never happens (zero frost days in the 30-year normal), and there are about 6 rain days a month [1]. It is the quietest time: 543,800 guest nights in January 2026 against 3.2 million in August 2025 [4][5].
What it is good for: coastal walks, quieter towns, long stays. What it is not good for: swimming (the December–February sea averages are 15.8–17.6 °C [8]) or a guaranteed sunny week. Before booking a winter rental, ask what heating it has.
Getting there in each season
Flight schedules into Faro are fuller in summer than in winter; our flights to Faro guide covers which routes fly year-round. From the airport, Faro airport to Lagos and Sagres compares car, transfer, bus and train.

Quick answers
What is the best month to visit the Algarve?
On the numbers, June and September. At Faro the average daily high is 26.8 °C in June and 26.4 °C in September, with under two rain days a month (IPMA normals 1991–2020), and the sea is 20–22 °C. September also falls after August, when the region is at its busiest (INE).
What is the weather like in the Algarve in October?
Still warm by day and the sea is still among the warmest of the year: Faro averages a high of 23.3 °C and a low of 15.8 °C, with about 6 rain days of 1 mm or more (IPMA 1991–2020). Average sea temperature off Faro is about 21.0 °C (NOAA OISST, 2001–2020). It is the month when autumn rain usually returns, so plan for a few wet days.
Is the Algarve worth visiting in winter?
For walking, working and quiet towns, yes; for swimming, not really. Faro's average high in January is 16.3 °C with a low of 8.3 °C and about 6 rain days (IPMA). Tourist accommodation recorded 543,800 guest nights in the Algarve in January 2026 against 3.23 million in August 2025 (INE), so expect far fewer people and some seasonal closures.
When is the sea warmest in the Algarve?
The offshore Faro point averages 21.5 °C in August, 21.6 °C in September and 21.0 °C in October (NOAA OISST, 2001–2020). Daily temperatures at individual beaches can differ.
When is the Algarve busiest?
July and August. In August 2025 the Algarve's tourist accommodation recorded 3.23 million guest nights, 30.3% of the Portugal total, at an average room rate of €217.80, the highest of any region (INE). Portuguese residents account for over a third of those nights, so it is busy with domestic holidaymakers as well as foreign visitors.
Is it windy in the Algarve?
The west coast (Sagres, Aljezur) is cooler in summer than the south coast: Sagres averages a 25.9 °C high in August against Faro's 29.2 °C (IPMA 1991–2020). Neither IPMA normal publishes wind, so we do not give wind figures here [1][2].
