Original research: 1 October 2026. Bus checks: 12 October 2026, for the dates specified below. Transport pages rot fastest of all, so every figure that is given below has a source and a date; unverified figures, such as the Lagos–Sagres bus fare, taxi prices and car hire rates, are identified as such. Driving times are routing-model estimates without traffic, not measured journeys. The Lagos and Sagres airport routes were recalculated on 11 October 2026 from the same access-road point by the terminal [1][2].

Which airport

Faro (FAO) is the Algarve’s airport, on the eastern side of the region [8]. The city is about 4 km in a straight line and 7–8 km by road from the airport, depending on the address [22][23]. From the airport it is about 86 km to Lagos and 119 km to Sagres; OpenStreetMap routing estimates 1 h 06 and 1 h 33 of driving without stops or traffic [1][2]. Flights from the UK are the airport’s core business: its busiest routes in 2024 were British ones, served by easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair, TUI, British Airways and Wizz Air [8].

Lisbon is the alternative when Faro fares are high. Lisbon airport to Lagos is about 294 km and 3 h 15 by road in the same model [4]; one Lagos operator quotes private transfers from Lisbon from €350 for up to four people [12]. For Sagres it is further still. Unless the fare difference is large, Faro wins on time. Staying in Albufeira, Vilamoura or Quarteira instead? See Faro airport to Albufeira and Vilamoura. For Portimão, Carvoeiro, Ferragudo or Alvor, see Faro airport to Portimão and Carvoeiro.

The options at a glance

Times cover the main leg only. None of them includes waiting, the walk at either end or the last stretch to your accommodation.

Option Main-leg time (estimate) Price and check date Notes
Hire car ~1 h 06 driving to Lagos, model estimate [1], plus the hire desk Not verified; rates vary by season and company A22 toll-free since 2025 [9]
Private transfer 60–75 min to Lagos, operator’s own estimate, traffic-dependent [12] From €85 for up to 4; minivan (up to 8) from €120; starting prices per vehicle, one operator [12] Pre-booked, meets you in arrivals
Train Airport bus or taxi to Faro station (about 6 km by road) [24], then Regional 90–108 min or InterRegional 77 min direct to Lagos [5] Regional single Faro–Lagos €8.30; InterRegional €9.15 [6]; airport bus fare not verified Roughly two-hourly from Faro
Aerobus (Vamus line 56) 115–120 min to Lagos bus station [26] Airport–Lagos ticket €17, operator tariff effective 1 Jan 2026; check current fare [29] 7 daily departures in the checked October dates, 2 in the checked November dates; full dates and return direction below [26][28]
Coach (FlixBus) Route page advertises a minimum 1 h 30 from Faro city, 1 h 45 from the airport [30][31] City route advertised from €3.48 online; date-specific fare must be checked [30] City: Alfândega. Airport: Parque 5. Route-page snapshots checked 12 Oct 2026, not a timetable for every day [30][31]
Taxi / Bolt / Uber ~1 h 06, model estimate [1] Not verified Bolt operates in Faro [14]; Uber publishes an FAO pickup page [17]

Hire car and the A22

Most of the route is the A22 (Via do Infante), which runs the length of the Algarve and passes close to the airport [8].

The A22 has been toll-free since 1 January 2025. Lei n.º 37/2024 abolished tolls from the start of 2025 on the former free-flow motorways of the interior and of regions without a good alternative road: the A22, A23, A24 and A25, and stretches of the A4, A13 and A28 [9]. The A22 had been tolled since 2011 [10], and the official Portugal Tolls site no longer lists it among its toll roads [11]. Guides written before 2025 may still tell you to sort out an A22 toll device at the hire desk; that advice is out of date.

Tolls elsewhere still apply. Much of the rest of the motorway network, including the route down from Lisbon, is tolled, and several roads use electronic-only gantries with no booths [11]. A hire car is Portuguese-registered, so the hire company’s arrangement applies; ask at the desk and get any device charge in writing. For a foreign-registered car, the official options are EasyToll (a bank card tied to the number plate, valid 30 days), TollCard (prepaid, valid a year) or a Via Verde subscription, each with a €0.32 administrative fee per trip; the official site has the details and registration costs [11].

Private transfer

A pre-booked car with a driver waiting in arrivals avoids a separate journey to Faro station when choosing the train. One Lagos-based operator publishes 2026 prices: from €85 for up to four passengers to Lagos, with luggage and child seats included in the price, and from €120 for a minivan of up to eight, both depending on season; it offers flight tracking and 60 minutes’ free waiting after landing, and quotes 60–75 minutes depending on traffic [12]. These are two starting prices for two vehicle sizes from one operator, quoted per vehicle, not a market range; exact drop-off, cancellation terms and payment were not checked, and other operators were not compared.

Train: direct from Faro, new timetable since July 2026

Regional trains run direct from Faro to Lagos [5]. What changed on 19 July 2026: with the electrification of the Linha do Algarve complete, CP now runs electric trains through from Vila Real de Santo António to Lagos without a change in Faro, and has added Regional services at peak times [7]. If a guide tells you to change trains at Faro or Tunes, it predates that timetable.

  • Getting to the station. The airport has no rail link; Faro railway station is about 6 km by road from the airport, next to the city bus station [24]. Próximo line 16 runs daily from the airport to the bus station, with gaps of 20–75 minutes on working days and 25–80 minutes on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays outside its 1 July–13 September summer period. Airport departures run from 05:20 to 00:10 and take 15–19 minutes [20]; line 14 also runs from the airport to the terminal: outside its 1 July–13 September summer period, three departures on working days (07:46, 12:36, 18:36), but only 18:36 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays [25]. Fares were not verified for this page.
  • Times. From Faro, trains to Lagos leave roughly every two hours between 06:34 and 20:40 (06:34, 08:36, 10:36, 12:36, 14:36, 16:36, 17:47, 18:36, 19:36, 20:40 in the timetable valid from 19 July 2026). The Regional takes 90–108 minutes, the InterRegional (10:36 → 11:53) 1 h 17, and the last train 1 h 48 [5]. Two of these do not run every day: the 06:34 runs Monday to Saturday (not on Sundays or public holidays) and the 18:36 Monday to Friday only (not on public holidays); the others run daily, so on a Sunday there are eight [5].
  • Fares. A Regional single Faro–Lagos is €8.30 (InterRegional €9.15); these are adult single fares, and monthly passes exist [6]. Check CP before travel.
  • At Lagos. The enthusiast timetable site algarvebus.info describes the station as a five-minute walk from the bus station across the footbridge over the river by the marina. This is its estimate, not a measured time; the lifting bridge occasionally opens [13].

Bus and coach

Two different things, often confused:

  • The airport bus to Lagos. Vamus line 56, branded Aerobus, links the airport and Lagos bus station. The regulator lists the service [16]. We checked every day of 12–18 October, 26 October–1 November and 2–8 November 2026 in the TRENMO-published GTFS, version 25 September 2026, against the operator’s available PDF [26][28]. The PDF is labelled valid from 9 September 2024: its annual and May–October columns must be read separately, and the late column marked 57 does not reach Lagos. The airport–Lagos ticket is €17 in the operator’s tariff effective 1 January 2026; check the current price before travel [29].

Saturday 06:00 from Lagos is unresolved: GTFS includes it, but the operator PDF’s Saturday block labels that column as a working day. Confirm it with Vamus before relying on it. The return counts below include this disputed departure on 17 and 31 October and 7 November [26][28].

Checked dates in 2026 Airport → Lagos departures Lagos → airport departures (Saturday caveat above) Largest departure gap, outward / return
12–18 and 26–31 October 7 daily: 08:30, 09:30, 11:15, 12:30, 14:30, 16:00, 18:15 7 daily: 06:00, 07:30, 11:30, 13:00, 14:30, 16:45, 17:45 2 h 15 / 4 h
1–8 November 2 daily: 11:15, 18:15 2 daily: 06:00, 14:30 7 h / 8 h 30

These are scheduled departures from Aeroporto Faro, not Faro city centre, and Lagos (Terminal Rodoviário) [26]. Outward journeys take 115–120 minutes in the checked October dates and 120 minutes in November; returns take 115 minutes. The table follows GTFS, with the Saturday exception explained above [26][28]. The university stop is omitted during school holidays [28]. These checks do not confirm every date through the rest of winter.

  • Coaches from Faro city and the airport. FlixBus’s city route page advertises an online starting fare of €3.48, a minimum journey of 1 h 30, and boarding at Faro (Alfândega) [30]. Its separate airport page lists Parque 5 – Autocarros/Buses to Terminal Lagos, a minimum 1 h 45, and first/last departures of 08:35 / 14:00 [31]. These are route-page snapshots read on 12 October 2026, not confirmed availability for each day in the tables above. Check your date and euro fare in the booking system. Rede Expressos was not verified for this page.

Taxi, Uber and Bolt

Bolt lists Faro among the cities where its rides are available [14], and Uber publishes a Faro Airport pickup page, which shows the service operates at the airport but says nothing about whether a driver will accept a trip to Lagos or at what price [17]. No taxi tariff for the airport–Lagos run was found in a source worth citing; the only price on this page for a driven car is the pre-booked transfer above.

On to Sagres

Sagres is 33 km and about 36 minutes west of Lagos by road in the routing model [3], and it is where the public-transport options thin out: there is no railway, and the nearest airport is Faro at about 119 km by road [2].

  • By bus. Vamus 47 serves Lagos–Sagres, with only selected trips continuing to Cabo de São Vicente [26][27]. For an exact common reference point, the table below uses Sagres (Porto da Baleeira), the stop printed in the operator PDF. The tourist-office stop, Sagres (Posto Turismo), is closer to the fortress according to algarvebus.info; it has different passing times [13]. We have not verified the fare for Lagos–Sagres from a stop-to-stop operator tariff: check the current fare.
Checked dates in 2026 Lagos → Sagres (Porto da Baleeira) Sagres (Porto da Baleeira) → Lagos Largest departure gap, outward / return
Mon–Fri in weeks starting 12 Oct, 26 Oct and 2 Nov, school days in the feed 9 departures, 06:50–19:20; about 55–80 min 9 departures, 06:50–18:30; about 65–105 min 2 h 30 / 2 h 30
17, 18 and 31 October 5 departures, 07:00–17:15; 50–65 min 5 departures, 07:50–18:30; 65–85 min 3 h / 4 h 05
1, 7 and 8 November 4 departures, 07:00–17:15; 50–65 min 4 departures, 07:50–18:30; 65–85 min 4 h 45 / 4 h 35

The school-day and school-holiday columns are alternatives, not extra departures to add together. The 06:45 school bus from Lagos ends at Vila do Bispo and is not a tenth bus to Sagres. The October weekend 15:15 from Lagos and 17:00 from Sagres are absent on the checked November weekends [26][27]. The operator PDF is labelled valid from 9 September 2024; the dated counts above are corroborated by the newer feed, not a promise for the whole winter.

Connecting at Lagos needs planning in both directions. On all checked dates the 18:15 Aerobus reaches Lagos at 20:15, after the last 47 to Sagres. On the checked October weekends the 16:00 Aerobus also arrives after the last 47. On 1, 7 and 8 November the 11:15 airport bus arrives at 13:15, with the next 47 at 17:15: a four-hour scheduled wait [26]. In the reverse direction, the last 47 reaches Lagos at 19:35, after the last Aerobus to the airport on every checked day. On checked October working days, 47’s scheduled 11:25 arrival and 56’s 11:30 departure leave only about five minutes; we do not recommend treating that as a reliable connection. Timetable subtraction does not allow for late running, finding the departure bay or boarding. Check both legs before booking a flight. See Sagres without a car.

Using the train and Próximo 16 instead: Faro bus and railway stations require a walk between them. Airport-to-terminal times above do not include that walk or boarding a train. In the other direction, line 16 leaves Faro bus terminal from 05:00 to 23:45, taking 17–20 minutes to the airport outside the summer period; gaps are 15–70 minutes on working days and 25–85 minutes on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays [20]. Neither this timetable nor the Lagos footbridge estimate is a guaranteed connection or an allowance for airport check-in.

  • By car. The option with the fewest constraints.
  • Transfer. The operator cited above lists Sagres day tours from Lagos rather than airport transfers; a direct airport–Sagres transfer price was not found [12].

Quick answers

How far is Lagos from Faro airport?

About 86 km by road, mostly on the A22 motorway. OpenStreetMap routing estimates roughly 1 hour 6 minutes of driving without stops or traffic (a model figure, October 2026). Allow more for collecting a hire car and for August traffic.

How do I get from Faro airport to Lagos without a car?

Three documented options. Train: Próximo airport bus 16 (daily, 05:20 to 00:10 from the airport) to Faro bus station, walk to the railway station next to it, then a Regional train direct to Lagos (90–108 minutes, €8.30 adult single), or the daily InterRegional (about 77 minutes, €9.15 adult single), per CP timetable and fares from 19 July 2026; check before travel. Bus: Vamus Aerobus 56 takes 115–120 minutes to Lagos. The TRENMO timetable feed checked on 12 October 2026 has seven daily airport departures on 12–18 and 26–31 October (08:30–18:15), and two daily on 1–8 November (11:15 and 18:15). The operator's 2026 tariff lists €17 for the airport–Lagos ticket; check the current fare and your travel date before booking. These sampled weeks do not establish the whole winter timetable; FlixBus lists city and airport routes, but check date-specific departures and fares. Its route-page snapshots are not a daily timetable. Transfer: a pre-booked private car, from €85 for up to four people with one Lagos operator.

Is there a direct train from Faro to Lagos?

Yes. Regional trains run direct from Faro to Lagos in 90–108 minutes (€8.30 adult single), or about 77 minutes on the daily InterRegional (€9.15 adult single) (CP timetable and fares valid from 19 July 2026). What changed on 19 July 2026 is the timetable: with the electrification of the Linha do Algarve complete, trains now run through from Vila Real de Santo António to Lagos without a change in Faro, and there are more Regional services at peak times.

How much is a private transfer from Faro airport to Lagos?

One Lagos-based operator lists private transfers from €85 for up to four passengers at 2026 prices and from €120 for a minivan of up to eight, both season-dependent starting prices for a vehicle, not per person; it quotes 60–75 minutes depending on traffic. Other operators were not checked for this page.

Do I pay tolls on the A22 with a hire car?

Not any more. Tolls on the A22 (Via do Infante) were abolished from 1 January 2025 under Lei n.º 37/2024, which also removed them on the A23, A24, A25 and stretches of the A4, A13 and A28. Guides written before 2025 may still describe the A22's electronic tolls. Tolls still apply on much of the rest of Portugal's motorway network, including the route down from Lisbon, where a hire car's transponder or the official options for foreign-registered cars (EasyToll, TollCard) come into play.

What is the nearest airport to Sagres?

Faro, about 119 km and 1 h 33 by road (model estimate). Sagres has no railway; from Lagos Vamus 47 serves Sagres daily in the three checked weeks starting 12 October, 26 October and 2 November 2026; only selected trips continue to Cabo de São Vicente. Check the current fare and timetable. The drive from Lagos is 33 km and about 36 minutes in the routing model.
