Bus data re-read on 12 October 2026. We checked every day in 12–18 October, 26 October–1 November and 2–8 November against published timetables. This is not confirmation of actual operation or the whole winter. Check the operator before travelling [15][16][17].

The short answer

You can reach Sagres without a car, but allow time for connections. One route is train or coach to Lagos, then Vamus 47 to Sagres. In the dates checked, Lagos bus terminal to Porto da Baleeira takes about 50–80 minutes, and the return about 65–105 minutes, depending on the departure. Check the current bus fare [15][16]. For Lisbon, check date-specific coach options before planning around a direct service.

Living in Sagres without a car works if you stay near the centre. The town beaches and a supermarket are walkable [8]. The west-coast beaches, most surf spots and the Lidl near Vila do Bispo are not. For a week of beach-and-work, car-free is fine. For a month with children, we would look hard at a car or at least a bike.

Faro airport to Sagres, step by step

For the airport and Lagos legs, see our Faro airport to Lagos and Sagres guide.

  1. Airport to Faro station. Take Próximo 16 to Faro bus terminal, then walk to the railway station. Outside the PDF’s summer period (1 July–13 September), airport departures towards the terminal run from 05:20 to 00:10 the following day. Gaps are 20–75 minutes on working days and 25–80 minutes on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The ride takes 15–19 minutes. In the other direction, terminal departures are 05:00–23:45, taking 17–20 minutes; gaps are 15–70 minutes on working days and 25–85 minutes on weekends and holidays [17]. The table below separates the directions. A taxi is a fallback.
  2. Faro to Lagos. Take the regional train from Faro station, direct to Lagos since the July 2026 timetable. Faro to Lagos takes 90–108 minutes on Regional (€8.30 adult single) or 77 minutes on InterRegional (€9.15 adult single) [13][14]. These are different train categories; check the service and current fare before you go. The CP timetable is valid from 19 July 2026, re-read on 11 October 2026. For coach alternatives and the airport bus to Lagos, use the Faro guide above.
  3. Lagos to Sagres. Transfer from Lagos railway station to the bus terminal and take Vamus 47. Allow walking and boarding time rather than assuming a guaranteed connection. Services pass Vila do Bispo; only selected journeys enter Salema village. Sagres has several stops, including Posto Turismo and Porto da Baleeira [15][16].

We would allow at least half a day door to door. Check each connection separately: the last bus out of Lagos in the dates checked is 19:20 on working days and 17:15 at weekends. A late flight may require a night in Lagos or a taxi [15][16].

These figures come from the complete Próximo PDF, valid from 18 August 2026, re-read on 12 October. Its V8 columns apply only from 1 July to 13 September and are excluded here; public holidays use the Sunday table. The 00:10 departure belongs to the previous operating day’s row [17].

Vamus 47: how often, and when it stops

Line 47 is Vamus Algarve’s Cabo S. Vicente–Lagos route via Sagres. We compared the operator PDF (labelled valid from 9 September 2024) with the TRENMO-published GTFS, version 25 September 2026 [15][16]. The table uses Porto da Baleeira, the Sagres stop named in that PDF, in both directions.

Dates checked Lagos terminal → Porto da Baleeira Porto da Baleeira → Lagos terminal
Working days: 12–16 and 26–30 Oct; 2–6 Nov 9: 06:50, 09:00, 10:00, 12:30, 13:45, 15:15, 17:15, 18:30, 19:20 9: 06:50, 07:10, 07:50, 10:10, 11:55, 13:30, 16:00, 17:00, 18:30
October weekends: 17, 18 and 31 Oct 5: 07:00, 10:00, 12:30, 15:15, 17:15 5: 07:50, 11:55, 13:55, 17:00, 18:30
November weekends/holiday: 1, 7 and 8 Nov 4: 07:00, 10:00, 12:30, 17:15 4: 07:50, 11:55, 13:55, 18:30

The PDF marks the extra weekend 15:15 from Lagos and 17:00 from Sagres 1 May–31 October. Schoolday and school-holiday columns are alternatives, not extra buses to add together. The 06:45 schoolday departure from Lagos terminates at Vila do Bispo and is not a tenth bus to Sagres [16].

Allow for long waits. On the working days checked, the largest gap is 2 h 30 each way. On October weekends it is 3 hours out of Lagos and 4 h 05 out of Sagres. On the November weekends checked, the gap before the last bus is 4 h 45 from Lagos and 4 h 35 from Sagres [15].

Journey times depend on the variant. From Lagos to Porto da Baleeira, allow 55–80 minutes on the working days checked and 50–65 minutes at weekends. Back to Lagos, allow about 65–105 minutes on those working days and 65–85 minutes at weekends. Several working-day returns detour through Barão de São Miguel and Burgau [15][16].

The last return from Porto da Baleeira is 18:30, reaching Lagos at 19:35 in all dates checked. Posto Turismo has different times and directional stops; some cape services loop through Sagres. Use the exact stop in the journey planner rather than transferring these times to another stop. Published arrival times are not a guarantee of a train connection or enough time for an evening flight [15][16].

To Cabo de São Vicente by bus

Some line 47 departures continue to Cabo de São Vicente. These are the published times at Porto da Baleeira and the cape for the dates above [15][16]:

Dates checked Porto da Baleeira → cape (departure → arrival) Cape → Porto da Baleeira (departure → arrival)
Working days: 12–16 and 26–30 Oct; 2–6 Nov 11:05 → 11:20; 15:05 → 15:20; 16:15 → 16:30 11:45 → 11:55; 15:50 → 16:00; 16:50 → 17:00
October weekends: 17, 18 and 31 Oct 11:05 → 11:20; 13:35 → 13:45; 16:09 → 16:19 11:45 → 11:55; 13:45 → 13:55; 16:50 → 17:00
1, 7 and 8 November 11:05 → 11:20; 13:35 → 13:45 11:45 → 11:55; 13:45 → 13:55

The ride is 10–15 minutes towards the cape and 10 minutes back from these stops. The Lagos 15:15 reaches the cape at 16:30 on working days but 16:19 on October weekends. The weekend afternoon cape trip is marked May–October only. Plan the return before leaving; a bus trip does not provide an evening at the cape [15][16].

The cape is about 5 km in a straight line from the centre of Sagres [8]. Walking there along the road or part of the Fishermen’s Trail is a half-day plan in itself; see our Fishermen’s Trail guide.

From Lisbon

Check Rede Expressos for your date and destination. We have not verified a current direct Lisbon–Sagres coach, its departure point, duration, fare or frequency. The older route-planner snapshot [6] is not sufficient to plan this journey. You can also investigate a journey via Lagos and the onward 47; allow transfer time and check both legs.

Living in Sagres without a car

What you can walk to. Straight-line distances from Praça da República, the main square [8]. Walking routes are longer, and we have not walked them:

Place Distance On foot
Praia da Mareta 0.2 km Yes, it is the town beach
Praia do Tonel 0.5 km Yes
Intermarché (EN 268) 0.9 km Yes, with bags it is a trek
Praia do Martinhal 1.9 km Probably, but the route is longer than the line
Praia do Beliche 2.9 km Along the cape road; steep steps down
Cabo de São Vicente 5.2 km Half day; or the bus
Lidl, Vila do Bispo 8.8 km No, bus or car
Praia do Castelejo / Cordoama 10–11 km No, car or surf-school transport
Praia do Amado 18 km No

Shopping. OpenStreetMap lists an Intermarché on the EN 268 at the northern edge of town and a SPAR on Rua Comandante Matoso [8]. Opening hours were not checked for this page. The nearest Lidl is near Vila do Bispo, which is on the 47 bus route [8][16].

Surf without a car. Several schools collect students. Pure Surf, based in Raposeira, includes transfers in its lesson packs and teaches at Amado and Castelejo [10]. For most visitors without a car, that is the only practical way to surf the west coast. See our Sagres surfing guide.

Bikes. Maretta Shop on Av. Comandante Matoso rents adult bikes for €20 a day and kids’ bikes for €10–20, on a 24-hour basis, along with scooters and surfboards [9]. A bike gets you to Martinhal, Beliche and the cape. The roads out to the west coast are a different matter, given the distance and, in our research, the wind.

Taxis and ride-hailing. Bolt operates in Faro [11]. We could not confirm that Bolt or Uber cover Sagres, so do not plan a late-night return around an app. Ask your accommodation for a local taxi number.

What we’d do

For a week in Sagres for work and beaches, we would stay within walking distance of Mareta and the main square, take the train to Lagos and the 47 bus, and use a surf school with transport for the west coast. For two weeks or more, or with small children, we would hire a car for at least part of the stay. Most of what makes the area special, including the west-coast beaches, Bordeira and the Aljezur side, is out of reach without one [1][8].
