Sagres vs Lagoswhich Algarve base suits nomads, workations and families
Lagos is a municipality of 33,000 built around a real town, with a train station, a 24-hour emergency unit and paid coworking; Sagres is a village of 1,900 at the end of the road, with surf on two coasts and very little else. How to choose, side by side, with sources.

Short answer: pick Lagos if you want things to work without planning – a train to Faro, a 24-hour emergency unit, a coworking space with day prices, dozens of cafés and restaurants. Pick Sagres if surf and space matter more than choice, and you are fine driving 10–15 minutes for a quieter beach. Many people do both: a base in Lagos with days out to Sagres, or a few weeks in Sagres after Lagos.
The two are 33 km apart, about 35 minutes by car in a routing estimate [3], so this is not a choice between regions. It is a choice between a working town and a village at the end of the road.
Side by side
| Compared | Lagos | Sagres |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Municipality of 33,494 (2021) [2] | Village of 1,894 (2021) [1] |
| Getting there | Railway station, direct trains from Faro [5] | No railway; bus 47 from Lagos Terminal to Posto Turismo, about 49–78 min across the checked dates below [20] |
| Coworking | Nest Coworking, €16/day [8] | OFF THE HOOK office €10/day (2023 price) [9]; Sagres Sun Stay desk, price not published [10] |
| Summer highs | July 27.3 °C, August 28.1 °C (modelled) [7] | July 25.2 °C, August 25.9 °C (station normals) [6] |
| Rent | 1-bed flat in the centre ~€1,040/month, crowd-sourced [11] | No published figure found |
| Health care | 24-hour basic emergency unit [13] | Health post open weekday daytime only [12]; nearest 24-hour unit is in Lagos [13] |
| Blue Flag beaches 2026 | Several (see the Lagos beaches guide) | Mareta, Tonel, Martinhal [14] |
The climate rows come from two different datasets – station normals for Sagres, modelled data for Lagos – so the 2 °C gap is an indication rather than a measurement [6][7].
For remote work
Lagos is the safer bet for work. It has a dedicated coworking space with published prices [8] and a much larger café scene, so if one place is full or loud there is another. Sagres has two places that advertise desks: the OFF THE HOOK coliving office, whose €10 day price dates from a 2023 page [9], and a cowork room at Sagres Sun Stay with no published price [10]. That is enough for a focused stay, not for choice.
Neither town has a measured internet speed we would trust – see our guide to working remotely in Sagres for what we found and what to test on arrival.
For families
Lagos has more to do on a bad-weather day; Sagres has the calmer family beach and the bigger resort. Lagos has a zoo with seasonal hours [17], a science centre and a rope park (details on the Lagos page). In Sagres, Praia do Martinhal is the beach sources describe as calm, shallow and popular with families, though constantly windy [15]. The Martinhal resort behind it runs kids’ clubs all year and has heated pools [16] – useful if you want childcare on site, and a fixed cost to weigh.
Health care decides more than it seems with small children. Sagres has a health post open on weekdays only, partly in the afternoon [12]; the nearest 24-hour emergency unit is in Lagos [13]. In an emergency in Portugal, call 112.
For surf
Sagres wins. It sits on a corner where the south coast and the west coast meet, so when one side is too big or blown out, the other often works. Surf guides describe summer as the smallest-swell season at Beliche and winter as a season for experienced surfers [18]. Lagos has surf at Meia Praia and Porto de Mós, but the classic west-coast breaks are a drive away from Lagos and a short hop from Sagres. Our Sagres surfing guide covers beaches by season and level.
Getting around without a car
Lagos, clearly. The train connects it straight to Faro [5], and most of daily life is walkable from the old town. Bus 47 connects Lagos Terminal Rodoviário and Sagres Posto Turismo. The TRENMO feed (version 25 September 2026), checked on 12 October, gives the following in both directions, with journey durations rounded to the nearest minute [20]. These are the three checked weeks, not a promise for every school holiday or the whole winter.
| Dates checked | Departures each way per day | Lagos → Posto Turismo | Posto Turismo → Lagos |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12–16 and 26–30 October; 2–6 November (schooldays) | 9 | about 53–78 min | about 63–103 min |
| 17–18 and 31 October | 5 | about 49–64 min | about 63–83 min |
| 1, 7 and 8 November | 4 | about 49–64 min | about 63–83 min |
The longest gap grows from 3 hours out / 4 h 05 back on the checked October weekends to 4 h 45 out / 4 h 35 back on 1, 7 and 8 November. The feed marks Posto Turismo times as approximate. For a Lagos-based day trip, it lists the last return from Posto Turismo at 18:31:40, reaching Lagos at 19:35, on all checked days. That is about 18:32 when rounded; the secondary transcription also gives 18:32 [4]. This is not proof of a one-minute timetable disagreement. The feed is published by TRENMO, not directly by Vamus.
The operator’s route 47 PDF, marked valid from 9 September 2024 and checked on 12 October 2026, supports the counts and seasonal codes above at Porto da Baleeira, where it gives the last departure as 18:30 [21]. It does not list Posto Turismo, so it cannot independently confirm that stop’s exact minute. Confirm the stop and departure with Vamus and arrive early.
The Intermarché sits at the northern edge of Sagres. For the west-coast beaches, plan transport separately; our Sagres without a car guide covers the options.
Who should pick which
- Pick Lagos if this is your first time in the Algarve, if you will be without a car, if you need a coworking desk every day, or if you have a baby or toddler and want a 24-hour emergency unit nearby.
- Pick Sagres if you surf or want to learn, if you prefer quiet to nightlife, if summer heat bothers you, or if you work best with few distractions and can drive.
- Do both if you have a month: Lagos for the first week to settle in, Sagres for the rest.

Quick answers
Is Sagres or Lagos better for a first trip to the Algarve?
Lagos, for most people. It has a railway station with direct trains to Faro, a 24-hour basic emergency unit, a coworking space with published day prices and far more places to eat. Sagres suits people who want surf and quiet over choice.
How far is Sagres from Lagos?
About 33 km by road, roughly 35 minutes of driving in an OpenStreetMap routing estimate without traffic. For Lagos Terminal Rodoviário to Sagres Posto Turismo, the TRENMO timetable feed gives approximately 49–78 minutes out and 63–103 minutes back across the dates checked in October and early November 2026. There are nine each way on the checked schooldays, five on October weekends and four on 1, 7 and 8 November. Check Vamus before travel.
Is Sagres cooler than Lagos in summer?
Yes, on the figures we could find. IPMA station normals for Sagres give a mean daily high of 25.2 °C in July and 25.9 °C in August; modelled data for Lagos give 27.3 °C and 28.1 °C. The two datasets use different methods, so treat the gap as an indication, not a measurement.
Can you live in Sagres without a car?
It is harder than in Lagos. Sagres has no railway, the bus to Lagos runs a handful of times a day, and the supermarket on the edge of the village and the west-coast surf beaches are beyond an easy walk. Lagos has the train and most daily needs within walking distance of the centre.
