Surfing in Sagres, Portugalseasons, beaches by level and surf schools
Why Sagres works for surfing most of the year (one coast faces south, one west), which beaches suit beginners and which are for experienced surfers, the season-by-season picture, lesson prices from the schools' own sites, water temperature and wetsuits, and children's minimum ages.

Checked on 4 October 2026. Spot descriptions come from two surf-guide sources and a local surf camp; prices come from the schools’ own websites. We have not surfed these spots for this page.
The short answer
Sagres sits on a corner where two coastlines meet. Beaches on the south side (Mareta, Beliche, Zavial) face south and are sheltered from the north wind. Beaches on the west side (Tonel, Castelejo, Cordoama, Amado) face the open Atlantic [2][3]. When one side is too big or blown out, the other side is often surfable. That is why schools here describe the area as surfable all year [4][6].
- Beginners: Mareta and Martinhal on the south side, Amado and Arrifana on the west when the swell is small [1][2].
- Experienced surfers: Tonel, Zavial and Beliche, and the west coast in autumn and winter [1][2].
- Best season: autumn for consistency, summer for learning, winter for experienced surfers only [1].
- Lessons: in Sagres itself, a 2-hour group lesson with equipment starts at €65 at Algarve Surf School [4]; Arrifana Surf School, 45 minutes north near Aljezur, charges €55 (on sale at €45) [5]. Packs bring the daily price down [9].
Which side works when
The rule of thumb from local schools is simple: big swell from the west or north-west → go south; swell from the south → go west [2].
| Conditions | Where it usually works | Source |
|---|---|---|
| W/NW/N swell over ~2 m | South coast: biggest at Tonel, then Zavial, Beliche, Mareta | [2] |
| Small–medium south swell (up to ~1.5 m) | Mareta “can be really perfect” | [2] |
| Big south swell (2 m+) | The whole west coast, “especially for beginners” | [2] |
| Small–medium summer swell (under 1–1.5 m) | West coast, “fun for every surfer” | [2] |
| North wind | South-facing beaches (Beliche, Mareta, Zavial) | [1][3] |
| East wind | West-facing beaches (Tonel, Castelejo, Cordoama, Amado) | [1][3] |
Tonel is the odd one: it sits in Sagres but faces west [3]. In a big north-west swell Sagres Natura lists it as the biggest of the south-coast group [2].
Beaches by level
For beginners
- Praia da Mareta. The town beach. Surf Atlas names it a mellow beach break for beginners [1], and Sagres Natura says it can be perfect in small to medium south swell [2]. Algarve Surf School teaches here [4].
- Praia do Martinhal. “The most protected” beach, “really tame to get going” [1].
- Praia do Amado. The best-known teaching beach on the west coast. The official bathing-water profile calls it “famous for its waves” [12]. Algarve Surf School and Pure Surf both teach here [4][6].
- Praia do Zavial, only when it is small: “perfect for beginners” under about 1.5 m, heavy, fast and hollow above that [2].
For intermediate and experienced surfers
- Praia do Tonel. “Barreling lefts and wedgy rights” by the rock stack, according to Surf Atlas [1].
- Praia do Zavial and Praia do Beliche. “Punchy and fast rides” [1]. Surf Atlas also notes that Zavial is known for localism [1], so read the line-up before you paddle out.
- Praia do Castelejo and Praia da Cordoama. Big west-coast beach breaks. Cordoama is “very rarely busy” [1]. Pure Surf teaches at Castelejo when conditions allow [6].
Season by season
| Season | What to expect | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | Smallest, calmest swells; west coast more reliable than the flat south [1] | Beginners, families |
| Autumn (Sep–Nov) | “Peak season”: consistent waves, warm water. Surf Atlas’s author counted “just one unsurfable day” in a month of Oct–Nov [1] | Everyone, best overall |
| Winter (Dec–Mar) | “Particularly heavy”, big closeouts; good groundswell on smaller days [1] | Experienced surfers |
| Spring (Apr–May) | Mixed; 3/2 or 4/3 wetsuit [1] | Beginners to intermediate |
Lifeguards are on the beaches only from 1 June to 30 September in 2026 [11]. Outside that window, surf with a school or someone who knows the spot.

Sea: NOAA OISST v2.1 offshore surface temperatures, 2001–2020, calculated and checked on 11 October 2026 (Sagres 36.875° N, 9.125° W [14]). We average daily values within each month and year, then give each of the 20 annual monthly means equal weight. These 0.25° grid cells are coastal proxies, not measurements at individual beaches or a forecast.
Monthly averages from NOAA OISST offshore from Sagres [14]. They are not measurements at a specific beach, and the west coast is often described as colder. Surf Atlas recommends a 3/2 or 4/3 in spring and a thick wetsuit plus boots in winter [1]. Every school we checked includes the wetsuit in the lesson price [4][6].
Surf schools and what lessons cost

| Arrifana Surf School | Arrifana (Aljezur) | 2 h €55 (on sale at €45), 3 h €65 | Private (up to 2, 2 h) €220 May–Oct, €180 Nov–Apr; shop lists a 3-person private at €260 (sale €220) [5] |

| Sagres Sun Stay | Sagres | Not published | Kids 6–14, max 4 per instructor [8] |
A marketplace listing puts group lessons in Sagres from €70 for a 3-hour day [9]. Schools usually choose the beach each morning according to the conditions [4][6], so you do not need to pick a beach yourself. If you have no car, ask whether transport is included; Pure Surf includes it [6].
Renting without a lesson. Maretta Shop in Sagres lists surfboards at €25–35 a day, wetsuits at €12 and bodyboards at €15, on a 24-hour rental [13].
Surfing with children
Several schools take children from age 6. Algarve Surf School runs 1.5-hour lessons for 6–12-year-olds [4], and Sagres Sun Stay’s children’s lessons are for 6–14-year-olds with no more than four children per instructor [8]. For a first session, the south-side beaches (Mareta, Martinhal) are the ones the guides call gentle [1]. Book them in summer, when lifeguards are on duty [11].
Planning a surf week from Sagres
- Where to stay. If you have no car, stay close to the centre: Mareta and Tonel are a few minutes’ walk away [3]. Use a school with transport for Amado and Castelejo [6]. Our Sagres without a car guide has the walking distances and bus times.
- When to book. Lessons run all year at the schools we checked [4][6]. In summer, when the beaches are busiest, book group lessons before you arrive.
- Weather. Air temperatures, rain days and sea temperature by month are in our Sagres weather guide.
- Lifeguards. In the 2026 season, the bathing season with lifeguards on the surf beaches on this page ran from 1 June to 30 September [11]; outside it, assume no one is watching.

Travel insurance for long stays
A European health card (EHIC, or the UK’s GHIC) covers state healthcare, not everything. For a long stay, check whether a policy covers you for the whole trip, pre-existing conditions, and sports like surfing. We don’t sell or recommend specific policies.
What we’d do
As beginners, we would book a three-day group package with a school that picks the beach daily, so we learn on the right side of the cape each morning [2][4][6]. As intermediates visiting in autumn, we would check swell size, wind and tide each evening against the beach notes above, not a single rule – and on doubtful days follow the school’s pick [1][2]. And we would go easy on Zavial’s regulars [1].

Zavial can be perfect for beginners under about 1.5 m and becomes heavy above it (thesurfatlas.com, updated 10 Oct 2025; sagresnatura.com).
What is the best time of year to surf in Sagres?
Autumn (September to November) for consistent waves, summer for beginners, and winter for experienced surfers only. Surf Atlas describes autumn as peak season and winter as heavy, with big closeouts (thesurfatlas.com, updated 10 Oct 2025).
