Beach in Sagres
Big west-coast beach under dark cliffs west of Vila do Bispo: surf schools in summer, powerful waves in winter, rock pools at low tide. Lifeguard and Blue Flag 2026; strong currents.
Rock pools with calm water at low tide that children like; the open sea has strong currents and hidden rocks (algarvetips.com, Feb 2026). Lifeguard in season. Research, not first-hand.
Castelejo is the first big west-coast beach north of Sagres: a wide stretch of sand under high, dark cliffs, reached from Vila do Bispo, and open to the full Atlantic. APA calls it “good for surfing and bodyboarding” [3]; guiadepraias.pt calls it one of the windiest and most exposed beaches in Portugal [5].
Surf. Surf schools bring students here, especially in summer when the waves are smaller. In winter the waves are usually too powerful for beginners [4]. There are rocks under the water that are not always visible, which is the main reason to go with a school the first time [4].
With kids. The open sea is not for paddling: currents can be strong and the water is cold [4]. What children do get is the rock pools at low tide toward the Pedra da Laje rock at the north end, where the water is calm enough to look for crabs and small fish [4]. It is a lifeguarded bathing beach for 1 June–30 September 2026 [1] and holds a 2026 Blue Flag [2]. The APA registry lists parking and a restaurant [5].
Getting there. Drive to Vila do Bispo and follow the signs west on the M1265; the last part of the road is narrow and winding [4]. At low tide you can walk north along the sand to Praia da Cordoama [4]. The Torre de Aspa viewpoint is nearby [6].
Note: the 2026 Portaria also lists Castelejo as a “praia de uso limitado” (limited-use beach) without giving a reason [1].
Check before you go: tide times if you plan the walk to Cordoama; restaurant hours off-season.
Further afield: Praia da Ponta Ruiva (4 km), Praia da Ingrina (8 km), Praia do Beliche (8 km), Praia do Zavial (9 km), Praia do Martinhal (9 km), Praia da Baleeira (10 km), Praia do Tonel (10 km), Praia da Mareta (11 km). Straight-line distances from the centre point, not driving times.
