Beach in Sagres
Remote west-coast surf beach north of Cabo de São Vicente, reached by dirt tracks: no facilities, no lifeguard, strong currents. For experienced surfers and sunset, not for a family beach day.
No facilities, dirt-road access, strong currents and big waves; swimming 'not recommended for most visitors' (algarvetips.com, Feb 2026). Research, not first-hand.
Ponta Ruiva is the beach for people who want to get away from everyone, and are prepared to drive a dirt track to do it. It is a small, isolated west-coast beach north of Cabo de São Vicente, named after the red cliff at its southern end [1].
Getting there. It is not clearly signposted and is reached only on unpaved roads. AlgarveTips describes the route from Sagres: take the road toward Cabo de São Vicente, turn right at the last exit before the cape (just after Praia do Beliche), then follow the dirt road to the beach. A 4x4 is easier, the last stretch is the roughest, and after rain the track gets worse; careful drivers in ordinary cars do manage [1].
Surf. A left-hand point break that can be very good, with rocks scattered under the surface; even experienced surfers are advised to ask locals or a school before paddling out, and beginners should come only with a school [1].
Swimming and kids. No lifeguard — Ponta Ruiva is not a designated bathing water for 2026 [2] — and AlgarveTips does not recommend swimming for most visitors because of strong currents and big waves [1]. There are no toilets, bars or shops; bring water and food. A large part of the beach disappears at high tide, while low tide uncovers rock pools [1].
Who it suits. Experienced surfers, and anyone with a car who wants a quiet sunset. Not a family beach day, and not somewhere to go without checking the tide.
Check before you go: the state of the track after rain — no official source; tide times.
