Lagos sits at a useful point on the Algarve coast: the wild west coast and Cape St Vincent are 35–45 minutes one way, the famous cliffs around Benagil about 40 minutes the other, and the hills of Monchique 45 minutes inland. With a car, every trip on this page is a day out with time to spare. Without one, Sagres works around the bus timetable below; Benagil (by boat) and Portimão are the other easy ones.

Day trips from Lagos at a glance

Salema & Burgau 14–19 km, 17–22 min Vamus 47 to Salema; Burgau (Praia) on checked schooldays only Yes — calm beaches
Sagres & Cape St Vincent 33–39 km, 36–41 min Vamus 47: Baleeira 50–80 min; cape 64–95 min, fewer departures Yes, mind the cliffs
West coast beaches (Amado, Arrifana) 36–40 km, 43–46 min Hard Older kids, surf
Alvor boardwalk 20 km, 27 min Vamus 51 to Alvor, 27 min; dated counts below Yes — flat
Benagil & Seven Hanging Valleys 43 km, 40 min Boat from Lagos marina Boat yes; trail for walkers
Silves 40 km, 34 min Train, ~32 min Yes — castle
Monchique & Fóia 46–54 km, 43–55 min Hard Yes
Lisbon 300 km, ~3 h 20 Train ~4 h 10–4 h 35 Overnight better
Seville 276 km, ~3 h Bus ~4 h 20+ Overnight better

Car times are from the OSRM routing model without traffic, from central Lagos; summer traffic on the EN125 adds to them. Bus times below use Lagos (Terminal Rodoviário).

West: Salema, Burgau and the edge of the national park

The closest trip is along the coast west. Salema, 19 km away, is a fishing village with a south-facing, lifeguarded Blue Flag beach and dinosaur footprints in the cliff rock — sources disagree on which end of the beach. Burgau, 14 km away, is a village beach in a sheltered bay that its municipality describes as having “calm water most of the year”. Vamus 47 serves the stop named Salema, distinct from Salema (X) on the main road. For Burgau (Praia), the checked schooldays have three outward and four return buses, but the checked weekends have no route 47 calls at that beach stop. Burgau (X) is a different stop; do not treat it as arrival at the beach. Use the dated table below to plan a half-day [25][27].

Sagres and Cape St Vincent

Sagres is the end of the road: a surf town on a plateau, 33 km and about 36 minutes from Lagos. The Fortaleza de Sagres on its headland opens 09:30–17:30 (last entry 17:00) at €10, with a cliff-top loop walk. Six kilometres further, Cape St Vincent is the south-westernmost point of mainland Europe; the headland is free to walk, though the lighthouse interior is listed as closed to visits.

Choose the stop before choosing the bus. The following checks cover 12–18 October, 26 October–1 November and 2–8 November 2026, read on 12 October. Counts are unique direct departures in each direction. The operator PDFs are marked valid from 9 September 2024 and agree with the TRENMO feed for these dates; this is a timetable check, so confirm the service before travelling [25][26][27].

Route from Lagos Terminal Buses out / back: schooldays; October weekends; checked November weekends Time out / back Last return to Lagos
47 to Sagres (Porto da Baleeira) 9/9; 5/5; 4/4 50–80 / about 65–105 min 18:30 → 19:35 on every checked day
47 to Cabo S. Vicente 3/3; 3/3; 2/2 64–95 / about 75–115 min 16:50 → 18:45 schooldays; 16:50 → 18:05 October weekends; 13:45 → 15:10 checked November weekends
47 to Salema village 6/6; 3/4; 3/4 32–52 / about 36–72 min 18:59 → 19:35 on every checked day
47 to Burgau (Praia) 3/4; 0/0; 0/0 22–24 / about 44 min on schooldays 18:01 → 18:45 on checked schooldays
51 to Alvor 6/6; 3/3; 2/2 27 min each way 19:33 → 20:00 on every checked day

The November weekend column includes Sunday 1 November, a public holiday, and 7–8 November. The checked Mondays to Fridays are schooldays; do not add school-holiday columns to them. Route 47 does not call at Salema village or Burgau beach on every trip.

For the cape, the last outward bus leaves Lagos at 15:15 on schooldays and October weekends, arriving at 16:30 on schooldays but 16:19 on those weekends. On the checked November weekends, the last outward bus is 12:30 → 13:45, the same minute as the last return departs. That is not a usable sightseeing visit: take the earlier 10:00 → 11:20 if you want time at the cape before the 13:45 return. The 18:30 bus from Baleeira does not start at the cape [25][27].

The west coast: surf beaches in the Costa Vicentina

North of Vila do Bispo, the Atlantic coast is a different world: high cliffs, big beaches and steady surf. From Lagos: Praia do Amado at Carrapateira (36 km, 43 min), a surf beach with schools and a car park; Arrifana (40 km, 46 min), a cove below a fishing village; Bordeira, Castelejo and, further north, Odeceixe. The Lagos surf schools drive here when the south coast is flat — see surf in Lagos.

Alvor and its boardwalk

Twenty minutes east, the Passadiços de Alvor are a free wooden boardwalk through the dunes between the village of Alvor and Praia dos Três Irmãos, alongside the Ria de Alvor lagoon. Sources disagree on the length: Portimão council gives 2.8 km of boardwalk, walking guides around 6 km for the full route. Flat and easy for children, with the old fishing village at one end. Vamus 51 links Lagos Terminal with the stop named Alvor in 27 minutes each way. For the dates in the table above, Lagos departures are 07:15, 10:00, 12:00, 14:15, 16:15 and 18:15 on schooldays; 07:15, 16:15 and 18:15 on October weekends; and 07:15 and 16:15 on the checked November weekends. The nine-hour weekend gap matters for a day out. Returns from Alvor are 09:18, 10:33, 13:18, 15:33, 17:33 and 19:33 on schooldays; 10:33, 13:18 and 19:33 on October weekends; and 10:33 and 19:33 on the checked November weekends. The final return reaches Lagos at 20:00. Check the current timetable before you go [26][27].

Benagil caves and the Seven Hanging Valleys trail

The Benagil cave — a sea cave with a collapsed roof — is the most photographed spot on the Algarve coast. It is 43 km from Lagos, about 40 minutes by car, and boats also sail there from Lagos marina.

The rules changed in August 2024 (Capitania do Porto de Portimão, Edital 019/2024) and were amended in July 2025 (Edital 009/2025): no swimming into the cave, no landing on its inner beach, no kayak or SUP tours or rentals without a guide. Motor boats may stay inside for two minutes; guided kayak and SUP groups up to eight. Our Benagil cave guide covers parking, kayak vs boat and kids. Videos of people swimming in are from before.

On foot, the Seven Hanging Valleys trail (Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos) runs along the cliffs between Praia da Marinha and Praia de Vale Centeanes, passing above Benagil. A 2026 walking blog puts it at about 6 km one way. Start early in summer — there’s little shade.

Silves: the castle town

Silves, inland on the river Arade, was the capital of the Moorish Algarve, and its red sandstone castle still dominates the town (Wikipedia). The municipality lists entry at €2.80 for adults, €1.40 for children, students and over-65s, or €3.90 with the archaeology museum. It’s 34 minutes by car; the train from Lagos takes about 32 minutes, but Silves station is outside the town — check the walk or a taxi before you go.

Monchique and Fóia

The Serra de Monchique is the Algarve’s mountain range, and Fóia at 902 m its highest point, 54 km from Lagos (55 minutes). The spa village of Caldas de Monchique is 6 km south of Monchique town.

With kids: zoo and water parks

  • Zoo de Lagos, 13.5 km inland — 170+ species, online tickets €17/€12.
  • Slide & Splash in Lagoa, 26 km — the nearest water park, open 1 April – 31 October 2026.
  • Zoomarine in Guia, 49 km (41 min) — marine park; its 2026 low season runs 12 March – 31 May and 1 October – 28 November.

Details in Lagos with kids.

Further: Lisbon and Seville

Lisbon is 300 km away. Since July 2026 the Algarve line runs electric trains, but Lagos – Lisbon still means a change at Tunes: about 3 h 45 to 4 h 40 towards Lisbon and 3 h 30 to 4 h 10 back, depending on whether you connect into an Alfa Pendular or an Intercidades (for example 06:20 from Lagos, 10:05 at Lisboa Oriente, or 08:22 from Lagos, 12:56 at Oriente; CP timetable data checked for 13, 17 and 18 October 2026). The last useful return leaves Oriente at 18:32 and reaches Lagos at 22:28. As a day out that is very long, so plan a night.

Seville is 276 km and about three hours by car. Aggregators list direct FlixBus and Alsa coaches at around 4 h 20 to 5 h 15. Again, plan a night.

Planning tips

  • Go early in July and August. The model times above assume no traffic; in high season, plan for longer.
  • One big trip per weekend works best for a workation. Salema, Burgau and Alvor fit into an afternoon; Sagres, Benagil and Monchique deserve a full day.
  • Car or no car? Living in Lagos without a car is easy; day-tripping without one is limited to Sagres, Benagil by boat and the train line. See getting around Lagos.

      Quick answers

How far is Sagres from Lagos?

About 33 km, 36 minutes by car (OSRM routing model, no traffic). Cape St Vincent is 39 km, about 41 minutes. Vamus 47 takes 50–80 minutes from Lagos Terminal to Sagres (Porto da Baleeira), with the last return from that stop at 18:30 for 12–18 October, 26 October–1 November and 2–8 November 2026. The cape has fewer buses: its last return is 16:50 on the checked schooldays and October weekends, but 13:45 on 1, 7 and 8 November (checked 12 October 2026).

Can you do a day trip from Lagos to Lisbon?

Possible but long: every train journey means a change at Tunes and takes about 3 h 45 to 4 h 40 towards Lisbon and 3 h 30 to 4 h 10 back, the faster ones with the Alfa Pendular (CP timetable data, checked for 13, 17 and 18 October 2026). The earliest useful train leaves Lagos at 06:20 and the last return gets back at 22:28, and driving is about 300 km. It works better as an overnight trip.

Can you visit Benagil from Lagos without a car?

Yes, by boat. Several operators sail from Lagos marina to the Benagil caves. Since August 2024 you cannot swim into the cave or land on its beach; boats go in for a couple of minutes.

What is the best day trip from Lagos with kids?

Short drives work best: Salema's calm, lifeguarded beach with dinosaur footprints (19 km), Zoo de Lagos (13.5 km) or Slide & Splash water park in Lagoa (26 km, open April–October 2026).
