Beach in Algarve

Praia da Arrifana

Cliff-ringed surf bay below Arrifana village (Aljezur): beginner beach break in the middle, advanced point on the right. Blue Flag and lifeguard 2026; steep walk and stairs down, narrow at high tide.

Hours
Open access. Lifeguards during the 2026 bathing season, 1 Jun–30 Sep (Portaria 204-A/2026/1; also listed as 'praia de uso limitado'). Blue Flag 2026 (ABAE).

OK with kids

Families do visit, but waves can be strong and the beach almost disappears at high tide; the steep road and stairs make it hard with a pushchair (algarvetips.com, Feb 2026). Research, not first-hand.

The notes

Arrifana is a horseshoe bay under high cliffs, with a small fishing settlement at one end and the village of Arrifana above it, west of Aljezur [1]. It is one of the few west-coast beaches where beginners and experienced surfers can share the same bay without getting in each other’s way: the beach break in the middle suits learners, while the point break on the right-hand side is for experienced surfers only [4].

Why it works for learning. The bay faces west/south-west and the cliffs shelter it from the northern wind, yet it still catches plenty of swell [4]. APA lists it as a beach with conditions for surfing and bodyboarding [1]. Schools operate here and boards and wetsuits can be rented [4].

Tides matter. At high tide the beach becomes very narrow and almost disappears, pushing everyone toward the rocks under the cliffs; there are also rocks in the middle of the beach to watch for at high water [4]. Plan your day around low tide.

Getting there. From the clifftop you walk down a steep, winding road — the cars parked along it belong to residents — and finish with stairs [4]. With a pushchair or a toddler on your hip, that walk back up is the real cost of the day.

Safety and status. Lifeguards 1 June–30 September 2026 [2]; Blue Flag 2026 [3]. Like Castelejo, the Portaria also lists it as a limited-use beach without a stated reason [2].

Who it suits. Surfers of all levels and nomads basing themselves around Aljezur. Families can come with care; for small children the lagoon beaches further north (Amoreira, Odeceixe) are easier.

Check before you go: where to park in summer (clifftop spaces fill early) — no official parking information found.
