Beach in Algarve

Praia de Odeceixe

The Algarve's northernmost beach, where the Seixe river meets the sea: calm river pools for children at low tide, surf schools on the ocean side, full facilities. Blue Flag and lifeguard 2026.

Hours
Open access. Lifeguards during the 2026 bathing season, 1 Jun–30 Sep (Portaria 204-A/2026/1, 'Odeceixe-Mar'). Blue Flag 2026 (ABAE).

Great with kids

Shallow pools and the river lagoon at low tide, lifeguards, toilets and showers in summer; the ocean side has strong waves and currents (algarvetips.com, Feb 2026; Wikipedia). Research, not first-hand.

The notes

Odeceixe is the last beach of the Algarve before Alentejo begins, and it is the most complete family beach on the west coast. The Ribeira de Seixe curls behind the sand into the sea at the northern end, where lagoons form [1]; at low tide shallow pools spread across the beach, warmer and calmer than the ocean [5]. It is the northernmost beach in the Algarve [4].

With kids. Come around low tide — about two hours either side, AlgarveTips suggests — when the sand is wide and the pools are easy for paddling; as the tide rises the waves hit harder and the beach narrows [5]. In summer there are lifeguards, toilets, showers, cafés and sunbeds [5]; the 2026 lifeguard season runs 1 June–30 September [2], and the beach holds a 2026 Blue Flag [3]. The ocean side can have strong waves and dangerous currents, and plenty of surfers, so swimming is better in the river [5].

Surf. Two surf schools are based on the beach and teach all levels, including complete beginners [5].

Getting there. Odeceixe village is about 2 km inland [6]. Park on the southern cliffs or, if full, along the road [5]. At low tide you can walk round the headland to Praia das Adegas, which is a naturist beach; otherwise there is a cliff path with stairs [5].

For nomads and workation. It is far from Sagres — the opposite end of the Algarve’s west coast — so it fits a week based in Aljezur or Odeceixe rather than a day trip from Sagres.

Check before you go: tide times; café hours outside July–August.
