Beach in Algarve

Praia da Bordeira

Huge dune-backed beach at Carrapateira (Aljezur) with a calm river lagoon for children at one end and open Atlantic surf at the other. Lifeguard 2026; boardwalk from the clifftop car park; windy.

Hours
Open access. Lifeguards during the 2026 bathing season, 1 Jun–30 Sep (Portaria 204-A/2026/1). Not on the ABAE 2026 Blue Flag list.

OK with kids

The calm, shallow lagoon of the Ribeira da Bordeira is where children play; the open sea has strong currents and the beach is very exposed to wind (algarvetips.com, Feb 2026). Research, not first-hand.

The notes

Bordeira is a broad beach backed by large dunes, next to Carrapateira [5][6]. The Ribeira da Bordeira runs across the sand before it reaches the sea and forms a calm, shallow lagoon where children play; out on the open beach the Atlantic is wild and the currents can be strong [4]. The municipality and a beach directory report different lengths, so check the route you intend to walk rather than relying on one distance.

Surf. The beach faces north-west and picks up a lot of swell. Depending on season and size, waves range from beginner-friendly to experienced-only; winter is often too rough for beginners, and the southern sandbanks near the lagoon are gentler than the punchier northern end [4].

With kids. The lagoon is the reason to come with small children [4]. Plan for wind: the beach is wide and open, and AlgarveTips warns it can get quite windy [4]. Lifeguards are on duty 1 June–30 September 2026 [2]. Bordeira does not have a Blue Flag in 2026 [3].

Getting there. Drive to Carrapateira and follow the signs. There is a free car park on top of the cliffs and a wooden trail down to the sand [4] — a walk, so bring what you need in one go. The APA registry lists a restaurant [5].

For nomads. We’d pair it with the Pontal da Carrapateira headland walk on a day off; the beach itself is a place to empty your head, not to open a laptop.

Check before you go: whether the lagoon is there — it depends on tide and season; restaurant hours.
