Surfing from Lagos works differently from what most first-timers expect. Lagos faces south, into a sheltered bay, so its own beaches get rideable waves only on some days. The schools deal with that by choosing the beach each day: Meia Praia or Porto de Mós when the south coast has swell, the west coast – Amado, Arrifana, Castelejo, 30–45 minutes away – when it doesn’t. That’s why most lessons here are sold as full-day trips with transport, at about €60–70 a day in 2026.

Lagos Surf Safari €60 (€65 Jun–Sep); €275 for 5 days €120–150 – Daily trips to the south or west coast

All prices are from the schools’ own websites, read on 4 October 2026, and include board, wetsuit and transport unless stated. Lagos Surf Center’s site footer dates from 2015 and its group prices are only on the Portuguese page – confirm when booking.

Which one? For a single taster day, any of them. For a week, compare the multi-day price – Algarve Watersport drops to €45 a day from day five. For children under 7, Lagos Surf Center and Jah Shaka’s partners start at 6. If you want a lunch and the social side of a camp without staying in one, The Surf Experience includes lunch on its day trips.

Where you’ll surf

South coast (Lagos itself):

  • Meia Praia – the long beach east of town; the schools’ first choice for beginners when there’s swell. Lifeguards June–September.
  • Porto de Mós – more exposed to the Atlantic than Meia Praia; used by Algarve Watersport among others.

West coast (Costa Vicentina):

Drive times are from the OSRM routing model without traffic.

Don’t try to carry a board down to Dona Ana or Camilo in summer: a 2024 municipal regulation bans surfboards, SUPs and kayaks on those stairways between 09:00 and 19:00 in the bathing season (bodyboards are allowed).

When to surf

The schools run all year. The offshore Lagos sea averages 15.5 °C in February and 20.6 °C in September [15]. July and August bring the warmest air and the busiest beaches; Jah Shaka’s prices go up from July to October.

Sea: NOAA OISST v2.1 offshore surface temperatures, 2001–2020, calculated and checked on 11 October 2026 (Lagos 36.875° N, 8.625° W [15]). We average daily values within each month and year, then give each of the 20 annual monthly means equal weight. These 0.25° grid cells are coastal proxies, not measurements at individual beaches or a forecast.

For the rest of the year’s weather, see Lagos weather by month.

Renting a board

If you can already surf, the shops in the old town rent equipment: Jah Shaka rents surfboards and SUPs (a SUP for €20 for four hours on its price list), and Lagos Surf Center runs a rental alongside its trips. Without a car, the west coast is hard to reach on your own – a school’s surf trip doubles as transport.

Surf camp or apartment?

A camp such as The Surf Experience sells packages with accommodation, breakfast, lunch, lessons and transport – 3 days from €256 in 2026, higher in July–September. For families or anyone working remotely, an apartment plus day lessons is usually more flexible; see where to stay in Lagos.

Surfing with a laptop

Day trips leave at 08:30–09:00 and come back mid-afternoon, so a surf day is a day off work. A pattern that fits a working week: two or three surf days, the rest at a coworking desk in the morning and Meia Praia after 16:00.

    Quick answers

    Is Lagos good for surfing?

For learning, yes. Lagos faces south, so its own beaches only get waves on some days; the schools teach at Meia Praia or Porto de Mós when there's swell and drive to the west coast (Amado, Arrifana, Castelejo – 30–45 minutes) when there isn't. That's why most lessons are sold as full-day trips.

How much is a surf lesson in Lagos?

A full-day group lesson with board, wetsuit and transport costs €60–70 in 2026: Lagos Surf Safari €60 (€65 June–September), Jah Shaka from €60 (€70 July–October), Algarve Watersport and The Surf Experience €65. Private lessons start at about €120–200.

Can children take surf lessons in Lagos?

Yes, usually from 6 or 7. Algarve Watersport takes children from 7 with at most four per instructor; Lagos Surf Center runs lessons for 6–14s who must have an adult with them; Jah Shaka's partner schools teach kids 6–15 at a 4:1 ratio.

What is the water temperature for surfing in Lagos?

The offshore Lagos sea averages 15.5 °C in February and 20.6 °C in September (NOAA OISST, 2001–2020). A full wetsuit is normal for most of the year; schools include one in the lesson price.
