Where to stay in Lagos, Portugalareas for a week, a month or a family stay
The five areas to stay in Lagos — old town, the marina front, Meia Praia, the Ponta da Piedade side and Praia da Luz — compared for walking, beaches, kids and working, with named hotels and what a month's rent looks like in 2026.

Short answer: stay in the old town or on the Avenida dos Descobrimentos facing the marina if you want to walk everywhere; at Meia Praia if the beach is the point, especially with small children; on the Ponta da Piedade side (Dona Ana, Porto de Mós) for the cliff coves and quieter nights; in Praia da Luz if you want a village and don’t mind driving. For a month of work, pick by the coworking or café you will use every morning, not by the view.
Lagos is small. From the marina to Ponta da Piedade is about 3 km, so no area is far from another — but the hills and the stairs down to the coves make the choice matter more than the map suggests.
Lagos areas at a glance
| Area | Walk to old town | Nearest beach | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Old town | You’re in it | Batata, a few minutes | First visit, no car, evenings out | Bar noise in summer; parking |
| Marina front (Avenida) | 5–10 min | Batata or Meia Praia | Train, buses, parking, families | Busy road |
| Meia Praia | Longer; railway halt | Meia Praia on the doorstep | Small kids, beach days, surf lessons | Less to do in the evening |
| Ponta da Piedade / Torraltinha | 15–30 min, uphill back | Dona Ana, Camilo, Porto de Mós | Coves, quiet, sunset walks | Stairs to most beaches |
| Praia da Luz (7 km west) | Drive or bus | Praia da Luz | A village base, calm sea | You’ll want a car |
Walking times are estimates from the area descriptions in the sources below, not measured routes.
Old town: walk to everything
The old town inside and around the walls is the most central place to stay, and every guide we read puts it first for a short stay. Restaurants, the Saturday market, the museum and most of the laptop-friendly cafés are on foot, and Praia da Batata is about 100 metres from the historic centre.
The trade-off is noise. Julie Dawn Fox, who has stayed in Lagos repeatedly since the 2000s, advises reading reviews for bar and nightclub noise before booking in the centre. Streets are narrow and many old-town buildings are on hills; for a family with luggage, check the last 200 metres on Street View.
Hotels in or at the edge of the old town, from their own websites: Casa Mãe (Rua do Jogo da Bola, by the walls). Self-catering studios and apartments make up much of the rest — The Salty Lodge is one named by Julie Dawn Fox.
Marina front: the practical choice
The Avenida dos Descobrimentos runs along the river opposite the Marina de Lagos. It is the base we’d suggest checking first if you arrive without a car: the bus terminal and the railway station are on this side of town, Meia Praia starts just over the footbridge, and the old town is behind you.
It is also the easiest place to park. The municipal company Lagos em Forma runs the 445-space Frente Ribeirinha car park on the riverfront and the 386-space Anel Verde by the old town; its 2023 tariff puts Frente Ribeirinha at €1.30 an hour in season with a €13 daily cap, and offers week and month passes. Hotels here, from their own websites: Hotel Marina Rio (Av. dos Descobrimentos) and Lagos Avenida Hotel (Sonel Hotels group).
Meia Praia: the family beach base
Meia Praia is the long beach east of the marina, and the area behind it is mostly hotels, resorts and apartment blocks. Julie Dawn Fox names it the best area for families: a wide sandy beach without stairs, a train stop by the beach, and town within reach. The beach has a Blue Flag for 2026, lifeguards from June to September and the municipality’s accessible-beach label.
It is also where the surf schools teach beginners when the south coast has waves — see surf in Lagos. The downside is evenings: you’ll walk, take a taxi or drive into town for dinner.
Hotels here, from their own websites: Iberostar Selection Lagos Algarve (Estrada da Meia Praia), Vila Galé Lagos (all-inclusive from April to October) and Dom Pedro Lagos (apartments by the beach).
Ponta da Piedade side: coves and quiet
South and west of the old town, the Torraltinha area and the roads towards Ponta da Piedade put you close to Dona Ana, Camilo and Porto de Mós. It is quieter, with sunset walks along the cliffs. Julie Dawn Fox’s caveats: some of these beaches involve steep steps — Dona Ana and Camilo are reached only by long stairways — and the walk back from town is uphill after dinner. Porto de Mós is the exception: flat, accessible, Blue Flag 2026.
For work, two options sit out here: the Lifestyle @ Vila Mós coworking near Porto de Mós (day pass €20 with monitor and free parking) and the Noma Village coliving.
Hotels here, from their own websites or named by Julie Dawn Fox: Cascade Wellness Resort (rooms, apartments and villas, Rua das Ilhas), Costa d’Oiro Ambiance Village near Dona Ana (Sonel Hotels), Dom Manuel I and Villas D. Dinis (both adults-only), Belmar Spa & Beach Resort (apartments near Porto de Mós).
Praia da Luz: a village base
Luz is a former fishing village 7 km west of Lagos, in the same municipality, with a Blue Flag beach half sand, half rock. Plum Guide (2023) calls it a great option for families. It is a separate place, though: you’ll drive into Lagos (about 13 minutes by the OSRM model) or use the town bus: in the operator’s current timetables only the yellow line 4 (Onda Amarela) serves Luz, on its way to Burgau, with fewer buses at weekends (aonda.pt, read 11 October 2026; check before you go).
For a longer family stay it has one thing Lagos town doesn’t: an international school, Vale Verde, on the Burgau road. More in Lagos with kids. Hotel here, from its own website: Belavista da Luz.
Hotel, apartment or a monthly rental?
Up to a week: a hotel or aparthotel in the old town or on the marina front keeps it simple. Families often do better with an apartment — a kitchen and a second room matter more than a pool by day four.
Two weeks to a month: look for holiday apartments with a proper desk and a stated internet speed. Ask the host for a recent speed test and whether the connection is fibre or a mobile router. It’s a fair question; a screenshot is a start, not a guarantee.
A month or more: monthly holiday-let prices are a different market from local leases. idealista’s index for standard leases in Lagos was €16.2 per m² per month in May 2026, down from €18.1 in October 2025 — a 50 m² flat works out around €800 a month before bills (our arithmetic). Numbeo’s crowd-sourced figure is €1,037.50 for a one-bedroom in the centre (25 contributors, October 2026). Across the Algarve, idealista’s asking rents peak in July (€22.5/m² in 2026). Monthly holiday lets are a separate, pricier market, especially in July and August. Platforms, lease rules and scams: monthly rentals in the Algarve.
Check the licence number. Every short-term rental in Portugal (Alojamento Local) has a registration number, and the law requires it in all advertising — platforms like Airbnb and Booking must display it (Turismo de Portugal technical guide, January 2025). No number on a listing is a reason to ask why.
For a workation: three questions before you book
- Where will you work at 9 a.m.? Most specialty cafés open at 8–9 and close at 16:00; The Studio runs to 18:00 and DOT to 19:00. Coworking: Nest (day pass €16) and the municipal CoLagos (€10 a day) are both in town. Pick a base within walking distance of one of them.
- How fast is the flat’s internet? No agency publishes a Lagos-wide speed; the only figure is nomads.com’s crowd-sourced 53 Mbps average. Ask the host. Full detail in working remotely from Lagos.
- What’s the time difference to your team? Lagos runs on Lisbon time, the same as London.
When to book
Lukáš’s rule from our own stays: book summer by February. Search interest moves early too: in Marketing Miner’s UK data, “lagos portugal where to stay” peaks in January at 200 searches a month against a 70 average.
For July and August, the best-located family apartments go first.Outside summer, the pressure drops. For what each month is like, see Lagos weather by month; for getting here from the airport, Faro airport to Lagos.

Quick answers
What is the best area to stay in Lagos, Portugal?
For a first visit without a car, the old town or the Avenida dos Descobrimentos opposite the marina: restaurants, the bus terminal and the train station are walkable, and Praia da Batata is a few minutes away. For a beach-first family stay, Meia Praia. For the cliff coves and a quieter base, the Ponta da Piedade side (Dona Ana, Porto de Mós).
Is Meia Praia or the old town better for families?
Meia Praia if beach days are the point: it is a long, flat, lifeguarded beach with a Blue Flag in 2026 and its own railway halt. The old town if you want to walk to dinner; its nearest beach, Batata, is also flat and lifeguarded but much smaller and busier.
How much does it cost to rent an apartment in Lagos for a month?
idealista's rent index for Lagos was €16.2 per m² per month in May 2026, so a 50 m² flat on a standard lease works out around €800 before bills. Holiday lets for a month cost more, and much more in July–August. Numbeo's crowd-sourced figure for a one-bedroom in the centre was €1,037.50 (October 2026, 25 contributors).
When should I book accommodation in Lagos for summer?
Early: Lukáš's rule from our stays is to book summer by February, and UK search interest in 'where to stay in Lagos' peaks in January (Marketing Miner).
Do I need a car if I stay in Lagos?
Not in the old town or on the marina front: the beaches at Batata and Meia Praia, the bus terminal and the train station are walkable. A car matters if you stay at Porto de Mós, Luz or inland, or want the west coast beaches.
