Getting around Lagos, Portugalwalking, town buses, trains, taxis, car hire and parking

How to get around Lagos without a car — the A ONDA town buses, the train to Portimão and Faro, Vamus buses to Sagres, Uber and Bolt — and, if you do drive, where to park and what the 2026 municipal parking tariffs are.

You can live in Lagos without a car. The old town, the marina, Praia da Batata and Meia Praia are all within walking distance of each other; the town buses, the train and Uber or Bolt cover most of the rest. A car becomes worth it for the west coast surf beaches, Monchique, and stays out at Porto de Mós or Luz — and if you have one, park it in one of the two municipal car parks and leave it there.

On foot

Lagos is compact. From the marina to the old town is a few minutes over the footbridge; from the old town to Ponta da Piedade is about 3 km, partly uphill. The coastal paths connect Batata, Pinhão, Dona Ana, Camilo, Ponta da Piedade and on west to Porto de Mós and Luz on the Fishermen’s Trail.

Town buses: A ONDA

The municipal bus network, A ONDA, has 10 lines across the municipality. The town hall’s own guide for visitors: the red (Vermelha), turquoise and grey lines for the centre, the blue (Azul) line for the beaches, and the yellow, pink and green lines for Luz, Odiáxere and Barão de São João (the zoo is on line 6 by the zoo’s own directions). Tickets and passes are sold at the bus terminal (Terminal Rodoviário).

We couldn’t confirm 2026 single fares on an official page; Numbeo’s crowd-sourced figure is €1.50 a ride. The operator says young people up to 23 travel free with the national Passe Jovem.

Change is coming: in April 2026 the council approved a €20 million tender for a new 11-line network covering 96% of residents, with some lines running from about 06:00 to 01:00. The operator had not been chosen when we checked.

Train: Lagos station and the Algarve line

Lagos is the western end of the Algarve railway. Since 19 July 2026 the line runs electric trains, with direct services from Lagos all the way to Vila Real de Santo António — no change in Faro. On the current CP timetable:

  • Lagos → Portimão: 18 minutes
  • Lagos → Silves: about 32 minutes (Silves station is outside the town)
  • Lagos → Faro: €8.30 on the regional fare table from July 2026
  • Lagos → Lisbon: about 3 h 45 to 4 h 40 to Lisboa Oriente with a change at Tunes (Lisbon → Lagos 3 h 30 to 4 h 10), five connections a day each way; the faster ones connect with an Alfa Pendular, the slower with an Intercidades (CP timetable from 19 July 2026, checked 11 October 2026)

There’s also a halt at Meia Praia, one stop from Lagos, the easy way to the beach with children and bags. Only regional trains stop there, 9 a day each way on weekdays and 7 on Sundays, with a gap of about five hours around midday (from Lagos 08:22, then 13:22), so check the times.

Regional buses: Vamus Algarve

Vamus Algarve runs the regional buses from the terminal on the Avenida dos Descobrimentos:

  • Line 47 — Lagos – Salema – Vila do Bispo – Sagres, 50 to 80 minutes depending on the departure (1 h 05 to 1 h 45 back); more services on weekdays than at weekends (Vamus GTFS, October 2026).
  • Aerobus — Faro airport – Faro – Albufeira – Lagoa – Portimão – Lagos.
  • Line 80 — Lagos – Portimão (the train is faster).

Vamus sells a 3- or 7-day tourist pass valid on its regular lines including the Aerobus; the price wasn’t on its page. From Faro airport, all the options — car, transfer, train, FlixBus, Aerobus — are compared in Faro airport to Lagos.

Taxis, Uber and Bolt

Both Uber and Bolt operate in Lagos, alongside ordinary taxis. Numbeo’s crowd-sourced taxi tariff is €5.00 to start plus €0.90 per km (October 2026). In high season and late at night, expect to wait.

Car hire

Most visitors pick up a car at Faro airport, 90 km away; the A22 motorway between the airport and Lagos has been toll-free since 1 January 2025. If you only want a car for a weekend of day trips, ask about a pick-up in Lagos itself — we couldn’t confirm from the companies’ own sites which ones have a desk in town. Fuel was €1.78 a litre on Numbeo’s latest figure.

When booking, check the excess, and ask about an electronic toll device if you plan to drive beyond the Algarve — the A22 is free, but the motorway north to Lisbon is not.

Parking in Lagos

Parking in town is run by the municipal company Lagos em Forma. The tariff in force (Edital n.º 175/2023) has two seasons: high season 1 June – 30 September, low season the rest of the year.

Car park Spaces Per hour (high / low) Daily cap (high / low)
Anel Verde / Praça d’Armas — by the old town 386 €1.00 / €0.80 €10 / €8
Frente Ribeirinha — riverfront 445, open 24 h €1.30 / €1.00 €13 / €10

Both charge in 15-minute steps. For longer stays there are passes: Anel Verde €55 a month; Frente Ribeirinha €45 a week or €100 a month in season (€40 / €70 out of season). A prepaid “Credit Park” card (from €5) gives 20% off in both. If you shop at the Mercado da Avenida, a stamped receipt gets you the first hour at Frente Ribeirinha free.

Street parking in the centre is in zones with time limits — 3 hours in zones A and B, 5 hours in zone C — at €0.75–0.85 an hour. Zone D, the car park on the Avenida dos Descobrimentos between Hotel Marina Rio and the harbour office, is the cheap day option: €3 a day or €15 a week on weekdays out of season, €5 a day in season.

Free parking exists further out. A 2026 local blog points to unpaved areas above the town walls and spaces at Meia Praia and Torraltinha; we haven’t been able to confirm these on an official source, and note that the monthly market fills the area by the stadium on the first Saturday.

Bikes and scooters

We couldn’t verify bike or e-scooter rental operators for 2026. The municipality’s 2023 plan for the rebuilt Ponta da Piedade road includes a cycle lane alongside it.

The municipal company Lagos em Forma runs two covered car parks: Anel Verde / Praça d'Armas by the old town (386 spaces, €1.00/h in season, €10 daily cap) and Frente Ribeirinha on the riverfront (445 spaces, €1.30/h, €13 daily cap). Street parking in the centre is limited to 3–5 hours (Edital 175/2023).
