Schedules and fare insights checked on 4 October 2026. Airline networks change every season, so the route lists below are a snapshot with a date. Fare patterns come from Google Flights’ published route insights, which are based on fares observed over the previous 12 months — they describe a typical year, not a price you can book. We list no current prices.

To fly to the Algarve, fly to Faro (FAO). It is the region’s main international airport, about 4 km in a straight line and 7–8 km by road from Faro city, depending on the address [25][26], with direct flights every day from London, Manchester, Dublin, Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt [1][4–9]. The UK is the airport’s largest market at 46% of traffic [2]. From North America there are two direct options: Air Transat from Toronto twice a week, and United’s seasonal summer route from Newark [3][10][11]. Fares are typically lowest between November and February and highest from June to August [4–11].

Faro airport in numbers

  • Passengers: about 10.4 million in 2025, the first year above 10 million; 9.8 million in 2024 [1][2].
  • Markets: the UK first (46%), then Germany, Ireland, France and the Netherlands [2].
  • Airlines: 33 regular carriers in 2025, according to Portugal Resident [2].
  • Busiest routes in 2024: London Gatwick (854,000 passengers), Dublin, Manchester, London Stansted and Bristol [1].
  • Winter: winter 2024/25 was the airport’s busiest on record; winter traffic more than doubled between 2015 and 2025 [2].

Snapshot as of 4 October 2026. “Weekly” figures are Google Flights’ count of non-stop flights on the route [4–11]; the rest comes from Wikipedia’s airlines table [1]. Check the airline’s own schedule before you plan around a route.

Wikipedia’s table also lists direct routes from Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Austria, Scandinavia, Finland, Poland, the Baltics, Iceland, Spain, Italy and Morocco, many of them seasonal [1].

The US route. United’s inaugural Newark–Faro flight, UA281, left Newark on 16 May 2025 [23], the Algarve’s first direct link to the US; according to Portugal Resident the route restarted on 15 May 2026 [3]. It is a summer route: Google Flights showed no direct New York–Faro flights when we checked in October [11]. Outside summer, US travellers connect — Google lists British Airways and TAP among the most frequent connecting options from New York [11].

When flights to Faro are cheapest

Google Flights publishes, for each route, the month that was typically cheapest and most expensive over the past 12 months of observed fares [4–11]:

Route Typically cheapest Typically most expensive
London → Faro November August [4]
Manchester → Faro December June [5]
Dublin → Faro December June [6]
Amsterdam → Faro January July [7]
Frankfurt → Faro February July [8]
Paris → Faro March August [9]
Toronto → Faro November July [10]
New York → Faro (with a connection) February June [11]

The pattern follows the season: Google’s own route page describes April to September as the popular time to visit Faro, peaking in July and August [4]. Note the limits: these are Google’s statistical summaries of past fares, not forecasts, and one cheap month says nothing about a particular day. We found no other published source for the “best time to book” question that we would cite, so this page does not give one.

For nomads and workation: the cheap months (November to February) are off-season, so on paper they suit a long stay best if you can live with shorter days and cooler water. See the best time to visit the Algarve for weather and season. For families: if you are tied to school holidays, the cheapest month on this table is not available to you; the data says July and August are the expensive end from most markets.

Lisbon. Lisbon airport has its own metro station [14]. Long-distance trains to the Algarve leave from Lisboa Oriente: five direct trains a day to Faro in the timetable valid from 6 September 2026 — two Alfa Pendular (08:23 and 17:23, about 3 h) and three Intercidades (10:02, 14:02 and 18:32, about 3 h 30) — all with compulsory seat reservations [15]. For Lagos, change at Tunes for the regional train on the Linha do Algarve [15][16]. FlixBus lists 11 coaches a day from Lisbon (Sete Rios) to Lagos, fastest 3 h 40, and also a Lisbon Airport–Lagos route [22]. Rail and coach fares were not verified for this page. TAP also flies Lisbon–Faro, 18 times a week, 40 minutes [12].

Seville. FlixBus lists four daily coaches from Seville to Faro, the first at 07:50 and the last at 17:50, with a minimum journey of 1 h 55 (it showed 1 h 45 a week earlier), plus a Seville–Faro Airport route [21]. Spain is one hour ahead of Portugal; we could not confirm whether FlixBus’s listed time allows for that, so check the actual departure and arrival times when you book.

“Flights to Lagos”: there is no airport in Lagos

People search for flights from Lisbon to Lagos, but Lagos has no airport. The nearest international airport is Faro, about 86 km away by road (routing model) [27]. Portimão has a small municipal aerodrome at Montes de Alvor (LPPM) with an 860 m runway, used for light aircraft, aerial advertising and skydiving [13]. It is also a stop on Sevenair’s domestic regional air link from Bragança via Vila Real, Viseu and Cascais [24] — useful if you are coming from northern Portugal, but not from Lisbon airport or abroad. We did not verify that route’s current days and times. From Lisbon, your options are the TAP flight to Faro plus the onward trip, the train via Tunes, or the coach — see the section above.

After you land

Faro airport is about 4 km in a straight line and 7–8 km by road from the city, depending on the address [25][26]; buses 14 and 16 link it with Faro bus station, next to the railway station [1]; check the current timetable, since not every line runs all day. The full comparison of ways on to Lagos and Sagres — hire car on the toll-free A22, transfer, train, bus — is in Faro airport to Lagos and Sagres. If you are hiring a car, read car hire in the Algarve before you get to the desk: the excess, the deposit and the toll-device fee are where the costs are.

Families: baggage, infant and child-seat rules on the plane are set by each airline and change often, so we have not listed them; check your airline before booking. Nomads: if you are planning a longer stay, read working remotely in the Algarve and, for non-EU passport holders, Portugal’s digital nomad visa.
