Louléthe market, the castle, coworking and walks in the hills behind the coast

What to do in Loulé, inland of Vilamoura: the 1908 market hall and Saturday market, the castle museum (€1.62), Loulé Criativo craft workshops, two coworkings with published prices, an easy walk at Benémola and the Rocha da Pena plateau, and why it works as a base for a work week.

Short answer: Loulé is a market and county town 14 km inland from Vilamoura, not a resort [13]. This guide is research; we haven’t been there for it. Come for the domed 1908 market hall in the morning [1], the castle museum (€1.62) [4] and an easy walk at Fonte da Benémola [9]. For remote workers it has the most choice we found in central Algarve: two coworkings publish their prices, from €12 a day [6][7].

The market

The Mercado Municipal opened on 27 July 1908. It’s an Islamic-revival building with domes, restored between 2004 and 2007, and it now holds about 30 shops and cafés alongside the stalls [1]. The only official hours we found are 07:00–15:00, from a 2012 council notice, so go in the morning and check locally [2].

The council also lists a separate weekly market every Saturday in Loulé [3]. We couldn’t confirm from an official source where it’s held or its hours, so don’t build a Saturday around it until you’ve checked locally. It isn’t the same thing as the market hall. Other markets in the municipality: Quarteira on Wednesdays, Almancil on the 1st and 4th Sunday with a flea market on the 2nd and 3rd, and Querença on the last Sunday of the month [3].

The old town and the castle

  • Castelo de Loulé houses the municipal museum. It’s open Tuesday–Saturday, 10:00–13:30 and 14:30–18:00, for €1.62, free for under-12s. The archaeology section is temporarily closed, but the castle and the Traditional Kitchen museum are open [4].
  • The restored Islamic baths, on the same ticket list, also open on Sundays [4].
  • Loulé Criativo is the council’s craft programme: workshops in tile painting, embroidery, weaving, copper work and pottery, based at Palácio Gama Lobo [5]. Prices aren’t published. Email [email protected] [5]. It’s a good rainy-day activity for older children and adults.

Working from Loulé

Space Price (published) Hours Note
Mucancas CoWork €12 day · €44 week · from €99 month, + VAT [6] not published Internet, phone, reception included [6]
Golden Creative €15 day · €55 week · €160 month, + VAT [7] Mon–Fri 08:00–18:00 [7] Fibre Wi-Fi, free parking; book 24 h ahead [7]
HQ (Regus brand) not shown [8] — Centre next to the market and one at Quinta do Lago [8]

That’s more choice than we found anywhere else in central Algarve. In Albufeira we verified only a free municipal room with office hours (see is Albufeira worth it). None of these spaces publishes a Wi-Fi speed or says whether it has a room for calls, so ask before you book a week.

Cost of living: Numbeo’s Loulé page has no usable rent data, and we found no dated monthly-rental offers to cite.

Into the hills

  • Fonte da Benémola (PR16): a circular walk of 4.2 km, graded easy, about an hour. It starts from a dirt car park on the EM 524 between Tôr and Querença [9], 9.2 km by road from Loulé, about 13 minutes [13]. It’s the easy family option.
  • Rocha da Pena: a protected limestone plateau of about 671 ha near Salir, rising to 479 m, with the PR18 trail. The council publishes the GPX [10] but its page gives no length or difficulty, so check the GPX before taking children.

Events

  • Festival MED has run in the historic centre since 2004. The council lists it in June [3][12].
  • Carnival parades in Loulé, Quarteira, Alte and Boliqueime [3]. We found no official 2027 dates.

Quick answers

When is Loulé market?

The covered market hall (Mercado Municipal, opened 1908) works in the mornings; the only official hours we found are 07:00–15:00, from a council notice of 2012, so check locally. The council lists a weekly market in Loulé every Saturday. Quarteira's market is on Wednesdays.

Is Loulé worth visiting?

Yes, as a half day or a base. It has a domed market hall from 1908, a castle with the municipal museum (€1.62, free for under-12s), craft workshops run by the council, and an easy walk at Fonte da Benémola, 9 km north by road (about 13 minutes). It has no beach of its own: Quarteira and Vilamoura are about 14 km away.

Is there coworking in Loulé?

Yes. Mucancas CoWork publishes €12 a day, €44 a week and from €99 a month plus VAT; Golden Creative €15 a day, €55 a week and €160 a month plus 23% VAT, Mon–Fri 08:00–18:00 with free parking; HQ (the Regus brand) lists a centre next to the market and one at Quinta do Lago, without public prices.

How do you get to Loulé without a car?

By train it is awkward: Loulé station is about 5 km from the town, between Loulé and Quarteira, with shuttle buses timed to long-distance trains. From Faro airport it is 21 km by road, about 38 minutes without traffic.

What are the best walks near Loulé?

Fonte da Benémola (PR16) is a 4.2 km circular walk, graded easy, about an hour, starting from a car park on the EM 524 near Querença. Rocha da Pena is a protected limestone plateau of about 671 ha rising to 479 m, with the PR18 trail; the council publishes the GPX.
