Getting around the Algarve without a cartrains, buses and what doesn't work
The Algarve without a car, checked on 4 October 2026: the Lagos–Vila Real de Santo António railway and which stations sit far from their towns, Vamus regional buses, Faro's Próximo, coaches, Bolt and Uber, the Ecovia cycle route and the Ria Formosa ferries, with fares and dates.

Timetables and fares checked on 4 October 2026. Transport details change faster than anything else on this site. Train data comes from CP’s own timetable and fare tables valid from 19 July 2026. Several bus fares come from an enthusiast timetable site rather than the operator, and the page says so each time. Driving distances are routing-model estimates, not measured journeys.
The short answer: the south coast of the Algarve works without a car, and the west coast mostly doesn’t. One railway runs from Lagos to Vila Real de Santo António, with through trains end to end since July 2026 [1][3]. Vamus regional buses link most towns between them [11]. The gaps are Sagres and the Costa Vicentina, stations that sit kilometres from their towns, and evenings and weekends, when buses thin out sharply [11]. If you pick your base on the railway, a week or a month without a car is realistic on paper. If you want surf beaches on the west coast every day, it isn’t.
Faro airport is 4 km from the city, with town buses 14 and 16 into Faro [25]. The full airport leg is covered in Faro airport to Lagos and Sagres and, for the central Algarve, Faro airport to Albufeira and Vilamoura, so it isn’t repeated here.

Route 47 date check: for 12–18 October, 26 October–1 November and 2–8 November 2026, Lagos Terminal–Porto da Baleeira has nine departures each way on schooldays, five on October weekends and four on the checked November weekends (including the 1 November public holiday). The last return from Porto da Baleeira is 18:30 → Lagos 19:35; other Sagres stops and the cape have different times. The operator PDF is marked valid from 9 September 2024 and agrees with TRENMO for these dates. Confirm your departure and fare before travelling [30][31].
Prices with an “enthusiast site” note come from algarvebus.info, which says it collects fares from printed timetables and ticket offices “in good faith” [11]. It is the most detailed public source we found, but it is not the operator.
The train: CP Linha do Algarve
The railway is the backbone. Since 19 July 2026, with electrification finished, CP runs trains straight through from Vila Real de Santo António to Lagos without a change in Faro [3].
Stations, west to east [1]: Lagos, Meia Praia, Mexilhoeira Grande, Portimão, Ferragudo, Estômbar-Lagoa, Silves, Poço Barreto, Alcantarilha, Algoz, Tunes, Albufeira-Ferreiras, Boliqueime, Loulé, Almancil, Parque das Cidades, Faro, Bom João, Olhão, Fuseta-A, Fuseta, Livramento, Luz, Tavira, Porta Nova, Conceição, Cacela, Castro Marim, Monte Gordo, Vila Real de Santo António.
What isn’t on it. Vila do Bispo municipality, which includes Sagres, has no railway [4]. Neither do Carvoeiro, Alvor, Aljezur or the west coast.
Frequency. East of Faro, trains leave Faro from 07:00 to 22:10, roughly hourly on weekdays. At weekends and on holidays some gaps stretch to two hours, because the 10:56, 12:56 and 19:56 run Monday to Friday only and the 08:56 does not run on Sundays and holidays [1]. West of Faro there are ten trains to Lagos on weekdays, nine on Saturdays and eight on Sundays and holidays, from 06:34 (08:36 on Sundays) to 20:40. The last train from Lagos towards Faro leaves at 20:22 [1]. Each departure carries a running-days code (daily, weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, and so on), so check the code before relying on a particular train [1].
Fares. Some sample Regional singles: Lagos–Portimão €2.30, Albufeira–Faro €3.80, Faro–Tavira €3.60, Lagos–Faro €8.30, Lagos–Vila Real de Santo António €11.85 [2]. The InterRegional costs slightly more [2].
For a month’s stay. CP sells one-month passes between two stations, for example Lagos–Faro at €187.50 or Faro–Tavira at €81.25 [2]. That is the number to compare against car hire if you will commute along the coast for work. If you are resident in Portugal, the nationwide Passe Ferroviário Verde is far cheaper: €20 for 30 days (€40 for 60, €60 for 90) on any Regional and InterRegional train, and on Intercidades in second class with a free advance seat reservation [28]. CP says it is for Portuguese citizens and foreigners resident in Portugal, loaded on a CP card; a short-stay visitor does not qualify, and we did not check what proof of residence a ticket office asks for [28].
Stations that are far from their towns
This catches people out. The station name is not the town centre:
- Albufeira-Ferreiras is in Ferreiras, almost 7 km from Albufeira’s centre according to Wikipedia [5]. OpenStreetMap routing makes it 6.7 km by road [6]. Local Giro buses 5 and 11 and taxis serve the station [5], but algarvebus.info notes that the buses are not timed to meet the trains [12].
- Loulé station is about 5 km from Loulé town, with a shuttle bus timed to the long-distance trains [7].
- Portimão station is north of the city, more than 1 km from the centre [8]. Praia da Rocha is a further bus or taxi ride.
- Silves station is 2.1 km from the town centre [9].
- Estômbar-Lagoa is under 3 km from Lagoa [10] and further still from Carvoeiro.
- Close to the centre: Faro (the bus station is about 150 m from the railway station), Olhão (about 150 m), Tavira and Lagos. At Lagos the bus station is about five minutes on foot, across the footbridge by the marina [12][23][14].
Vamus regional buses
Vamus operates the Algarve’s regional public bus network under a concession from AMAL, the region’s municipal association [15]. It runs the routes between towns, including the Aerobus (route 56) and the limited-stop Transrápido (route 57) between Faro and Lagos [11][15].
Tickets. At bus stations you usually buy at the ticket office or a Vamus machine before boarding. Elsewhere you pay the driver, and algarvebus.info says most Algarve buses don’t take contactless cards on board [11]. According to the same site, a prepaid rechargeable card (€3 for the card) or an account in the Vamus Algarve app cuts fares by about 30%, and monthly point-to-point season tickets save 50% [11].
Tourist passes. The same source lists 3-day passes at €35 and 7-day passes at €46, on consecutive days. They’re valid on all Vamus buses, including the Aerobus, but not on town buses or long-distance coaches [11]. We could not confirm these prices on vamusalgarve.pt, which did not load without JavaScript on 4 October 2026.
The app. The current “Vamus - Algarve” App Store listing promises route planning, real-time times and ticket purchase. When we read it on 4 October 2026 it had a 2.0/5 rating from four reviews, several of them saying it does not work [13]. Treat it as useful when it works, with a paper or PDF timetable as the backup.
When the buses run. On weekdays, intercity buses generally run from around 07:00 to 20:30. At weekends and on holidays service is “much reduced”, and many rural villages have no buses at all [11]. Timetables aren’t clock-face: buses don’t come at the same minutes past each hour [11]. This is the biggest practical limit of a car-free Algarve.
Sample fares (enthusiast site, full price on board) [11]: Faro–Lagos on the Transrápido €7.05, Albufeira–Portimão €6.15, Portimão–Lagos €5.80 (the train is €2.30), Tavira–Faro €5.80 (the train is €3.60). Where a train runs, it is usually cheaper unless you have a prepaid card [11].
Town buses: Próximo in Faro and others
Town buses are a separate system. Their tickets don’t work on Vamus, and Vamus tickets don’t work on them [11].
- Faro: Próximo. Operated by EVA for Faro city council. algarvebus.info reports contactless payment on all Próximo buses, tickets in an app and zone fares from €1.35 to €2.85 [12]. Route 16 links the bus station, the airport and Praia de Faro daily, one or two buses an hour from 06:00 to midnight. Route 14 runs to the airport and the beach at weekday peak times [12]. We could not read proximo.pt itself, so check the current fare there.
- Albufeira (Giro), Lagos, Portimão (Vai e Vem), Loulé, Olhão, Tavira all have their own town networks [11]. Outside summer, Albufeira’s Giro and the Lagos and Portimão town buses mostly stop around 20:00. The late-night Portimão–Alvor service runs only in July and August [11].
Coaches: FlixBus and Rede Expressos
- FlixBus lists Faro–Lagos from €3.48, fastest 1 h 30, boarding at Faro (Alfândega) [16]. It also lists a direct route from the airport stop to Lagos [17]. algarvebus.info warns that FlixBus may not use the main bus stations; in Albufeira and Portimão its stops are about 1.6 km from the centre [11].
- Rede Expressos is the national coach network to Lisbon and beyond. You can’t buy long-distance tickets from the driver, and these coaches don’t carry local passengers inside the Algarve, except on the Lagos–Aljezur road, where there is no other service [11]. Their website refused automated access on 4 October 2026, so fares and times are not verified here.
Bolt, Uber and taxis
Bolt has an Algarve page listing Economy, standard, XL and Van rides, plus a Child Seat category for children of about 2–6 years (10–30 kg) [18]. Uber publishes a Faro Airport pickup page [19]. Neither page says how many drivers work in Lagos, Tavira or Sagres, or at night, so availability outside Faro is not verified. We found no taxi tariff worth citing for Algarve routes.
Bikes: the Ecovia do Litoral
The Ecovia do Litoral is a 214 km cycle route along the south coast from Vila Real de Santo António to Cabo de São Vicente, part of EuroVelo 1 [20]. The regional tourism board is frank about it: parts are reserved for non-motorised traffic, others share roads and tracks, some sections use the busy EN125, and the terrain gets hillier towards the west [20]. On paper, that makes it good for shorter stretches and day rides, and not a safe default for small children. We did not verify whether CP regional trains take bikes, so check before planning a ride one way and the train back.
Ferries to the Ria Formosa islands
The barrier-island beaches of the eastern Algarve are reached by boat. Without a car, this is one of the easier parts of the trip.
- From Faro (Portas do Mar quay): Faro council publishes the Praia de Faro ferry timetable, currently for September–December 2026 [22]. algarvebus.info (checked 20 August 2026) gives €4.10 return for adults and €2.30 for children 5–11, the same as the operator’s timetable on the council site [12][22]. The service runs all year but not after dark: that timetable has ten departures from Faro from 25 October to 1 November and five from 2 November to 31 December, the first at 10:00 and the last at 15:30 [22]. It lists the Faro–Ilha do Farol ferry as running 1 May–31 October (€6.15 adult return) and Faro–Culatra only 1 June–31 August [12], but the council’s own October 2026 timetable still shows two Culatra boats a day from Faro (08:30 and 14:45, run only if there are passengers) and Farol boats to the end of October [22]; for November onwards we found no Faro timetable, so use the Olhão boats. Ilha Deserta is served by a private operator from Faro [26], whose fares we did not verify.
- From Olhão: ferries run all year to Armona, Culatra and Farol. Fares posted at the ticket offices in 2026 (as collected by Amo-te Olhão, updated 23 September 2026) are €2.20 one way or €4.40 return to Armona or Culatra and €2.50 or €5.00 to Farol, with children aged 4–10 paying about half [29]. An older reading from 2 May 2026 had €2.10 and €2.40 [23], so check the board at the pier. Armona has four winter departures from Olhão (08:30, 12:00, 15:00, 17:00), though the 15:00 doesn’t run every winter day [23].
- From Tavira: Silnido runs the ferry to Ilha de Tavira from the town pier (€2.70 adult return, children 4–11 €1.15, under-4s free) and from Quatro Águas (€2.00) [21]. The timetable from 7 September 2026 runs hourly from 09:30 to 18:30 [21].
Which bases work car-free
On paper, the bases that work best without a car are the ones on the railway with the station in town: Lagos, Faro, Olhão and Tavira. Portimão works if you accept a bus between the station and the beach. Albufeira works if you stay in town and treat the train as a day-trip tool, given the 6.7 km to the station. Sagres, Carvoeiro, Alvor and Aljezur depend on buses or a car.
The full comparison, including families, monthly stays and winter, is in where to stay in the Algarve. The town pages for Lagos, Tavira and Sagres cover each base in detail. Day-by-day plans without a car: Algarve itinerary.
For each kind of trip
- Nomads. A railway base plus a monthly CP pass (Lagos–Faro €187.50 [2], or the €20 Passe Ferroviário Verde if you are resident in Portugal [28]) covers the train between those stations only. The airport bus (Próximo 14/16) is a separate ticket [12]. Plan calls around the last trains and buses, around 20:00–20:40 [1][11].
- Workation (weeks to months). Live within walking distance of a station and a supermarket. Day trips along the line are cheap, and car hire for the odd weekend may cost less than a car for the whole stay. See car hire in the Algarve for when a car is worth it.
- Families. On CP trains, under-4s sharing a seat travel free and children 4–12 pay half, with official ID required [24]. For Vamus buses, algarvebus.info says children 4–12 pay half and under-4s are free, but the same page also says visiting children get no discount on the town networks, so treat bus discounts as unconfirmed [11]. Pushchair rules on buses were not documented anywhere we checked. One documented pushchair-friendly outing is Praia do Barril near Tavira, where the beach train has spaces for pushchairs [27]. Quick answers
Can you get around the Algarve without a car?
Along the south coast, yes. One railway runs the length of it from Lagos to Vila Real de Santo António, with direct trains end to end since 19 July 2026 [1][3], and Vamus regional buses fill most gaps [11]. It stops working well in the far west (Sagres, Aljezur and the west-coast beaches), at weekends on rural bus routes and after about 20:00.
Is there a train from Faro to Lagos?
Yes. Ten trains run direct from Faro to Lagos on weekdays (nine on Saturdays, eight on Sundays and holidays). Most are Regional trains taking about 1 h 35 for €8.30; the daily InterRegional takes 1 h 17 for €9.15 (CP timetable and fares valid from 19 July 2026, read 4 October 2026) [1][2]. The last train from Faro leaves at 20:40 [1]. A one-month Faro–Lagos pass costs €187.50; residents of Portugal can instead buy the nationwide Passe Ferroviário Verde at €20 for 30 days [2][28].
How do I get from Faro to Lagos by bus?
FlixBus lists Faro–Lagos coaches from €3.48 with a fastest time of 1 h 30 (route page read 1 October 2026) [16]. Vamus runs the limited-stop Transrápido (route 57) and the Aerobus (route 56) via the airport; an enthusiast timetable site gives €7.05 for the Transrápido and €11 for the Aerobus, which were not confirmed with the operator [12][11]. The Regional train costs €8.30 [2] and is quicker than the Transrápido, according to the same site [11].
How far is Albufeira train station from the town?
Albufeira-Ferreiras station is in Ferreiras, almost 7 km from the centre according to Wikipedia; OpenStreetMap routing makes it 6.7 km by road (4 October 2026) [5][6]. Local Giro buses 5 and 11 serve the station, but they are not timed to meet the trains [5][12]. Loulé station is similar, about 5 km from Loulé [7].
Do children pay on Algarve trains?
On CP trains, children up to and including 3 travel free if they share an adult's seat, and children aged 4 to 12 pay half fare with their own seat; an official ID showing their age is required (CP, read 4 October 2026) [24]. For Vamus buses, an enthusiast site says children 4–12 pay half and under-4s travel free, which was not confirmed with the operator [11].
Is there Uber or Bolt in the Algarve?
Bolt has an Algarve page listing ride categories including Economy, XL, Van and a Child Seat option for children aged about 2 to 6 (read 4 October 2026) [18], and Uber publishes a Faro Airport pickup page [19]. Neither page says how many drivers work outside Faro, so availability in small towns and at night is not verified.
