Lisbon with kidsthe city, the coast and calm beaches
Lisbon with children works as city plus coast: the Oceanário, zoo and science centre for city days, the calm town beaches in Cascais and Ericeira for sea days, and Sintra's Regaleira for older kids. Prices, hours, health contacts and which beaches to skip.

Short answer: plan Lisbon with kids as city days plus sea days. City days: the Oceanário and the science centre side by side in Parque das Nações, or the zoo. Sea days: the calm town beaches in Cascais by train, or Praia dos Pescadores in Ericeira. Keep the old town for a short morning, not a full day with a stroller.

Sources: oceanario.pt (re-read 26 Oct 2026), pavconhecimento.pt, zoo.pt (both read 9 Oct 2026), pt-Wikipedia. The Oceanário is cheapest in the late-afternoon slot (16:00–18:30). A single metro ticket is €1.90 [metrolisboa.pt].
The Oceanário and the science centre are about 200 m apart, so they make one indoor day in rain or heat. Castle, viewpoints, markets and more for the whole family: things to do in Lisbon.
Sea days
Cascais (train from Cais do Sodré, about 40 minutes): Praia da Conceição and Duquesa are a few minutes’ walk from the station and described as “suitable for children, as there are no waves or currents” [cascais-portugal.com, 2026]. Praia do Tamariz in Estoril has a seawater pool that the same guide calls great for young children. Bathing season 2026 at the Cascais beaches: 1 May–30 September [ABAE].
Ericeira (bus from Campo Grande): Praia dos Pescadores is sheltered and has “the calmest waters in town”; Foz do Lizandro has lifeguards and a Blue Flag 2026 on its sea beach; a tourist guide mentions calm river water at the southern end, but the river itself is not the listed bathing water, so we would not plan around it [ericeiraportugaltourism.com; ABAE]. Lifeguards in 2026: 13 June–13 September [ABAE].
Skip with small children: Praia do Guincho. Strong summer winds and powerful currents; en-Wikipedia says it is not suitable for swimming, particularly with young children. Great for watching kitesurfers from the top.
Closer to Lisbon, Santo Amaro de Oeiras is 23 minutes by train, gently sloping and Blue Flag 2026. All the options by train and bus, with 2026 lifeguard dates: best beaches near Lisbon.
The sea is cool all year: about 15 °C in February–March and just under 20 °C in September–October around Cascais and Ericeira [seatemperature.org, modelled].
Sintra with kids
Sintra is a day trip (train from Rossio). With school-age children, Quinta da Regaleira is the pick: grottoes, tunnels and the spiral well; tickets are timed [regaleira.pt]. At Pena, under-6s are free and the park-only family ticket (2 adults + 2 youths) is €40; palace tickets are for a fixed time, and private cars are not allowed at the top [parquesdesintra.pt]. With toddlers, choose one, not both. Prices, the train and a day plan: Sintra day trip from Lisbon. Other easy trips by train and bus: day trips from Lisbon.
Health and practical
- Emergency: 112. Health advice line SNS 24: 808 24 24 24 [sns24.gov.pt].
- Hospital de Dona Estefânia in Lisbon is the paediatric reference hospital for the south of Portugal and the islands; its services are planned to move to the new Hospital de Lisboa Oriental in 2027 [en- and pt-Wikipedia]. In September 2026 the heads of its paediatric emergency teams resigned over staffing (Público, 4 Sep 2026), so unless it is life-threatening call SNS 24 first: it tells you which emergency service to use. Check before you need it.

Childcare
We have not yet researched short-term childcare (kindergartens or babysitters that take children for a few weeks). International schools cluster around Cascais and Oeiras according to a 2026 expat guide, but that says nothing about short stays.
Where to stay with children
See where to stay on the Lisbon coast: Parque das Nações, Campo de Ourique or Estrela in the city, Cascais/Estoril on the train line, or Ericeira.

Quick answers
Is Lisbon good for kids?
Yes, with two caveats: the old town is steep and cobbled, and summer crowds are heavy. The big indoor sights (Oceanário, science centre, zoo) are on the metro, and calm beaches in Cascais are about 40 minutes away by train.
What is the best beach near Lisbon for small children?
The Cascais town beaches (Conceição and Duquesa), usually sheltered (a local guide says no waves or currents) and a short walk from the train station; in Ericeira, Praia dos Pescadores. Skip Praia do Guincho with small children: strong wind and currents.
How much does the Lisbon Oceanarium cost for children?
Children 3–12 pay €15.50 to €17.70 depending on the time slot, adults €25.50 to €29.90 and 65+ €17.70 to €19.90; children up to 2 are free. It is open daily 10:00–20:00, last entry 19:00 (oceanario.pt, re-read 26 October 2026).
Where is the children's hospital in Lisbon?
Hospital de Dona Estefânia is Lisbon's paediatric reference hospital for the south of Portugal and the islands. In an emergency call 112; for health advice, the SNS 24 line is 808 24 24 24.
