Surfing in Ericeirawhich beach for which level, and when

When to go, by level
A local surf school gives this split [Ericeira Surf House]:
- Complete beginners: all year; there is usually a beach with suitable waves.
- Advanced beginners: May–September, when waves are smaller and more forgiving.
- Beginning intermediates: June–September; advanced intermediates: spring and autumn, plus small winter days.
- Advanced: September–April; summer is often too small.
The water is cool: about 15 °C in February–March and just under 20 °C in September–October (seatemperature.org, modelled). Lifeguards at the ABAE-listed Ericeira beaches: 13 June–13 September 2026 [ABAE].

Quick answers
Is Ericeira good for beginner surfers?
Yes. Most famous breaks are over rock, but the beaches south of town, Foz do Lizandro and São Julião, are sandy beach breaks that local schools describe as perfect for beginners, and Praia do Sul works for beginners when conditions are right.
When is the best time to surf in Ericeira?
It depends on your level. A local surf school says complete beginners can find waves all year, advanced beginners do best May–September when waves are smaller, and advanced surfers September–April.
What is the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve?
A designation by Save The Waves Coalition, dedicated in October 2011 as the second World Surfing Reserve worldwide. It covers about 5 km of coast with breaks from beach breaks to powerful reefs, including Ribeira d'Ilhas and Coxos.
