The notes

A private museum in the Zona Velha, next to the lower station of the cable car to Monte, that tells Madeira’s history in eight themed rooms, from the volcanic origins and the legends of discovery to pirate attacks and seaplanes. Visit Madeira describes it as interactive, about 1.5 hours and suitable for all ages; the museum’s own site and Visit Funchal say about 45 minutes. Its own site lists a normal ticket at €5 and a junior ticket at €3, without saying which ages count as junior. There is a rooftop restaurant and a craft shop.

What the sources say (research)

  • Interactive visit of about 1.5 hours with historical objects and multimedia; “suitable for all ages”. Lift, access ramps and adapted toilets. [visitmadeira.com, 10 Oct 2026]
  • Visit Portugal distinguishes exhibition hours (10:00–18:00) from shop hours (10:00–19:00), which explains part of the difference: Visit Madeira also says 10:00–18:00 for the museum, while Visit Funchal lists 10:00–19:00 for the venue. The museum’s own site says 09:00–19:00, but its footer still says © 2016. Plan for 10:00–18:00 and confirm before you go. Closed 25 December according to both tourism boards.
