Town · Madeira, Portugal, Europe
Madeira's capital and the island's easiest base without a car: buses to most of the south coast, three coworking spaces from €15 a day, seawater pool complexes instead of sand beaches, and a steep city that rises from the bay. Research draft, not first-hand.
For nomads and workations

Prices and speed are crowd-sourced or one operator's figure, not our measurement. Each café card says where its Wi-Fi claim comes from.

When to go
Same rule as the Madeira hub (IPMA 1991–2020 Funchal normal, mean max ≥ 21 °C and ≤ 5 rain days): April–September. Funchal is the IPMA station, so here the figures are local: highs from 19.9 °C (Feb) to 26.8 °C (Aug), 574.3 mm of rain a year, 91.2 mm in October. Not experience..

Where to stay
Typical rent€1,336 / month1-bedroom flat in the centre. Crowd-sourced figure, treat it as an order of magnitude.
Most walkable, next to the Monte cable car, buses and tour pick-ups; loud on weekend evenings and the town beach is pebbly (Pico and Poncha, modified 6 Oct 2026; The Road Reel, Apr 2026; Chifbay, Jul 2026). Research.
The flat, practical centre with less character; best for boat-trip departures (Musafir in Transit, Apr 2026; Chifbay, Jul 2026). New short-term rental registrations are banned in Sé since June 2026; existing ones continue. Research.
Flatter than most of Funchal, near the Lido and Ponta Gorda pools and Praia Formosa; resort-like and 'lacks character', 10–15 min by often-full bus to the old town (Pico and Poncha; Chifbay; The Road Reel, 2026). Sangha Cowork is here. Research.
Cheaper, more local, views over the bay; hills are the catch, 10–30 min walk to the centre (Pico and Poncha; The Road Reel, 2026). Research.
About 550 m above the old town, cooler and sometimes in cloud; daily commute by cable car or bus (Pico and Poncha; The Road Reel, 2026). Research.

In detail
Funchal is Madeira’s capital and the base that works best without a car: the airport bus, the city buses and most island lines start here. For a longer stay, pick the neighbourhood by how much climbing you can face. The seafront, the marina and the Lido are flat; almost everything else goes uphill.
For sand, Funchal’s pools against the rest of the island and Porto Santo: best beaches in Madeira.

It's the only town on Madeira with several coworking spaces: Sangha Cowork and Cowork Funchal charge €15 a day + VAT, and the community hub Madeira Friends has a €25-a-month pack. The local nomad community is run by Madeira Friends, a partner of the regional Digital Nomads Madeira Islands project. Ponta do Sol has the free workspace but far fewer services.
Not a sandy one. Funchal's swimming is in seawater pool complexes (Lido, Ponta Gorda) and on pebble and black-sand beaches such as Praia Formosa, about 2 km long. The nearest imported-sand beaches are at Machico and Calheta.
Aerobus line 500, €6.70 on board or €5.55 on a GIRO card (2026), roughly every 30–60 minutes from 08:30 to 22:00 (a two-hour gap around midday at weekends); about 24 minutes to Avenida do Mar. Or take a taxi from the arrivals rank; ask for the current fare before you go.
Yes. The seafront, the marina and the Lido area are flat; most residential streets, the old town's cobbles and anything towards Monte climb steeply. Check the gradient before booking a flat, especially with a pushchair.
