The short answer: Funchal for services, Ponta do Sol for the community. Funchal, a municipality of about 106,000, has coworking spaces with day passes, buses to most of the island and the main hospital [3][4][10][18]. Ponta do Sol, a municipality of 8,360 people, has the free Digital Nomad Village workspace and weekly meet-ups, which the project says are still running in 2026 [1][18]. Ponta do Sol is about 27 minutes from Funchal by car on a routing model [7]. For a bus-based stay, check your actual journeys before booking: the 2023 locality timetable is not proof of today’s frequency or connections [5].

Side by side

Ponta do Sol Funchal
Workspace Free nomad workspace, 09:00–18:00 (days not stated) [1] Coworking from €15 a day + VAT; Madeira Friends Hub €25 a month + VAT [3][4][19]
Community Village events: Wednesday lunch, “Purple Friday” [1] Madeira Friends runs the Funchal community [2]
Getting around Check the exact bus journeys for your plans; current frequency and transfers unverified [5] Aerobus, city buses and the regional network centred on Funchal [21]
Healthcare Health centre weekdays, no urgent service listed [9] Central public hospital, private hospitals [10]
Swimming Small pebble beach, lifeguards 10 Jun–14 Sep 2026 [11] Lido and Ponta Gorda pools, Praia Formosa [12]
Rent data No idealista index (too few listings) [8] €16.8 per m², Sep 2026 [8]
Tourist tax €2/night, max 7, under-13s exempt [14] €2/night, max 7, 12 and under exempt [13]
Evenings “Quiet ordinary evenings” (coliving operator) [17] Broader choice of restaurants, services and nightlife [17]

For either base, Madeira’s health line is SRS24, 800 24 24 20, not the mainland SNS 24 [20]. Fees, EHIC and hospitals: healthcare in Portugal for travellers.

Choose Ponta do Sol if

  • you want the free desk and a ready-made community from day one [1];
  • you’ll rent a car, or you’re happy to stay local most days [15][16];
  • sun matters more than choice: both 2026 guides we read describe it as sunny, one as “one of the sunniest spots on the island” [15][16].

Choose Funchal if

  • you need a reliable paid desk, phone booths or a fixed desk [3][4];
  • you won’t have a car, or you want the airport bus at the door [6];
  • you’re travelling with children and want pools, a hospital and playgrounds nearby [10][12].

Or split the month

A common pattern in the guides is one base with day trips or a split stay [16]. Two weeks in each lets you use Funchal’s buses and services, then the village. Book the Ponta do Sol half with a car.

More detail: Ponta do Sol, Funchal, working remotely from Madeira, Madeira without a car, monthly rentals in Madeira. Both councils’ tourist tax next to the mainland: tourist tax in Portugal.

Checking the bus journey

Rodoeste’s February 2023 locality PDF lists direct and connecting options, including shared onward buses in Ribeira Brava. Do not treat its departure rows as a current count of through buses, or assume a transfer is guaranteed [5]. Check your date, stop, both legs and return in SIGA. In the line 80 PDF checked on 12 October 2026, one direct example is Funchal 10:00 → Ponta do Sol about 11:05; it is not a general journey time or frequency for the route [22].

The line 80 PDF excludes 25 December. The older locality PDF additionally excludes that service on 26 December and 1 January; confirm those dates with SIGA [5][22].

Quick answers

Should I stay in Ponta do Sol or Funchal?

Funchal if you want coworking spaces with day passes, buses to most of the island, hospitals and plenty of restaurants, without a car. Ponta do Sol if you want the free nomad workspace, the weekly community events and a quiet, sunny small town, and you'll have a car or accept slow buses.

How far is Ponta do Sol from Funchal?

About 24 km by road, roughly 27 minutes by car on the routing model. For buses, check SIGA for the current fare, exact stop and both directions. The 2023 locality PDF mixes direct and connecting journeys; we have not verified a current frequency, general journey time or guaranteed transfer. Christmas and New Year exceptions need checking against the individual route.

Is Ponta do Sol cheaper than Funchal?

We couldn't measure it: idealista publishes no rent index for Ponta do Sol (too few listings), while Funchal's asking rent was €16.8 per m² in September 2026. Both councils charge the same tourist tax, €2 per person per night for up to 7 nights.
