Working remotely from Madeira in 2026the nomad village, coworking and costs
Is Madeira's Digital Nomad Village still running? Yes, says the project (August 2026). The free Ponta do Sol workspace, Funchal's coworking spaces and prices, the community by town, internet, rents, time zone and the visa, each with a source and a date.

Checked on 9 October 2026. Prices are the operators’ own, before 22% VAT. The nomad village’s status is what the project says about itself.
The short answer: Madeira’s Digital Nomad Village is still running in 2026, by the project’s own account, and it has grown beyond Ponta do Sol. The page for Ponta do Sol, modified on 19 August 2026, says the village “is still active, with a free working space, events, access to the community” [2]. The project now also has community managers in Funchal, Machico, Santa Cruz and Porto Santo [3]. For paid desks and the most services, base yourself in Funchal, where day passes cost €15 + VAT [7][8]. For the free desk and a village routine, Ponta do Sol, with a car or patience for buses.
Ponta do Sol: the free workspace
The project began on 1 February 2021 in Ponta do Sol [2]. The free workspace is in the John dos Passos cultural centre: internet, desks, desktop computers and a local host, open 09:00–18:00 [2]. The official page doesn’t say which days. A June 2026 blog says weekdays only [6]. At launch it was open 8am–10pm, so expect shorter hours than old articles say.
Getting in: register through the free online form on the project site. That also gives access to the Slack and WhatsApp groups, event invitations and lists of private workspaces and accommodation [1].
The weekly rhythm, as the organisers describe it: a community lunch on Wednesdays and “Purple Friday” drinks at the Estalagem da Ponta do Sol, with tickets released on Eventbrite every Tuesday [2]. The project also ran the Nomad Island Fest, fifth edition from 4 to 10 December 2025 [4]. We found no confirmed 2026 date.
Funchal: coworking spaces with prices

All prices before 22% VAT, as published on 9 October 2026.
Cafés for a laptop day
No Funchal café publishes a laptop policy, so this list rests on what third parties report. A coliving operator’s June 2026 guide warns that some cafés “fill up at lunch and politely nudge laptop people out” and suggests avoiding 12:30–14:30 [25]. Check before you go: hours and tolerance change, and speed tests are single readings.
| Café | Area | What the sources say | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loja do Chá | Centre, Rua do Sabão | Laptop-friendly, 3-hour sessions comfortable [23]; laptops fine, Wi-Fi works inside [12] | Weak Wi-Fi outside; busy at midday |
| Art Food Corner | Centre and Forum Madeira | Brought laptops [12]; Forum branch tagged Laptop Friendly [21] | Closes 17:00, earlier Sundays |
| Motya Coffee Shop | Rua João Tavira | Free Wi-Fi, Laptop Friendly [21]; rated quiet [22] | No socket data |
| Prima Caju | Centre, Rua do Surdo | Laptop-friendly in quiet hours [12]; one test 157 Mbps [24] | Not at lunch |
| Jacafé | Rua dos Ferreiros | Laptop-friendly [12][22] | Hours unconfirmed |
| Land Food & Coffee | Monte, by the cable car | “Bring your laptop” [12]; one test 108 Mbps [24] | 09:30–17:30; tourist groups |
| The Studio.Coffee | Rua João Tavira | Wi-Fi good, quiet [22]; 07:00–19:00 daily [21] | One source on working |
| Beanup Coffee & Brunch | Marina | Tagged Free Wi-Fi, Laptop Friendly [21] | One source; evenings are a bar crowd |
| Gato Legal Coffee Roastery | Ponta do Pargo (Calheta) | Tagged Free Wi-Fi, Laptop Friendly [21] | One source; closed Tuesdays |
The same blog calls Maia Coffee Shop short on room for laptops and Boutique Café Lido “not the best cafe for working” [12]. One crowd-sourced test at Magic Tea House showed 4.3 Mbps [24]. In Ponta do Sol and Calheta town we found no café with dated evidence of laptop work; use the free workspace instead.
Machico, Santa Cruz and colivings
- Machico: an official location of the project, run by Remote East Coasters, which advertises a coworking space in Água de Pena and a coliving near Machico without prices [3].
- Santa Cruz: Homeoffice Madeira, a coliving in Santo António da Serra in the hills, claims 350 Mbps up and down [11]. Operator claim.
- Colivings listed by the project: Casa do Pico in Funchal, A Ver o Mar (Funchal and Santa Cruz), The Luzia House (Funchal, coliving outside July–September) and Nomadico in Jardim do Mar on the west coast [5]. No prices on the list.
Internet and phone
- nomads.com shows a crowd-sourced average of 44 Mbps for Madeira (page updated 9 October 2026) [13]. We found no measured figure. Ask your host for a speed test screenshot before booking.
- MEO lists Madeira and Porto Santo among its 5G areas (undated page) [18]. We found no source on coverage in the north or the mountains, so don’t plan calls from a levada.
- For eSIM options, see eSIM for Portugal.
What it costs
- Desk: coworking from €15 a day, or free at the Ponta do Sol workspace; the prices are in the sections above, all before 22% VAT.
- Coffee and lunch: Numbeo, Funchal: cappuccino €1.76, inexpensive meal €13.50 [14]. Low confidence.
- All-in: nomads.com estimates $2,470 a month for a nomad [13]. The same page lists a $533 one-bedroom rent that doesn’t fit idealista’s figures, so we treat it as rough.
- Rent: idealista’s asking rent for Funchal was €16.8 per m² in September 2026 [15]. Platforms, furnished monthly lets, contracts, deposits and the 2026 holiday-let freeze in central Funchal are in monthly rentals in Madeira.
Ponta do Sol or Funchal?
Funchal for services, buses and coworking; Ponta do Sol for the free desk and the village. Rodoeste’s February 2023 locality PDF mixes direct services with transfers in Ribeira Brava, including shared onward buses. It does not establish today’s frequency, general journey time or guaranteed connections [19]. Check the current fare, exact stop, both legs and return with SIGA before planning a commute. The full comparison: Funchal or Ponta do Sol as a base.
The line 80 PDF checked on 12 October 2026 shows one direct example, Funchal 10:00 → Ponta do Sol about 11:05, except 25 December. This is a selected service, not the full timetable. The 2023 locality PDF additionally excludes line 80 on 26 December and 1 January, so confirm those dates with SIGA [19][26].
Visa, time zone, insurance
- Time zone: Atlantic/Madeira matches Lisbon and London all year, UTC+0 in winter and UTC+1 in summer [17].
- Visa: Madeira is Portugal; the remote-work visa is the same. See Portugal’s digital nomad visa. Without it, non-EU citizens count their days under the Schengen 90/180 rule.
- Insurance and paying: insurance for digital nomads, paying in Portugal. Madeira’s own health line and hospitals, and what the EHIC covers: healthcare in Portugal for travellers.
- Getting here: flights to Madeira; for winter, how Madeira compares: Madeira or the Canary Islands.

Travel insurance for long stays
A European health card (EHIC, or the UK’s GHIC) covers state healthcare, not everything. For a long stay, check whether a policy covers you for the whole trip, pre-existing conditions, and sports like surfing. We don’t sell or recommend specific policies.

Quick answers
Is the Madeira Digital Nomad Village still active in 2026?
According to the organisers, yes. The Digital Nomads Madeira Islands page for Ponta do Sol, last modified on 19 August 2026, says 'The Nomad Village is still active, with a free working space, events, access to the community'. We found no closure or rebrand news. The project, run by Startup Madeira with the regional government, began on 1 February 2021.
Is the coworking in Ponta do Sol free?
Yes. The workspace at the John dos Passos cultural centre is listed as free, with internet, desks, desktop computers and a local host, 09:00–18:00. Register through the project's online form first. The official page doesn't give opening days; one June 2026 blog says weekdays only.
How much is coworking in Funchal?
On the operators' own sites (October 2026): Sangha Cowork €15 a day, €70 a week, €150 a month for a hot desk; Cowork Funchal €15 a day and €160 a month for a fixed desk; Madeira Friends Hub €25 a month. All prices are before 22% VAT.
Do I need a visa to work remotely from Madeira?
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens don't. Others staying beyond a short visit look at Portugal's remote-work residence visa, which covers Madeira like the rest of the country. The income threshold, documents and fees are in our Portugal digital nomad visa guide.
What time zone is Madeira in for remote work?
The same as Lisbon and London all year: UTC+0 in winter and UTC+1 in summer, switching on the same dates (29 March and 25 October in 2026). For US East Coast clients that's usually 5 hours ahead (4 for a few weeks a year, because the US changes clocks on different dates); for Central Europe 1 hour behind.
