Region · Portugal, Europe
Portugal's Atlantic island region, 801 km² and 11 municipalities, with Funchal as capital. Mild all year on the sunny south coast, home of Europe's best-known digital nomad community in Ponta do Sol, and a levada network for walking. Research draft, not first-hand.
When to go
Derived, not experience: months whose IPMA 1991–2020 normal for Funchal (station 522, 58 m) has mean daily max ≥ 21 °C and ≤ 5 rain days (≥ 1 mm), the author's selection rule: Apr 21.0 °C/4.7 d, May 22.0/3.3, Jun 23.7/1.0, Jul 25.4/0.3, Aug 26.8/0.4, Sep 26.6/3.1. October (25.2 °C) fails on 7.0 rain days; January still averages 20.0 °C. Funchal is the only mainland-island station IPMA publishes; the north coast and the mountains are far wetter (2,500–2,800 mm a year at the summits vs 300–700 mm on the south slope, 2019 study). Bed occupancy peaked in August 2025 (77.3%) and was lowest in December and January (52–54%, DREM)..

Towns

Hotel and residential town between Funchal and the airport, above the Garajau marine reserve: the Cristo Rei statue, a cable car down to a diving beach, lido pools with a children's pool and the Blue Flag Reis Magos beach. Quieter than Funchal, easier with a car. Research draft.

Madeira's capital and the island's easiest base without a car: buses to most of the south coast, three coworking spaces from €15 a day, seawater pool complexes instead of sand beaches, and a steep city that rises from the bay. Research draft, not first-hand.

Bay town on Madeira's east coast beside the airport, where the first settlers landed in 1419: an imported-sand beach, the Prainha and São Lourenço peninsula nearby, direct buses to Funchal and its own nomad community. Research draft.

Small town on Madeira's sunny south-west coast where the Digital Nomad Village began in 2021 and, by the project's own account, is still active in 2026: a free workspace, weekly meet-ups, a pebble beach and a car-friendly rather than bus-friendly location. Research draft.

Village on Madeira's north-west tip, known for its lava-rock natural pools, with a small aquarium, a laurel-forest exhibition, free pools and Seixal's black-sand beach nearby. About an hour's drive from Funchal, or a long direct bus ride. Mostly a day trip. Research draft.

Madeira's second inhabited island, 50 km north-east: a 9 km golden-sand beach with three Blue Flag bathing waters, a small capital (Vila Baleira) and a quiet pace. Drier than Funchal but less sunny in winter. By ferry (2 h 15, currently 3 h 15) or a 15-minute flight. Research draft.
In detail
Madeira is Portugal’s Atlantic island region, about 805 km from mainland Portugal and 520 km from Africa, with Funchal as its capital. For a long stay it splits in two: the south coast (Funchal, Câmara de Lobos, Ponta do Sol, Calheta), which is sunnier and drier, and the north and the mountains, which are greener, wetter and harder to reach without a car. Most people working remotely here pick Funchal for the services or Ponta do Sol for the nomad community.
| Town | Coast | In one line | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Funchal | South | The capital: coworking spaces, buses everywhere, seawater pools instead of sand | Funchal |
| Ponta do Sol | South-west | Small sunny town with the free Digital Nomad Village workspace; car helps | Ponta do Sol |
| Calheta | West | Madeira’s first artificial sand beach and a marina; one fast direct bus a day from Funchal (10:00), slower afternoon buses | Calheta |
| Machico | East | Golden-sand bay next to the airport, on the east-side bus lines | Machico |
| Caniço and Garajau | South-east | Quieter hotel town above a marine reserve, lido pools; easier with a car | Caniço |
| Porto Moniz | North-west | Lava-rock natural pools; mostly a day trip, two direct buses a day | Porto Moniz |
| Porto Santo | Second island | 9 km sand beach, ferry or 15-minute flight | Porto Santo |

Yes, according to the project itself. The Digital Nomads Madeira Islands page, updated in August 2026, says the Nomad Village in Ponta do Sol 'is still active, with a free working space, events, access to the community'. The free workspace at the John dos Passos cultural centre is listed as open 09:00–18:00; registration is a free online form.
Not if you stay in Funchal: buses cover the city, Monte, the airport and the south-east, at €2.05–2.65 a trip in 2026. For Ponta do Sol, Calheta, the north-west and the mountain trailheads (Rabaçal, Fanal), a car or tours are the realistic choice (Pico do Areeiro has a twice-daily €3 bus from Funchal); Calheta has a fast direct bus (line 80, 10:00) plus slower direct buses at 16:05 daily and 17:40 on weekdays (lines 115 and 142), and Porto Moniz two (one via Calheta, one via São Vicente).
Mild all year on the south coast. In Funchal, IPMA's 1991–2020 normals give mean daily highs from 19.9 °C in February to 26.8 °C in August, and 574 mm of rain a year, most of it from October to March. The north slope and the mountains get several times as much rain.
It can be, with caveats: beaches are mostly pebble or man-made sand (Calheta, Machico), so families use the seawater pool complexes in Funchal and the lava pools at Porto Moniz, and many levadas have drops or tunnels. Children 12 and under walk the paid trails for free but must be booked. Our family guide lists the easy walks.
The same as Lisbon and London: WET (UTC+0) in winter and WEST (UTC+1) in summer, with the same change dates.
