In detail
Machico is the east-coast base: right by the airport, with one of Madeira’s few sandy beaches and the São Lourenço peninsula 15 minutes away. It’s a town where people live rather than a resort, and it has its own branch of the island’s nomad community.
SIGA still labels the route 23 (current) / 701 (new) on its Machico page; look for both numbers. In the PDF linked there, checked on 11 October 2026, line 23 has these departures [14][15]:
| Day | Funchal → Machico | Machico → Funchal |
|---|---|---|
| Monday–Friday, excluding public holidays | 08:30, 10:30, 16:20 | 07:30, 09:30, 15:20 |
| Saturdays | 09:00, 16:45, 17:30, 19:45 | 08:00, 15:45, 16:30, 18:45 |
The Saturday 14:25 departure from Machico ends in Santa Cruz, so it is not an additional through bus to Funchal. The PDF has no Sunday or holiday timetable and excludes 25 December. This does not establish that Machico is unreachable by bus on Sundays or public holidays. Its school-calendar notes are for 2024, so confirm the current departures with SIGA before relying on them [15]. The separate Expresso service has more weekday departures; see Madeira without a car.
It's the next town north of the airport; Funchal is about 22 km and 23 minutes away by car on the routing model. Machico is on CAM's east-side bus lines to Funchal (line 23, new 701, and an express); check the current fare. The linked line 23 PDF lists three departures each way on Monday–Friday excluding public holidays; on Saturdays it lists four from Funchal and four through to Funchal from Machico, plus one Machico departure ending in Santa Cruz. The PDF excludes 25 December; its notes still refer to 2024, so check SIGA for your date.
Yes. Visit Madeira describes Machico bay as having a pebble beach and a beach of imported yellow sand. The official bathing water with the 2026 Blue Flag is Banda d'Além, lifeguarded from 16 June to 27 September.
The regional Digital Nomads Madeira Islands project lists Machico as one of its official locations, run by a group called Remote East Coasters, which also advertises a coworking space in Água de Pena and a coliving near Machico. Neither has published prices.
