Madeira or the Azoresweather, flights, costs and which suits your trip
Madeira is warmer and much drier, with more flights and a nomad scene; it is the better winter choice. The Azores (São Miguel) are greener, wetter and cooler, with hot springs and crater lakes, and are best from June to September. IPMA data side by side, with sources.

Checked on 9 October 2026. Weather is a 30-year average for the two capitals, not a forecast. Both islands are wetter and cooler in the hills.
Short answer: go to Madeira for winter, for sun, for remote work with an organised community and for the widest choice of direct flights. Go to the Azores (São Miguel) for crater lakes, hot springs and green walking, ideally June to September, and accept rain in any month. On the numbers, Funchal gets about 53 rain days a year and Ponta Delgada about 122 [1][2]. Everything on the Azores side is São Miguel; island-hopping, Terceira and the western islands are a different trip we haven’t covered.
Pick Madeira if…
- You travel between October and April. From October to April Funchal averages highs of 19.9–25.2 °C and 4.7–8.6 rain days a month; Ponta Delgada 17.4–22.6 °C and 10.2–15.0 rain days [1][2].
- You want to work. The Digital Nomad Village in Ponta do Sol runs a free workspace [20]; Funchal has paid coworking from €15 + VAT a day [21]. See working remotely from Madeira.
- Flights matter. Twice as many airports fly direct to Funchal as to Ponta Delgada [7][8], and the low-cost choice to the Azores shrank when Ryanair left in March 2026 [9].
- You keep UK hours. Madeira is on Lisbon and London time; the Azores are an hour behind [13].
Pick the Azores if…
- Nature beats sunshine. Crater lakes, tea fields, hot springs you can bathe in all year. See Azores hot springs.
- You are coming in summer. July is Ponta Delgada’s driest month (4.8 rain days) and the sea reaches 23.3 °C in August [2][29]. See the best time to visit the Azores.
- You want lower rents. idealista’s asking rent was €12.2 per m² in Ponta Delgada against €16.8 in Funchal in September 2026 [16][17].

Air: IPMA climate normals 1991–2020 for Funchal/Observatório and Ponta Delgada/Observatório Afonso Chaves [1][2]. Sea: NOAA OISST v2.1 offshore surface temperatures, 2001–2020, calculated and checked on 11 October 2026 (Funchal 32.625° N, 16.875° W [28]; Ponta Delgada 37.625° N, 25.625° W [29]). We average daily values within each month and year, then give each of the 20 annual monthly means equal weight. These 0.25° grid cells are coastal proxies, not measurements at individual beaches or a forecast.
Both get wetter as you climb. On Madeira the central highlands get 2,500–2,800 mm of rain a year against 300–700 mm on the south slope [6]. On São Miguel rainfall rises by about 196 mm a year for every 100 m [5], so Furnas and the crater lakes are wetter and cooler than Ponta Delgada. The table shows each capital’s coastal station, the drier end of each island.

Flights and getting around
- Madeira: 68 airports with direct flights in October 2026, mostly easyJet, Jet2 and Ryanair [7]. The airport is known for wind closures: a 2025 study found about 70,000 passengers a year affected by bad weather between 2010 and 2023 [12]. Leave a spare day before an onward connection.
- Azores: 31 airports with direct flights to Ponta Delgada [8]. Ryanair closed all its Azores routes from 29 March 2026 [9]; Azores Airlines says it will add mainland flights for winter 2026/27 [10]. Many visitors connect through Lisbon or Porto.
- On the island: both work without a car in the main town, and both need a car or a tour for the remote viewpoints. See Madeira without a car and São Miguel without a car.
With children
- Madeira: pools rather than beaches; sand is rare, and Calheta’s sandy beach is imported sand [26]. Short levadas and Funchal’s gardens. See Madeira with kids.
- Azores: warm-water hot springs, with child prices or free entry at several, plus parks and a museum in Ponta Delgada. See the Azores with kids.
- In both, the sea is under 20 °C from December to May [28][29].
Doing both
There is no ferry; you fly via Lisbon or on the occasional direct island-to-island flight, which we have not checked for 2026–27. Most people pick one per trip.

Quick answers
Which is better, Madeira or the Azores?
For winter sun, remote work and easy flights, Madeira. For green landscapes, hot springs and a quieter island in summer, the Azores. Funchal averages 53 rain days a year (≥ 1 mm) and Ponta Delgada 122 (IPMA 1991–2020); in January Funchal's average high is 20.0 °C against 17.5 °C in Ponta Delgada.
Madeira or the Azores in winter?
Madeira. From December to February Funchal averages highs of 19.9–21.0 °C and 5.5–8.6 rain days a month; Ponta Delgada 17.4–18.3 °C and 10.8–15.0 rain days (IPMA 1991–2020). The Azores in winter suit hot springs and quiet roads, not sun.
Madeira or the Azores in summer?
Both work. Ponta Delgada's driest months are July (4.8 rain days) and August (6.5), with highs of 24.7–26.0 °C and a sea around 22–23 °C; Funchal is a little warmer and almost rainless (0.3–0.4 rain days) with a similar sea. Summer is when the Azores are at their best.
Is it easier to fly to Madeira or the Azores?
Madeira. FlightConnections listed 68 airports with direct flights to Funchal in October 2026 against 31 to Ponta Delgada, and Ryanair stopped all Azores flights from 29 March 2026. From mainland Portugal both are short hops: Lisbon to Funchal is about 965 km, Lisbon to Ponta Delgada about 1,450 km.
Are the Azores and Madeira in the same time zone?
No. Madeira keeps Lisbon and London time (UTC+0 in winter). The Azores are one hour behind (UTC−1 in winter, UTC+0 in summer). For a UK or European working day, that hour matters.
