São Miguel without a carthe new 2026 AzoresBus network, day trips by bus, and when you need wheels
Getting around São Miguel without a car since AzoresBus took over the island bus network on 1 September 2026: day passes from €7, which day trips work by bus (Furnas, Vila Franca, Ribeira Grande, weekend Sete Cidades), the airport, the town minibus, and where a car or tour is the realistic option.

The network changed on 1 September 2026. One operator, AzoresBus (Vale do Ave Açores), now runs São Miguel’s island-wide public bus network under a 10-year concession (Ponta Delgada’s town MiniBus is separate), replacing the three companies most guides still describe [1]. Line numbers, stops and fares in older blog posts may be wrong. Everything below was read from the operator’s own timetables and tariff on 9 October 2026 [3][7].
The short answer: base yourself in Ponta Delgada and you can do without a car for daily life and about half the classic day trips. Furnas, Vila Franca, Lagoa and Ribeira Grande have direct buses every day; Sete Cidades works as a bus day trip at weekends. For Lagoa do Fogo, Ferraria and the north-east, hire a car for a day or take a tour.

The airport
João Paulo II airport is less than 3 km from central Ponta Delgada, and the operator’s public transport page lists taxis only [15]. No AzoresBus line stops at the terminal itself; the nearest stop is “Antiga Aerogare” at the old terminal, a walk of about 1.6 km. Taxi prices, the bus times from that stop and the connections to Furnas and Ribeira Grande are in Ponta Delgada airport to the city.
Where you’ll want a car (or a tour)
- Lagoa do Fogo: no regular bus. In August–September and at Easter the road is closed to private cars and an €8 shuttle runs from the Caldeira Velha and Casa da Água car parks; outside those dates you drive up yourself [16].
- Sete Cidades on a weekday, and the viewpoints above the crater (Vista do Rei is 24 minutes’ drive from Ponta Delgada) [17].
- Ponta da Ferraria (34 minutes’ drive) and the north-east around Nordeste [18].
- Stopping wherever the clouds lift. On an island where the weather changes by the hour, a car lets you go where it’s clear.

Quick answers
Can you visit São Miguel without a car?
Partly. From a base in Ponta Delgada, buses reach Furnas, Vila Franca do Campo, Lagoa, Ribeira Grande and the Sete Cidades village directly. Lagoa do Fogo (by car outside the summer shuttle), Ponta da Ferraria and most north-east viewpoints have no practical bus, so plan a tour or a day's car hire for those.
How much is the bus on São Miguel?
AzoresBus sells network passes valid from first use: €7 for 24 hours, €12 for 48, €16 for 72 and €25 for 120 hours, plus €2 for the card. Single tickets are bought from the driver and priced by distance; the operator publishes the 10-trip card instead (10% off), which works out to €0.95 a trip for 0–5 km and €5.72 for 76–80 km; the on-board single is about 10% more (our estimate, roughly €1.05 to €6.35). Children under 4 travel free without a seat; ages 4–11 pay half on board.
Is there a bus from Ponta Delgada airport?
Not to the terminal. The airport operator lists only taxis, and no AzoresBus line stops at the terminal in October 2026; the nearest stop, Antiga Aerogare at the old terminal, is about 1.6 km on foot. Details, times and taxi prices: our Ponta Delgada airport to the city guide.
Can you go to Furnas by bus?
Yes. Line 318 runs along the south coast every day in about 1 h 30 (from Ponta Delgada on weekdays at 09:00, 13:45, 16:00 and early evening; at weekends at 09:00 and 15:00 all year, with extra runs from June to September), and line 110 takes the north coast twice a day (07:15 and 15:15). A day trip on the 09:00 works on the October 2026 timetables, back on the 16:18 on weekdays, the 17:17 at weekends or the 17:10 on line 110.
Can you get to Sete Cidades by bus?
At weekends, yes: line 208 leaves Ponta Delgada at 07:15 on Saturdays (back 16:25) and 08:30 on Sundays (back 18:05). On weekdays the morning bus (line 205) arrives at 09:45; for the return, the line 206 timetable shows a 17:15 from Sete Cidades as far as the Ramal Mosteiros junction (17:35); from the same stop line 206 leaves at 17:45 (Ponta Delgada 18:40) and line 208 at 17:45 (Ponta Delgada 19:03). It may be the same bus going on; ask the driver. The buses go to the village by the lakes, not up to the Vista do Rei viewpoint.
